Root NOOB with a LOT of root questions

I skimmed over the other Topics that seem to be closely related to what I'm trying to ask, and I'm still confused as heck and have a LOT of simple questions about little things like..

-ROMs
-Watermarked/non-watermarked
-Flashing ROMs or flashing for that matter
-OTAs
-Unlocking Bootloader

I have a few more questions also if someone could kindly PM me to help me out.. I have an Ipod Touch and I've jailbroken it so I'm not a complete NOOB when it comes to technical stuff..

Also, I have an Evo 4g 2.18 hboot 2.3.5 android version?

-ROMs ROMS are loosely like an operating system on your computer. Windows/mac/linux.... and there are different flavors within them (windows 7, XP, ect). There are Android Open Source Project ROMS (AOSP) or sense based ones that look more like the one you currently have
-Watermarked/non-watermarked This is only applicable if you have accepted the newest OTA (which I hope you havent). Pull your battery, put it back in, hold power and volume down till your h-boot screen pops up, post the results
-Flashing ROMs or flashing for that matter instructions for flashing ROMS can be found in the rooting for gingerbread dummies guide
-OTAs Never accept one
-Unlocking Bootloader once again, only applicable if you accepted teh newest OTA

Just read that your H-boot is 2.18 lol, took things 1 step at a time.

Basically you will need to read

Go to the link by karandpr at the top. It is full of all the old stickies that everyone will link you to. In that link, there should be a couple of ones to check out. One will be full of definitions (matlocks rooting for dummies has this I believe).
I'll try to help out real quick though:

ROM - this is kinda like a set up for your phone. The phone runs android, but it can be configured in a few ways. Sense Roms and AOSP roms are the two main branches.
OTA = Over the Air, If you root, don't do this ever.
Unlocked bootloader - the bootloader is what you get when you turn your phone on holding down the Vol Down button and power. It's locked by default.

Now, I have never heard of this watermark term, so I'm guessing it's something relatively new. Or it could mean images? Like that watermark that says "I can haz cheezburger" or whatever... :D

The watermark is placed there by HTC when you unlock your bootloader with the newest OTA so that if you bring the phone in for service they know it was rooted, even if you have S-ON.

There are ways of removing the watermark though

well get used to the term. a lot of devices will now come out with locked bootloaders and you will get your hboot watermarked, especially from htc. but other mobile companies are following suit. and some companies like htc will have a tool where you can unlock the bootloader but it will be watermarked and thus void your warranty.

So I guess Watermarked/non-Watermarked is a way for Customer Service to tell if you've rooted your device?

it has a ton of info that should answer most of you questions. but if you still have then please keep it coming. and remember there is no such thing as a stupid question. the only one is the ones that go unasked.
 
Is there not a simple program that does all this? This seems kind of complicated.. I have to enter commands, download this, this and this. When I jailbroke my iPod Touch, I used greenpois0n, and it was a simple program that installed the jailbreak after I did a couple steps.. I haven't found a quick and easy way to root my Evo, and I'm starting to lose interest..

Well after getting my repaird evo back with the 2.18 update ( I told them not to update) I re rooted with the tacoroot method works like a charm. seems complicated but not too bad. I sugest u copy and print the instructions so u have them while doing the process. Just follow the instructions step by step and ask any questions u have.
 
Just remember with each ota HTC and other makers will close any known exploit making it hard and harder to root whichis a good thing. But bad for people who want to root their phones. St least HTC had provided a way to do it. Yes it is more complicated but it still can be done. Main thing is to read and ask questions before doing it.
 
The people here are great I read the forums for a few nights, ask ocnbrze one question and walk me throught all the step, he knows his evo stuff, ask in the forum they will help, took me one night to do it all. Thanks for the evo forums a lot stuff in here.

We had very simple 1 step processes but HTC just patched them and there really isn't Tue need to find a new exploit for a 2 year old device
 
I'm entering the command prompts, for the identifier token? It's telling me <waiting for device>...


When I select Fastbook (earlier in the steps) do I do anything else, or leave it on the Bootloader screen ??

I think there is something that you really need to understand:
Jail Breaking your iPod or any iCrap is not the Same as Rooting your phone. Jailbreaking is tampering with Intellectual Property who's license forbids such activity. The term Jailbreaking is used in the aspect that doing so you could cause on to face civil and even possible criminal consequences for the act.

Rooting is not violating any License Agreement. Google owns the Android System and has it as Open Source. HTC has locked the bootloader not as a License restriction but in order to maintain integrity of the ROM they have placed on it. Its also done to validate warranty work.

I have seen several people have a general misconception to what the difference is so I hope this clears it up.

I know the difference between the two. I just want someone to walk me through it. The point I'm making is that the jailbreak was easy and this isnt. That's all.

So as I now understand this, jailbreaking an IPhone is "illegal"? Seriously I did not know that...I was going to try to jailbreak my wife's Iphone sometime but how often do people get in trouble with whoever from Apple?:eek:

have you use this guide?

and leave the fastboot screen on as you will need to enter the unlock key command when you get the email.

That's the method I've been trying to use, I download all the files HTCdev gives me.. I put those 3 files into the "android" folder.. and I still get stuck at the
<waiting for device> screen. I've checked USB debugging, Firewall is down, Fastboot is selected.. I don't know what Im doing wrong.

your phone needs to be in fastboot.

power off then press and hold power+vol down to get into the bootloader then select fastboot. it should chnge to fastboot usb. now enter the commands from the android folder.
