Root Network connection issues

Ok, Fridays Q & A....

Made a liveCD. Rebooted pc and doing all that jazz. Now to download and extract files. Can I do that while running the liveCD? Do I need to dl those files PRIOR to running liveCD? And, am I dl'ing Linux or Windows version?

Thanks in advance, again. :D

I'm keeping a close eye on this thread. I'm very close to jumping ship to a GS3, but am hoping Mike has some success here! I love the hardware of the LTEvo way more than the GS3, so I'd love to keep this instead.

Once you're booted to Ubuntu, look up in the top right hand corner of the screen and find the icon that looks like the WiFi symbol on your phone, click on that. This will show all your internet connections, click on one to set it up.

Then open the FireFox icon on the main homescreen, navigate to the forums and download all the filesshown in the guide and on Unlimited IO's website.

Make sure you save em to the default "Downloads" location, it'll make it easier in the long run. :)

The new s-off methods only work in Linux.

In the other thread, we have a pointer to the Ubuntu Linux download and they say how to run from cd. You can also do it from a USB stick.

You use either to boot into Linux instead of Windows.

See if you can get comfortable with that part first, no shame if you can't. You'll want to play with that and get group advice here first.

Then, it's a matter of downloading and following poor instructions. Sorry, that's on them, but there are folks to help.
DirtyRacun has a Windows version (supported on 32-bit). I've run it several times .

Vista 32bit?
I think only 7 32-bit is fully supported by Team Unlimited, but many have had success on XP (even some with 64-bit). If you have the proper drivers installed, there's no reason it shouldn't work. But you won't be able to get support from the official team on their channel if you have issues.

Ubuntu is still the safest way to do it - no drivers necessary.

wow, where did I read that they weren't going to have a windows version because there were some sorts of issues with how it handled usb????

Edit: well, I'll be! there it is, right in our guide and their guide too! Old timers disease has struck again! :)

I just wanted to pop in with an update since I'm having the same issues as the OP.

At Rxpert83's advice, I went into the Sprint store to have them check out my antennas. I un-rooted, and flashed the latest RUU before turning it in. The tech there said that my antennas tested just fine.

He started talking about the Network Vision, and the upgrades and how that can cause issues right now with the network. I told him about my experience, that I can't lock into 4G, while my girlfriend's Note 2 locks into 4G all day long without breaking a sweat.

He admitted that the LTEvo has a weaker antenna than either of the Samsung phones. The Note 2 in particular has a huge antenna (a "powerhouse" as he called it). The tech's main phone is an S3, and he says it fares better than the LTEvo, but he still has issues locking sometimes and it's not as good as the Note 2's. He did say that the LTEvo's antennas are better than the LG phones (and the iPhone's as well, which I'm read conflicting reports for).

So his advice? Wait a few months until it deploys in our area officially, and then re-consider an exchange. He said if I exchange it, I'll likely get a refurbished model which may exhibit the same issues (if not more, or less). At least with my phone, I know what I've got.

Not sure if this helps anyone, but thought I'd at least share my experiences. My radios seem to be within spec, and the tech confirmed they're not as good as the Samsung ones (while conceding that his S3 isn't that much better than the LTEvo's antennas).

Thanks for the info!

My area doesn't have 4g and might not ever. I just wish the 3g speeds were something to write home about. :(

Ok, I think I'm gonna do this thing right now.....

do i need to extract ubuntu before putting it on a thumb drive?

Ha! never run out of f bombs...

Let me look at the procedure and see if I can figure out what is supposed to be happening. I didn't root this way, in the mean time, post what your actual difficulty is and see if one of the other guys can set you straight quickly.

That was the ticket. Now that my pc is booted to ubuntu, I dl'd the first group of files. I selected to dl and extract to the home/default folder. I also dl'd a terminal app as I was unable to locate a stock terminal. Im pretty much lost and out of f-bombs at this point.

On your main home screen, there is an Ubuntu symbol in the upper left hand corner. Click on that, and it will show the terminal in there. :)

No worries on the frustrations, trust me I was in your shoes 6 months ago. LOL :p

Once you have the terminal session opened up, follow the instructions. If you get stuck, post back. I'll keep checking in to be sure you're ok. :)

so you are doing dirty racun method?

did you back up your sd card as suggested?

did you see this on the site? join irc for help? Unlimited.IO

Meantime, I am trying to see what the method actually is, I can't get it to open on my pc at the moment.

edit: ah, the voice of experience. sounds good, huh?

Here's where I'm at.....

liveCD up and running.
Terminal downloaded and installed.
I can open Terminal and type commands.

I dl the first file listed to be dl'd.

Where do I extract and save it?

You extract anywhere you want to, just make sure you note what folder it is in.

For me, I made a new folder called "racun" and dumped all the necessary files in there.

You'll have to navigate to this folder in the terminal. In order to find the exact directory path, right click on the folder and look at the properties. It will be something like home/Ubuntu/racun*

*or whatever folder you extract to

EDIT: you navigate to that folder in terminal by typing cd home/uBuntu/*

where * is your folder name. Be sure to double-check the path of the folder though (by the right-clicking on it and viewing properties). Once you've navigated to that folder in your terminal, you should be able to carry out the instructions in the guide.

Team Unlimited advised keeping all the files in the default directory, hence, I advise the same thing. I'd keep em in the default "Download" folder. Extract the files in the same folder.

But as stated above it'll work if you do it in another folder. :)

If you're having issues following the instructions on the Unlimited.IO page, I'll suggest contacting the team in their IIRC channel. At the top of the Unlimited.IO page click on support and sign in.

We normally post up guides for these, but they explicitly asked that we don't. So we have complied with their wishes. My apologies. :o

This was probably what was causing me all the f-bombs. I obviously wasn't commanding it to the right folder or whatever. At what point does phone get plugged into pc?
