[Official Discussion] Huawei Ascend 2.1 - 2.2 Firmware Upgrade (Info updated as received!)

I aim to join the darkside just as soon as I get an hour or two free at home.

Click on contacts and then click >menu >more >manage contacts >backup to SD Card

VOILA! :)

And yet, Cricket puts a service on our phone, included with our plan, to backup our Contacts to their website. Who are they fooling!?

Yeah...they want our contacts. They bugged the hell out of me with text messages telling me I hadn't backed up my contacts yet until I finally got PEE-OED and called them. Then it stopped. ;)

Jazz, what size partition did you make on the sd card? Also did you have to add the MMS Fix for Metro users or did Icarus 1.1 work out of the box? No cell service here to test MMS. ;0( Thank you and the others on this board, for helping to convert me ahahaahaha. The contributors put alot of work into this mod and made it very easy to install. Thanks to them as well;0)

Today I got a call from my friend who own a Metro Pcs store. He said there is a rumor that Metro will be getting a different phone from Huawei. That they will discontinue support for the Ascend. I told him who he heard that from, He said someone named Hu Nung that is some kind of Kernel developer for Huawei or something. I don't take this as fact but, It's still kind of frustrating to hear.

I'm glad I moved on to Icarus. To think I'd still be waiting for an update if I hadn't, Makes me feel absolutely crazy. I really hope they don't intend to just push the Ascend aside. A really huge amount of people own them. It would be unfair even if it just considered a "Budget" phone.

ok I am stuck... I am using a macbook pro and I can't get passed step 4... The first question I have is
1) are there usb drivers to install for a mac? and if so.. how do i install them?

Also when I run fastboot-mac a white window comes up with various commands and at the bottom it says process completed. I assume this means the program ran correctly but I am not sure because it does not dissappear. Next, when I run the install-recovery file another window opens but nothing seems to have happened. When I try to go into the Clockwork screen all I get is an Android screen with options to reboot, clear cache, and 2 others.

Am I running into problems because I am using a Mac?

I actually wouldn't be at all surprised! Have you seen the IDEOS X5? It was first introduced in Jan 2011 at CES. It's really SWEET! I heard that Cricket was going to get it and so it figures that Metro would too.

Huawei is most definitely making an attempt to move into the high end phones. But they want to keep the price lower. I like that! :)

Actually I LOVE Huawei. Maybe I'll give the Optimus V to my b/f! LOL

:)

Running a mac shouldn't make a difference as long as you can see it when it's connected to your computer (both as a phone and as removeable drive).

Do you Clockwork recover 2.5?
And are you doing everything step by step?

You should post this under the Ascend All things Root> How to Install Icarus

He did and he has it fixed now. But I'm sure he will appreciate the advice. :)

Early, the only reason I can think of that they wouldn't do this is because they want to make us buy their new products or maybe because they know the device hardware really won't support the upgrade that well and would rather not release an unstable version.

Why else wouldn't they give it to us? It couldn't be that dang difficult!

I'm actually baffled by this. ;)
After reading the cricket fan page re: the zio update, you should understand one reason they might not be in a big hurry to go through that again. Lol. btw, how do you like the optimus? I've been thinking of getting one just for the heck of it myself. They are sale at target for $129+$20 gift card so really $109. I was thinking just get the $25 plan for the unlimited data for fun for a couple months and still keep my cricket. Then I could keep it/sell it/whatever.

I won't have it until Tuesday. It's being shipped to me. Well, I might get it tomorrow. I got us used. And it comes with minutes left and unlimited data etc until March 26. LOL I don't think I can ever give up my ascend cause I have to have it to hang with you guys/gals! :D Why don't you get one so we can compare notes? :)

Maybe that explains the huge sale that Cricket has been having on these phones. Just trying to deplete inventory.

If thats what I think it is, the size is 256. "how to install" thread pretty much covers it all. I believe it explains how to fix mms. It's fairly simple.

I hast the mms fix on post 4 I think.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering what others chose for the sd ext. partition size. I did choose 256 like recommended, but was curious if people are choosing bigger partitions. Also I haven't did the MMS fix yet. I was wondering if it works or not after the 1.1 Icarus update. I still have no cell service where I'm at, so I can't test it. I guess I'll apply the fix, if MMS is broken. Anyone know if you have to use the MMS fix?

I had to apply the different APN. I was getting MMS but, could not send the. After changing the APN, everything worked fine. Thi is the fix you were talking about right?

Yes...I used 256 for the first one and then the next number it asks for the correct one to use is '0' . Thanks for answering cast's questions. :)

I think that you got your answer now from repo. You will probably have to apply the mms fix if you are on metro. :)

They don't even have the Zio in the lineup any longer. I am thinking that new phones will hit both carriers any day now. :D

Some have chosen bigger partitions, cast, but the developer (isaacj87) recommends 256 and I think it is wise to go with his recs. ;)

You did everything just purrfect, little missy! LOL

Yeah, sorry if I didn't explain myself accurately. http://androidforums.com/ascend-all-things-root/287987-how-install-icarus-1-1-isaacj87.html post number 4 is what I'm talking about. I guess I have to apply the fix;0) Thanks.

Yes...the answer is yes!!! LOL Cast! :D

I chose 1G for the partition (I also have a 8G:D card so I have the space to play with). I used the MMS fix, whether I needed to or not I don't know but better safe than sorry.

I got an 8gig but I filled it with musik already ahahahaaha. I set up 256 but read a few people using 1 gig. I guess so you can install more apps right;0) That would mean I'd have to delete music;0( I added 5 gigs of music and it still isn't enough. Time to look for a 16gig:D Thanks for the info.

Yeah that partition is for your apps. and unless you plan on having lots of apps (I don't know yet since I've only had it for 2 weeks) the 256 should be good enough. Just make sure your 16G is at least a class 4, I was told that the bigger SD cards can slow down your phone so I would try to get a class 10 if you can.

I finally just ordered a Kingston 16GB (Class 4) MicroSDHC card. I got it from newegg.com

I'm tempted to install Icarus 1.1 now but I guess I'll wait 'til I get the card LOL

Thanks for the heads up. I got a class 2 now, but it operates at over class 4. Some manufactures are at what they state and some are way over. Sandisk always under rates there cards. I took a chance and it was definitely underrated. It's writing at 5 MB/s and reads at 11 MB/s. I always try to buy sandisk. I've gotten kingston and transcend that had good read and write speeds. I would stay away from the off brands like ADATA and Ridata. I don't have the cache on the sd card, but the apps load pretty quick.
