I have an unbranded desire on the 3 network, and have the Froyo system update available to download. Can anyone provide advice or a checklist on what is sensible to do prior to starting the update process?

Simon.

You need at least 25MB of storage on your phone (phone, not SD Card) otherwise it won't install. Otherwise, go for it :)

Bully, yep - I'm in exactly the same boat.

WS

EDIT: And I have NO Vodafone branding whatsoever.

Hi WS

So if you press the menu button when on the home screen and select Scenes there is no Vodafone optoion ?

And you are showng the same version numbers as me ?

still dont have any updates.. running 1.21-update1 on software version 1.19.707.7.. anyone from the philippines that has updated their phone to froyo?..

Also in the Philippines, phone from Hong Kong with software version 1.19.832.2 and still no updates... also waiting...

Mine IS VF so I will have to wait for them to release it, but hopefully that will be sooner than the competition!

For those that have 2.2.:

What is the HD video capture like? Are Youtube videos in synch with sound and picture? Has anyone tried a Divx video file yet?

Thanks :)

Got my update but I think it has completely fubarred my phone battery wise. I charged the phone fully last night, installed the update and went to bed. Woke up in the morning to a dead battery. Completely flat. Charging it now to see if it happens again... lets hope the update hasn't ruined it!

I had this problem because I updated without my goldcard in. Thought I'd bricked the b@stard!!!! I was thinking about what excuse I was going to use to make a claim on my insurance!!!! Anyway, this is how I got it sorted.
If it has any relevance, my phone is unbranded, T-Mobile sim-locked.

1. download this : http://liveimage.htc.com/OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8-1.21.405.2_release4dua3bcrut4wrv30.zip
2. When the download has finished, rename it to update.zip (be sure not to end up renaming it update.zip.zip !!!)
3. Copy the file to the root of your goldcard.
4. I removed the sim card, although I don't know if you have to do this.
5. Turn off your phone & turn back on with the down volume key pressed.
6. Navigate to "RECOVERY" using the volume key. Tap the power button to select.
7. Your phone will enter recovery (your phone will show a red triangle on a black screen) press and hold 'Volume Up' then tap 'Power.
8. Your device should now be at the 'recovery' screen. Select the 'wipe data/factory reset' option ***** You will loose ALL your data, but hey, at least you should get your phone back *****.
9. Select "Apply sdcard:update.zip" Your phone should then go though the update.
10. I can't remember if it will automatically reboot. If not select "Reboot" in the recovery menu.

I hope this helps some of you out.
Thanks go to several sources including Modaco & this site without which I wouldn't have been able to scrabble some sort of recovery.

Does the phone have to be rooted for that method to work? I've updated a non-rooted virgin mobile branded desire to wwe 1.21 using a goldcard but it doesn't offer me froyo.

Any help would be much appreciated!

whats the filename for froyo to make sure thats what Im actually downloading?

The initial update screen will refer to software number 2.09.405.8.

I installed 2.2 yesterday evening on an unbranded unrooted Desire on 3 and now I dont get any 3G. Any idea on how to add the settings again as I cant see anything obvious in the menus.

Edit: The 3 mobile APN was not ticked under network settings. Normal service resumed now

I had three APNs before the update and only one after. I used to have one for 3's mobile network, one for their MMS and then one the 3 store put it when they were trying to fix something. When I looked at my APNs after the update, I noticed the one that was left was not selected and when I view its settings it looks like a hybrid of the old mobile network and MMS ones.

I've an unbranded phone (from play.com) and have been waiting all weekend for the update to be available - repeatedly checking every few hours, but nothing has turned up.

I was beginning to get annoyed, but I've just turned off the phone and switched it back on, and checked for updates - et voila! - update available :)

Is there any stand alone applciation for viewing flash files in froyo?? i can see a flash player in the application list but not in the main menu...

Also only a very very few applications can be moved to sd card using the option in phone??Is it a limitation of the apps or the limitation with the phone??

can some one throw any light into this???

I think if you were to open a flash file off sd then it would ask you what you want to open it in and you should be able to choose flash player.

you have to wait for the developer to add move to SD support... I have a grand total of 4 apps at the moment than I have moved.

google sky map, jewels, rockplayer & wifi analyser

Can people who have updated to Froyo that have BRANDED ORANGE Desire's confirm how they did it without an unlock code or is this a neccessity?

Do you leave gold card in?
Does everything work ok?

Ah crap ive got problems. Phone has a clockwise turning progress icon. It gets so far then says "process system is not responding" and gives me a choice of Force Close or Wait. Both these option just reboot the phone and it starts with the clockwise progress icon again, then the message comes up again. Not getting anywhere :(

Same problem for me - think it's due to doing the HTC update on an unbranded, but previously branded handset. Think you need a Gold Card in when you do the update, but my Gold Card says it needs formatting or something, so won't download the update to it.

mine has updated but it wont install new apps??? its debranded orange phone, everything else works but any new install from the market causes a restart and the app that i had downloaded doesnt show. any help please as its driving me mad.

Having a problem here. I have a 1GB SD card. I have no trouble in making the Gold Card out of it, but then Windows tells me that the Gold Card needs formatting. In other words, I can't copy the update.zip file to it.

What am I doing wrong? Also, if I make the Gold Card, put that in the handset and try and copy the update.zip file over USB cable, the phone tells me that the Gold Card needs to be formatted.

I had this problem, you need to boot to the boot loader, go to the recovery option, when you get the red symbol on the black screen press volume up and power then select 'wipe data/factory reset'. Reboot your phone and all will be fine.
