Root Nandroids and such???

When one is preparing to do something that would require them to create a backup or nand, what are the files that MUST BE SAVED? I'm confused b/c in my feeble attempt at partitioning a new sdcard, I read where I am to make a backup of my CURRENT sdcard (I'm replacing the stock 8GB with a 16GB C10) on to my computer for later reloading onto the newly partitioned card. What I did was connect my phone to PC via USB cable, open the Computer and went down to the Removable Drive ?:. I copied the entire contents then placed it into a folder on my Desktop. Is this the proper/necesssary method or IS THERE AN EASIER WAY?!!!

Thats the way to backup the SD card.

But that is NOT a nandroid. Nandroids are done from recovery and backup the internal system of the phone itself.

Check out the information and instructions for doing it in the life after root section here:

I cannot tell you how many times I have read that, but STILL I'm not clear on this!!! Sorry.

I know that the nands are done through recovery but even then, I can't seem to figure out how to actually RESTORE from one! Sorry (again).

Some of us are just THICKER HEADED than most so please bear with us (me)! :D

No problem!

You restore one by going back into your recovery and selecting backup/restore again like you did to make one. Then simply click on restore and select the nandroid you made.

Nandroids are great. They are like a time machine for your phone. :D

But in my case where I'm trying to change out my sdcard to a larger/partitioned one and having to format it, etc. the nands would not be on it until I transfer the contents from the former sdcard back off my PC onto the new card. Is this correct?

Correct, they are stored in the folder named nandroid on whatever SD card was in the phone when it was made

The Nandroid folder is only for Amon RA and Amon Ra Style recoveries Clock Work Mod uses its own Parent Folder.

Which recovery do you have? and With the New SDCARD go ahead a allow the phone to format it. I have seen to many come in with issues because the phone didn't format the card. Once they let the phone format the card the issue's have stopped.

My file called "nandroid" has my most recent nand in it but when I try to restore it from my Amon Ra recovery, it states "Oops...something went wrong! Please check the recovery log!" Where is the recovery log?

Anyone?

I'm kinda dead in the water here now. First time EVER trying to restore from the much-acclaimed "Nandroid backups" and what happens?! PHHHITT...

Time to just DL a whole new ROM since I've been with the CM7 for many moons.

After you try to restore the nandroid, go to the main menu and select other>move recovery log to SD

The log gets cleared after each boot so you will need to retry the nandroid or the log will be blank

A common issue unfortunately. ok the log is stored in the nand partiton and unfortunately every time you reboot the log is wiped clean. You need to move it to your SDCARD. In Amon RA choose Other and then move recovery log to sd

When working Nandroids are great. They are a snapshot of the system as is. Pretty much like clonezilla or norton ghost. Problem is when they are unreadable/ unusable then they are pretty much like a big block of concrete. They weigh a lot but are pretty useless. My personal advice is to always have Titanium Backup up to date and have a very reliable ROM and KERNEL on the SDCARD. I find that this combination can be every bit as effective as the Nandroid. While I'll agree that Nandroids are a n00bs best friend for an experienced user they are not as grand as they once were. I still make them but for the most part I rarely use them.

I still lean very heavily upon them. It is good for me to know, if I pull some sort of bonehead stunt, and make some sort of mod or tweak, and I screw it all up, I can get back to a working setup with minimal hassle.

i like having a good working rom on the card and have my tb backed up to date as well, but I still like my nand!

did you rename the folder or nandroid backup? if so what did you name it to? did you move the entire nandroid folder?

I did rename it right as it was created by only adding 'JUN7' to the beginning of the file. I did not move anything initially but as time has gone by and my desperation level increased, I'm not sure if I moved the file more than once but I remember trying to move it to the root directory.

No, I did not move the entire folder. :)

if you are using amon ra then there should be a folder called nandroid. inside that folder is another one called something like HT0CVHL01139 (it might vary from phone to phone). and after that is what looks to be a folder when in actuality it is your nandroid backup. which one did you move and rename? the actual nandroid? or one of those folders?

I went over to a friend's house who happens to be a rooted-phone-user and he helped get it back! I am restored to where I was BEFORE attempting this crazy idea of doubling my external memory!!! Yes, the original sdcard is back nestled under the battery and the NEW ONE is still in its cute little plastic .....coffin!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not about to let this little chip whip me! I will attempt to get it onboard and operational asap. But for now, it's time to get ready for a big family weekend!

Thanks to each one who replied to my desperate call for intervention! We shall meet up again I'm fairly certain :) Have a great weekend as well..

IIRC - I put the prefix "JUN7" in front of one of the folders inside the nandroid folder...

I don't know why it won't work on your new card, but, you have it on the old card too, right?

How about just go into recovery and try to restore it on the old card to see if it works there?

Just an idea. don't know why it wouldn't work on new card.

Well, since I'm back with my original card and ROM, and everything is working properly, I am going to look at flashing a new ROM (I think you hve recommended Deck's Reloaded. 44...may try it) to give methat 'new telephone ' feeling' again! Are there any ICS ROM's out there yet for our phones? Stable release?

At any rate, I want to do it right all the way through with the nandroids and using my new partitioned card. For sure, I'll need help along the way!

Yes it's baked in. Just go to wireless and network settings. No app needed as far as I know (I never really use it, baked in has always worked on deck when I needed it).

Also, you CAN rename nandroid backup folders....I usually put an underscore and then a brief description (NO SPACES), so it looks something like this

XXXXXXXX_deckreloadedmason

That way I have somewhat of an idea of what I'm restoring.
