Thanks. I'm glad I found this forum.

I really can't wait. I use my phone pretty much only for gaming. there are some serious real gamer gaming opportunities, and i need to move stuff to SD so bad. Totally full within days of getting it.

Lol yeah it sort of is. ill spare my life story, but I am super poor, and was so excited to see how cheap this thing was. Lol

other than sd move, does anyone know the other specs coming along with it?

I'm not holding my breath on an official 2.2 release from Huawei, as people have been saying Q1 of 2011 since late 2010. Your other option, if you need Apps2SD, is to install the Icarus MOD. I've downloaded over 100 apps at this point, still have somewhere between 400-500MB left on the 1GB Apps2SD partition I created on my SD card, and still over 100MB left on internal memory.

If so let me know how that's going. I'm seriously interested in it now that they fixed the few issues that had me concerned. Do you know of anyone who has a video of the newest icarus rom in action?

P.S I know my font keeps changing. Sometimes I write from my phone, Sometimes I'm on a computer. ^^.

Well thats all I really need. Can't modding the phone hurt it in some cases? I can't afford to brick it.

Is there any way to post this thread on Facebook? I am constantly on Cricket's Fb page and I am tired of all these no-nothing stupid people bashing the Ascend and saying there is no update planned ever!! I have had my Ascend for 3 months and absolutely love it. I am a newbie to smartphones, but am grateful that this phone works and has 2.1 at least. Thank you to Cricket and to Huawei for this phone for us newcomers.

There is still no offical word as to when the 2.2 will be coming out. Rumours are flying but nothing is confirmed.

Jazz, or anyone really, would it be prudent to wait for the upgrade before rooting my phone, or does it not matter?

Also, considering I want to root my phone, and I dont know jack about phones, is there a thread that has all I need to know explained? I read your rooting step by step page and it says if I dont know what something is, to stop. i would like to be android literate. Thanks.

Hello Repo. Only you can answer this question. It's kinda like riding a bicycle. You have to be willing to fall down once or twice in the process. The guide is there for you if you want it. Those of us who have modded our phones did so because we were willing to take the risk. There are some things you simply can't learn other than by experience. Hope this kind answers your question. We're here to help you should you need us. :)

Is there a way around paying $6 for titanium backup? I don't wanna pay for nuthin. :D

OOPS!!!! TILT!
Firlst of all let me say that Titanium Backup could never be thought of as 'nothin'. It's one of the best app investments you could ever buy and if you are rooted it is highly recommended! Secondly, here in the Ascend Forum we absolutely condemn the practice of buying or promoting pirated and illegal apps in any way, shape or form. To go a step further, I would suggest that if you are not willing to purchase the pro version of TiBu that it would be best to just not even root. Most probs occur when someone doesn't have the full paid for version.
AndroidForums does not condone copyright infringement nor software piracy.

The dev worked hard to give you a great app.

Use the free version if you don't want to pay an honest price for an honest tool.

I agree, Early, but due to the fact that I have users PM me constantly who have probs trying to restore apps they shouldn't have uninstalled I think it would be best for them to buy the app straight out unless they thoroughly understand UBrocked's Guide to Titanium Backup. And most simply can't understand it for some reason. LOL Six bucks is a small price to pay for such a dramatic improvement in one's phone. :) However, given that we have students, etc., here that may not have the means to purchase pro versions, we are more than willing to help them with the free version and I am sure that is one of the reasons the developer has this version out there. *ramble* *ramble* *grumble*. I am still on my first cup of coffee. LOL :)

Do the root methods here include recovery and the ability to do nandroid backups?

Morning Early!!! :)

We recommend that everyone does a nandroid backup and has some understanding of what rooting means and feels technologically savvy enough to follow the directions, which are really quite simple. The thread was created before we had the CWM Recovery for Cricket and MetroPCS so it isn't in that thread but we do have the separate threads in 'All Things Root' that we refer users to when they need it. It's difficult to put every single thing in one thread without cluttering it up so much it's hard to understand. But you do make a good point. I'll see if I can somehow include the links in there. I will say this...our success ratio for those following the step by step guide is way up there. We haven't had a bricked phone yet. :)

With nandroid backups done before anyone changes or delete apps, there's no way to lose anything and not recover it - and it's free.
I'll put it in the Step by Step Guide to Rooting just as soon as I get back from my doctor's appt which I need to head out for now. Thanks so much for your diligence and helpful suggestions and interest in us Ascend users! We need a guardian angel like you!

HUGS!!! ~ Jazz

1. It's virtually impossible to brick the phone by rooting. As I've seen it stated, it's what you do AFTER rooting that can brick your phone. With the Ascend, rooting is as simple as downloading z4root, running it, and clicking Root, then rebooting. The same applies for unrooting.

2. If Huawei ever releases an official 2.2 upgrade, your phone allegedly will need to be stock before installing it, ie: no uninstalled system apps, unroot. If you use Titanium Backup or other apps to uninstall or freeze apps, you'll need to undo those actions. Some say installing 2.2 without unrooting will remove root and kill your ability to reroot, although I have no personal experience with this. Your other choice is to simply restore your phone to stock using the MetroPCS stock ROM.

3. Icarus 1.1 is basically a bugfix release if I understand it correctly, things like mms.apk and other small issues being corrected.

4. There is at least one free app freezer I've heard of on the market, but the name eludes me at present.

So, I will probably just wait until the 2.2 comes out before rooting, and use this time to study how rooting works and stuff. I want my phone to be phenomenal.

Quick question, once the phone has been upgraded, is there any reason to believe the rooting process already used for Ascend would need change? A new OS wouldn't change anything along those lines hopefully.

Yeah Blast! You're so right! Most users get into trouble after rooting because they don't pay attention to the list of what it safe and not safe to remove. LOL You know the saying...you can lead a horse to water but you can't make that SOB float on his back! hahaha (ohhh? it doesn't go like that?) LOL

You can root your phone now and download CWM Recovery and back your entire ROM onto your computer. Then you will have it for 2.2, when it comes out. But the facts are this: The Ascend will never be 'phenomenal' unless it is modded! 2.2 or no 2.2. ;)

I was able to use the same z4root on my Optimus (Which has 2.2 already, Not 2.2.1 though). I'd suggest to always check these threads to make sure. You never know what Huawei might include in their update. You've always got to do your research. I thought the same way you did too for like..a week. Then I rooted. Now I'm running Icarus 1.1. LOL. Oh and my phone is phenomenal. Its speed is comparable to my Optimus now and all my apps/games/et open up like they are flying ninjas compared with how it was stock!

You guys rock! Thanks! I just went to the all things root page and copied it all down so I can study it first. And I need to save up for the pro versions of the mods. I'm broke. Lol

Good for you Repo!!! Good idea to be prepared before you begin! Were you a Boy Scout perchance? LOL

I know what you mean about being broke. I just had to buy all my apps again after I signed into my google account with the wrong Gmail address and they wouldn't let me change it. GRRRR! Meanies! I could have unflashed ICARUS and then flashed it back but.....I didn't! :D Oh well....

Flashing and unflashing this phone rather than buy apps again. I'm so broke I can't even afford to pay attention. That's why you had to walk me through the Icarus install last night. LOL
