Root New Here Whats Next?

i am now rooted but dont know where to go from there. what rom to go to im not looking for anything crazy. i would like to use the wifi hot spot any ideas?

The first thing I would do after root is like what Frenchy pointed you to but the application I would learn how to use is Titanium Backup. It is probably the single most important application a rooted user must have. The TB Pro key is a must;)

The other thing I would do is, if you haven't already, is switch your recovery. I highly, highly recommend using Amon Ra Style 3.11 recovery. It's the best, imo, available recovery for the Evo 4G. By using this recovery, you can restore amon ra recovery nandroids, clockworkmod recovery nandroids and obviously amon ra style recovery nandroids. You can also do compressed backup to save space on your sdcard. And as an added bonus, you can use capacitive keys, volume rocker and/or use the touch screen.

After reading up on the wonderful guide, ask away if you have any questions. There are some very knowledgeable individuals in this section and all are willing to answer any question you may have. More than likely, this All Things root section for the Evo will have someone logged in willing to help.

Good luck and happy flashing:D

i am using the Amon Ra Style 3.11 recovery at least thats what i used in the rooting process. any roms that you guys would suggest for a new user?

Can't go wrong w/ any of Mik's ROM's. I would recommend MikG. It's fast, stable, and has everything working out the box.

There are so many stable roms out there right now, it's all dependant on what you want. Sense 1.0(Recommend swagstr's SOS) Sense 2.1 (MikG 3.11) Sense 3.0 (Mik3D RC1) Sense 3.5 (MikRunny) Yea, I know, aamikam fan here:p

If you are looking for an AOSP rom (Android Open Source Project) Try CM7.2 orDeck's 1.3d

If you want alpha/beta style ICS rom then any of the ICS roms are good. Preludedrew's ICS, Deck's ICS or AOKP and if you like the iPhone look, MIUI ICS rom is developing nicely.

If I had to pick one, MikG;)

IMHO, the starting point for any rooter user is flashing MikG 3.11. It's good enough where you might not even want to change to anything else for quite awhile.

After you tire of MikG, I would try Deck's ICS ROM or the AOKP ICS ROM. Both are great. The choice is really yours, and your options are pretty much limitless, which is amazing considering the device is almost 2 years old.

im only having one problem now, with titanium back up when i went to restore all my files, after the reboot it kept erroring out on me. and woudn't load to the home screen. just kept reloading the error over and over again

you have to be careful with what you restore with titanium backup. some of the apps that you might have backed up might have been system apps. you will be able to tell because they are in red.

Yes .... what did you backup and restore? I usually just back up and restore applications and data. Never had any issues.

here is a decent guide on Titanium Backup and how to start using it. Do Understand that Titanium is more of a Phone Manager than a Backup Oh it backs up but so much more. It can Freeze Apps. It can give you information about your app storage, Reboot The Device, etc.. Its a powerful app and its every bit worth the money for the Pro Edition.

Also Very Very Very Important Make sure when you are Flashing a new ROM that you Wipe really well. Caulkins Format All or VR SUPERWIPE work very well. Normally I will manually Wipe everything EXCEPT SDCARD then run the Caulkin Script and I have no issues Going between ROMs.

Will Find links to the two scripts and post them as soon as I can The one I found was to megaupload so that won't do you know good.

Welcome to the World of Root. Remember with the Freedom of Rooting Comes the Responsibility.

One Last Thing : THERE ARE NO DUMB QUESTIONS.
sorry to yell for the last one there but really please ask before you do something that your not sure of. It will save you a bunch of headache. IF you run into an issue that seems impossible for YOU bring it here thats why we exist. Please Do Not UNROOT your Phone then come in here needing us to still help you get up and running. (Trust Me its happend) if you do we will still help its just going to be a lot more difficult. :)

That's what TB is for. It'll backup all your apps and app data, so you can restore them after flashing new ROM's. It's a HUGE time saver.

yes you can switch between roms just make sure you backup everything before you do and do a Nandroid before flashing. If you don't like the ics you can easily go back to the state your in now by restoring the Nand.

Also Understand you will have to set everything up again and make sure you WIPE.

Typically restoring apps and app data is fine and can be done w/o issue (most of the time), but what Ocn is talking about is restoring system data after flashing a new ROM. If you restore system data after you've flashed a different ROM, you'll likely run into incompatibility issues, bugs, force closes, etc. It's always a good idea to keep system data separate between builds, updates, and flashes, unless told otherwise.

yep, i got ahead of myself lol, i was trying to do a full back up from the stuff before i was rooted. oh well live and learn lol now i am fully operational on mikg 3.11 and loving it. it is like a whole new phone thats for sure. the things i can control now are amazing

Just curious about your recommendation, don't people have issues with the Amon "style" recovery vs. the original Amon ra recovery?
I mean, if that works for you, great, but is the original more reliable?:)

The 3.08 version of Amon-RA Style recovery is what I've been running, it's all good. It was the TWRP recovery that some folks were having issues with, IE = BRICKS!!

One evo I run the OG Amon-RA 2.3 the other, the "Style" version. Both are good in their own right.
