***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

looks like apple was awarded another ridiculous patent, that should make it irritating for google, and more importantly us users

Slide to Unlock? Patented! | 9to5Mac | Apple Intelligence

Thier patent only covers sliding from left to right, and on a certain position on the screen.

HTC's slide down isn't covered, nor Motorola because it's slightly different, nor Samsungs, which doesn't resemble it at all.

Non-issue.

Not sure why everyone is saying a possible delay to November 17th. Nothing reliable that I've seen so far has said that. Of course it's possible, as there's been no official announcement. Hell we had that idiot report from earlier saying that it wasn't going to be out until Summer 2012.

As for Steven's tester, just because he saw a "minor spec improvement" doesn't mean that the testing phone he's seeing it on isn't being packed into boxes right now for the rest of us as well. Even if he's seeing any kind of change, even a hardware change, that doesn't mean that the phone hasn't been thoroughly tested by primary QA folks and is just the final revision being sent out for the general population.

I guess you didn't get his kidding :)

You guys are the most pessimistic bunch I have ever come across.
I personally like being a realist. To me a $200 iPhone 4S 16GB gives me pause. Especially when everything we read makes it seem like they are making the phone cheaper. I want a great phone, but the Galaxy Nexus seems like a good phone that you will pay dearly for! :(

Good thing ICS doesn't use slide to unlock anymore. ;)

It's more of a pull to outer ring positions. Software patents have to be very specific in their execution from my understanding.
As you said, have to be very specific.

Even prior implementations didn't infringe. It's not "slide to unlock" that patented, it's "slide to unlock that looks exactly like this".

Apple handles the prices of their phones though so they have more leeway than other manufacturers.

Is it verizon more than anything else that causes for the high prices ? Seems like all the 4g phones are 300?

If it's a software problem, RELEASE IT. This thing is 99% functional and I want it NOW. They can always do an OTA to fix the 1% once they have that ironed out. Unless the phone and LTE radio are completely shot (which they're not, being THIS close to release), then we can live with, er, "undocumented features".

I can't possibly disagree with this more strongly. This is the LAST thing I want. I want it to be released working well, I want the reviews to be great (they won't if there are software problems), and I want a great user experience out of the box. Will there be bugs whenever it comes out? Sure I know that. But if they can polish some things up in the next few weeks that standout, it can only make it better.

I am not going do disintegrate if this thing comes out a few weeks later, but in better shape. I know it's been a long wait for all of us, we should hope they make the wait worth it ..

This kind of attitude makes me want to kick puppies.

Actually... I was going to write a response but I can't, because it's going to get deleted as aggressive and personal.

Suffice to say: this is a horrible idea and is the EXACT OPPOSITE of what rational human beings actually want, regardless of their professed impatience.

It's actually quite a bit more vague than that:

"A device with a touch-sensitive display may be unlocked via gestures performed on the touch-sensitive display. The device is unlocked if contact with the display corresponds to a predefined gesture for unlocking the device. The device displays one or more unlock images with respect to which the predefined gesture is to be performed in order to unlock the device. The performance of the predefined gesture with respect to the unlock image may include moving the unlock image to a predefined location and/or moving the unlock image along a predefined path. The device may also display visual cues of the predefined gesture on the touch screen to remind a user of the gesture"

I wonder if Android Forums has a group health plan for all the ulcers this thread is going to cause people? I'm quite surprised that, this late in the game, we're still having euphoric highs and manic lows...

I'm looking for some Sigmund Freud couch time myself. I have lost my mind in deciding to not wait for reviews and 1st round price drops and will be in line at the nearest Costco. My kid asked me when she is getting her Ice Cream Sandwich and I.........................
So........ whats the deductible?

I guess you didn't get his kidding :)

:)
Sure I did. But I can't let opportunities like that go by

What you found is a pic of one of my X-Wives.

One of??!! Lol. I'd hate to see the others then.

I guess I'm the only one that thinks OfTheDamned's avatar is HOT, blood and all. *sigh* I know I'm weird... :(

Nope. While I like the other one more, the Halloween inspired one is strangely hot to me too
and I don't play for the opposite team, never even got called into the minors

That looks like an abstract of the patent. The claims are the only thing you really have negative rights to. Turn to the end of the patent and look for the numbered list of claims.

Wait for the price drop. Most people don't care about anything like root or a "true google experience" & are likely only to see the big screen as the best selling point. I expect a $50 price drop fairly quickly to better compete with the iPhone 4S.

But it also comes with artwork to describe the function. With many patents to my name, I know how to make them intentionally vague, and also what stands up if challenged.

Even in Apples latest rounds of lawsuits, I don't remember seeing this brought up. The patent office needs a swift kick for granting some of these overly obvious patents. Software and electronics patents really need to die. I'm not talking about inventing the new superchip, I'm talking about "Method and apparatus for measuring voltage" type patents that are just companies trying to develope a warchest for litigation.

I agree. I mean you know the tech sites will hate it because it doesn't have an apple on the back and will be biased from the start. You don't want to have any glaring software bugs to hinder how great the phone can be.
