Nexus 5 Pre-Release/Speculation Thread

Oh the epic GNex thread, of which many ballads have been sung. I am a bit disappointed this thread isn't nearly as insane.

As a GNexer I think I'll be going this route over the other options right now. I barely hit over a gig of data now and would fit in well with the AT&T prepaid plan. I'm on wi-fi all the time and I get zero data in my house with Verizon anyway.

I just feel like giving up stock Android and easy rooting is too much, even with an unlimited plan now. A GPE is really out of my price range.

While my crack flashing has decreased greatly on the GNex, I still want to have that option open to me. We all know that Android developers come up with stuff that we never even knew we needed.

That said, I hope the 28th is the day. As much as I still love my GNex, I'd really like to comfortably through a day on a charge and all the other perks of a new phone.

That thread was the stuff legends are made of, lot of highs and lows over a long period of time.

I'm currently on vzw with unlimited, but in the same boat as you. I never come close to the 2 gb line, and it looks like the unlimited plans are going away anyway
Verizon glitch let unlimited data customers upgrade phones | Mobile - CNET News

At the moment I'm thinking on gettting the unlocked 5 and switching the family to tmob, looks like we could save some considerable cash that way, they seem to have good enough coverage for our usage patterns, and good plans to boot.

All these rumors are just grasping for straws. Its all fun in the beginning but then just becomes ridiculous. I'll just sit back and wait "patiently" until Google themselves say something.

I am going to be ditching Verizon for this phone. I was going to upgrade to the G2 with VZW but decided against locking myself into another two year contract with them. Now I have to decide between T-Mobile and AT&T, both seem to be pretty decent in my area of NJ but Verizon is known to have superior coverage. It's a shame the same cannot be said about their phone selection.

It's entertainment for the ones who have patience lol..

I on the other hand have 0!

For those of you saying you're leaving Verizon for this phone (I will likely be one of you), please tell them why you're leaving!

I'd encourage you to mention the lack of Nexus, but more importantly their insisting on locking the bootloaders of their devices and putting massive amounts of bloatware on their devices.

I don't think we represent even a fraction of their customer base, but it doesn't hurt to tell them why you're leaving, be it via email/twitter/facebook/letter/etc.

I agree totally with this. People who want a Nexus device or even one with bootloaders need to be so vocal about their choice of carriers.

Also, I think we should call them out on the hypocrisy of the GPE editions of phones. Why should it cost double for the same phone but with an unlockable bootloader? They're ok with those phones being on their network as long as we're willing to pay such a premium for it. It's not like the GNex wrecked their precious network two years after its release.

Agree 1000%. Verizon's hypocrisy knows no bounds. "We don't want unlocked bootloaders on our network because it's a security risk and affects the customer experience". BS. You allow dev edition devices, which by definition have an unlockable bootloader. So spare me the BS about not wanting "unsecure" devices on your network. You just want money and you think loading your phones with bloatware that cannot be removed and removing customers' choices in OS by locking the devices down will make you more money.

Again it would probably not be a huge % of their business, but can you imagine if Verizon did a 180 on this policy and started telling the OEMs NOT to lock bootloaders? It may be too late after their draconian policies for so many years, but can you imagine having the best network AND great devices without locked bootloaders? They'd make a killing I would think on the people who want to tinker with their phones. Alas, we are the vocal minority and they know they make more money on iPhone users and Droids. :(

Ok, don't mean to derail the thread with OT VZW rants...I'm done.

I'm right there too. Switching from an unlimited plan on VZW to AT&T.

While perusing twitter for nexus 5 info I found a guy that posted how he was switching from vzw because of it and a vzw support guy actually replied and asked why he would do such a thing. I'll tried to dig it up, its pretty funny.

Android 4.4 KitKat website will have a countdown timer

Just in case you're not swayed by some far-reaching rumor grabs when it comes to when we should expect the announcement for Android 4.4 KitKat and the new Nexus 5, it looks like Google will have an official countdown timer going at some point in order to let you know exactly when things are happening. Earlier today, we heard a rumor which pointed to October 28th (if you followed some tenuous teaser links), but really that isn't anything but an unverified rumor.

