New Firmware

thanks Andronix. I guess I got confused because this thread stated off about the new firmware and then got into a swap discussion. i already have Galaxhero 1.1 running but haven't done anything with swap. i am curious to see what kind of performance increase i can get. thanks.

Andronix, thanks for the tip.
I can't understand why swap isn't enabled on stock ROMs. I will never use my phone without it again.

@benner
I am not sure but maybe it could be run without galaxo.
swapon (and swapoff) is part of busybox, so I guess it is possible to enable swap when you install busybox on your device (of course, you would have to have superuser privileges for that)

EDIT: so I guess this isn't true if kernel doesn't support swapping

unfortunately, samsung dev guy chose to tick off swap support before building stock rom, so no, you need custom kernel.

Using swap is going to cause quite a lot of write operations. My understanding is tha, since SD as a medium is only good for a certain number of write operations, using it for swapping will cause it to malfunction it faster than if not (ditto for solid state hard drives). Now, please note that I'm saying faster, it's not going to kill your phone in half a year -- but perhaps in three years instead of five, or something along those lines.

II5 isn't working all that well for me, so I upgraded.

The phone does seem a fraction snappier.

I've created a separate thread for discussing the new keyboard. Please join in!

I've yet to determine if this firmware affects my many problems with the compass, sensors, apn list, and so on.

Hey, my Galaxy does in fact seem to have improved with the K4 firmware! It's now been 'up' for over 100h and the sensors are still working, I haven't had 3G drop out (=forgotten APN list) yet, and the compass seems 'better'.

Yes, you have a point there.

But still, NAND flash is guaranteed to withstand at least 100k erase-write-cycles (it's likely it will in fact endure more) before deteriorating and with the implementation of adequate wear leveling algorithms and appropriate size of flash partition, it should not pose a serious problem. And even if swap part of flash starts to deteriorate it doesn't mean it will kill your phone. Just replace your flash and you're back in business.

Guys, as for the swap file and NAND life.. Why not buy an ultra fast, but small SD card (those two factors should keep the price reasonable) and dedicate it exclusively to swap. When it fails, you will simply buy a new one.

I don't know what I'm talking about here, but I thought that the internal flash media was going to be used for the swap. If you can use a removable card for it, then by all means go right ahead!

Yes, you can. So I see no reason for using internal SD for that purpose. It would indeed increase wear and the chance of failing of the memory that you cannot replace.

Unless someone finds built-in memory is not enough, and would want to plug in a 16 Gig microSD, that SD slot is best used for swap.

Its a full kernel, but you have loadable modules which will be missing from the system partition of the stock II5

guys,

im sorry for being a total noob here but how do i get the new firmware for my phone?

ive tried trawling through the various threads but i get lost in all the techno-babble!

sorry

I've not yet noticed this update available through NPS (unlocked German phone). Any thoughts on what Samsung is up to? (hahahahaha)

ahh! it deleted all my settings and apps? is there a way to keep these intact every time you flash?
What I've found is that your data on the SD cards remains intact, but all your apps and settings get zapped. I find this extremely annoying, and really expected Android to deal with app settings much better than it does (need I say 'as PalmOS did? ;)).

When I remember it, I precede a firmware update by using aTrackDog to update all my apps, then ASTRO to back them all up to SD. Then, after updating (and resetting), I can batch-install all my apps, but the settings are all gone. :(

Anyone know if the IK4 firmware has fixed the issue with having to remove and replace the battery to get the phone to switch on periodically?
I assume other people have the same issue with the i7500.

Thanks for any info. :)

i cant say ive ever experienced that issue but i rarely turn my phone off

I never switch mine off either, but once every few days I'll go to use it and it won't wake up. I dunno if it's on, but the screen lock is stuck, or if it's powered down, but the only way to get it back on and running is to remove and replace the battery. The normal power on/off button does nothing in this situation.

I'm on original O2 II4 at the moment.

What's really annoying is if I'm expecting a call, I keep having to check that the phone is still alive.

Maybe it's not a common issue with the phone, but mine does it. :(

O2 tell me they've had no one except me report this issue to them
