That is easy.
Notice the last week.
Verizon releases the incredible. Great phone.
Apple then talks about apple 4g and drops a hardware sample pictures.
Wonder want is getting media attention. Hmmm. One min. Looking.
Oh the apple ipad and iphone 4g. But they have either been released with weeks of coverage or are months out.
Amazing how every time a competitor releases something or has a news story, apple manages to steal back the headline.
Amazing.
The iphone will be announced one week after the evo. It would take 3 small moves from apple to flood every major news site with Apple products. To the point where no one will find any thing on evo, except for the forums.
Case in point?
Alex from spring designs was released on april 13. It is such a cool little reader.
Did anyone hear about it? Ten days after the ipad lauch. And all you heard was ipad.
Need another case in point? the pre. Launched the same time. Once again apple tossed it into overdrive. Flooding apple every where. At least 30 different stories at engadget alone. From june 3 to 13.
Palm Pre? 3 stories.
The same will be with the evo. If they release it in june. Apple will flood the new stations with soo much media attention. That the poor sorry marking people at sprint will not even get a chance to breathe.
They will just release press release and apple will counter each move with a "leak".
When you are fighting apple you have to take your hits when you can.
If they release in mid-to-late may, it would be a different story. Apple would have to really, really, really try hard to over power that.
Same thing I've been saying all along man, you do NOT release a phone a month before or after the iphone, you have to get as much seperation from it as you can to really get any media hype.
The Evo is on sprint so that is already a hurdle it'll have to jump in many peoples minds, sprint is still considered 2nd rate by a lot of people out there and the phone selection is honestly still garbage.
As far as releasing close to the iphone, the evo will get very little hype if it releases around the iphone no doubt about it, the tech media are on apples nutts like crazy and always have been even if they deny it. I swear engaget would give Steve Jobs bowel movements a positive review if he'd let them check one out.
The main marketing point that distinguishes the evo from the iphone will be that it will have 4G functionality, the thing is most people won't have access to that for a while so that's going to have limited marketing value, it seems most of the other things that tie evo will have the iphone 4G will have as well like the front facing camera (don't know how AT&T will be able to handle that added pressure) it'll have a higher res screen then the current iphones and it could possibly even be larger although honestly 3.5 inches is already a good size and it'll have a better camera with a flash.
I know some think the 4.3 screen will make people want the evo more than the iphone but that could be a thing that goes both ways, some may think the Evo is too large because of the screen size and want something a little more pocket friendly like the iphone. If you've held a HD2 you know it is a substantial device and the Evo is slightly larger as far as thickness.
The fact that apple may be putting "4G" in the title of the iphone will also from a marketing perspective negate the 4G on the Evo for the people that really don't know the difference out there and confuse them into thinking they can both do the same thing.
I've been saying for a while now as I know many have that they needed to get this phone out by mid May to really let it hit it's potential from a sales perspective, I know they can't just throw it out if it's not ready but I would think and hope they are doing everything they can to get it out as fast as possible and not just being arrogant and thinking because they are finally putting a good phone on their network that people will just come running to sprint.
As I said before no matter what happens with the Evo sprint is going to have to offer more than just this phone, they need a nice selection of devices not just one nice on and a bunch of crap. One thing I think they should do is instead of releasing the legend as is here in the states, see if they can get HTC to up the screen size to 3.5 or 3.6 inches and give it a snapdragon processor. That tough unibody build looks pretty cool and it already runs fairly quickly on the slower processor it has now but if they upped the screen size and the processor it could get all of the nice bells and whistles the desire has yet it would still have it's unique unibody construction.