However, in the realm of fact, it turns out that the Android 4.4 KitKat website has code in it for a countdown timer. The KitKat website references a JavaScript file named kitkat.min.js. And, in that JavaScript file is the code for a countdown timer. Some have claimed that the code points to October 28th, but that is not true. The timer isn't pointing to any date just yet, but it would be easy enough for Google to add a date to the code and get the timer started.

We're still confident that the announcement for the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 will happen before the end of the month though. It does look like Best Buy is even getting set up for a new Google handset. Now, it's just a matter of patience.

Yeah, retentions department had a "pleasant" chat with me when I left them. I told them exactly why I was leaving and the list seemed like a mile long, lol. After ranting, all that he said was "but your coverage was good?" :banghead:

Nexus nexus nexus day lol come on Google! Has anybody downloaded the nexus 5 app for news in the play store yet? Is it accurate info? I love my gnex and after having this phone I don't see myself with anything other then a sexy nexy!

Someday they'll learn that's not all that matters

[Hide]Maybe [/spoiler]

What really needs to happen is that a carrier with comparable coverage needs to actually compete with them instead of playing leap frog with regards to who can get away with weaseling as much money out of their consumers with draconian polices/practices.

Is anyone considering going with a Moto X on Republic Wireless over this? The monthly pricing alone almost makes it worth putting up with any Sprint network shortcomings.

I have had a lot of issues with Sprint, but the fact RW has a decent phone and its price structure is crazy, makes it very tempting. And Sprint's network is supposedly getting better too (although I will be likely the very last market upgraded).

There are only two things holding me back. One is my past experiences with Sprint (much of it is the data speed) and two is going RW will lock me into a CDMA carrier with a phone that will only work on that one CDMA carrier. That alone makes me want to go Nexus 5.

I will likely go Nexus 5. Is anyone else trying to decide between these two phones?

I only pay 30 dollars per month (plus sales tax) on T-Mobile and am quite happy. I wouldn't go back to a CDMA carrier unless it was free, lol.

I'd be all over the $30 plan if it weren't for the fact I only have edge in my area. Considering I'd need more than 100 minutes of talk a month, I'd need to use Google Voice. I'm guessing edge is not going to cut it for VOIP. I could do the basic Tmobile family plan with 500mb of high speed data (don't need the higher allotment since I only have edge anyway) and I'd get unlimited voice and text and data. I can't imagine edge being any more painful than Sprint's data in my area. During peak times like the evening, I would have trouble getting more than 56k speeds on Sprint.

i've never gotten better than 120kbps on EDGE. You really want to be on WiFi or LTE to do VOIP, but HSPA will cut it in a pinch. Though you might have delay on the calls due to high latency.

If you look at most of the "big" phone releases the threads get a lot fewer hits then they used to a couple years ago. Not sure whats up but I think people are frequenting other forums more. I know XDA's N5 section has a few threads of pretty epic proportions.

My problem with Republic is that, up to now, they don't have LTE. It looks like they may be getting LTE with the Moto X, but it looks like the plan cost for 4G is $40 a month. I'm not going to pay $300 for a phone that can only be used on a single carrier, especially when they want $40 a month for 4G.

The single carrier thing I get. But $40 a month for 4G? Unlimited? I don't get how that's a negative. True, Sprint 4G may not be the best. It is still decently fast. I don't know any other carrier offering 4G Unlimited for that kind of dough. Like I said, I am leaning toward the Nexus 5, but it's the price that is leaving the door open slightly for me to go to RW.

I forgot the other downfall with RW, which they are supposedly fixing soon, is not being able to send MMS. While this seems like a small thing, it is huge when you want to quickly send a photo of the kids to friends/relatives who may not have a smartphone but do have MMS capability. I also have a lot more phone numbers in my contact list than I do emails. It's much more convenient having the ability to MMS.
