Thanks for your insight guys. I figured it would be roughly the same, I think I'm just going to straight out buy it full retail in that case..
I did the math a while back, and it is almost a wash. If you can snag a loyalty discount, since that will only apply to a subsidized price, I would add a line. Don't forget you will need a dumb phone for the extra line, so if you don't have one, will need to add that in to your comparison.

A couple people did the math about 20k posts ago, I think the difference turned out to be like 30-40 $ IF you play games so you don't get stuck with a data plan also. (on the add a line, you need to have access to a dumb phone to put on it).

Without official pricing from VZW its hard to say for sure though.

If I remember correctly - a Family Plan is 9.99 a month to add. You can drop the current line down to 9.99 a month (x24 = 239.76). So basically the phone would be $540 all together unless you can get someone who wants to be on your family plan for say.... $15 a month w/ just a regular cell. :)

Or if you have a big family plan, just rotate numbers in/out so it's only a small amount.

Example: If your next upgrade is 8/12.. then you pay $80 + $299.99. Just rotate numbers back/forth and cancel the last line that is up.

I don't see Verizon charging a monthly fee to use ISIS when it comes out.....I think after they saw what happened to the big banks that tried to charge a monthly fee for debit cards there will be no charge.

For people buying off contract:
Have you considered just opening up a new line and paying monthly? Would that work out to be cheaper? I'm still trying to figure this out, if the phone is 299 with 2-yr contract..Anyone with some insight?

The other factor is I am hearing that you cannot pre order (if there is a pre order) if you are not eligible for upgrade or opening a new line..

Kinda OT to your post.......
My contract is up 1/1/2012 and I am renewing to keep my unlimited data. If I go off contract I would be a sitting duck for a policy change that could wipe my unlimited data.

I think The Chief did a study on buying subsidized vs retail and the math was not much different in what you pay for the device either way. Not sure. Chief?

you forgot to factor in taxes with everything each line comes out to be about exactly $14.43, and the fact that Vzw's 2 year plans usually aren't exactly 24 months, they are 22 or 20 until another upgrade is available.

I wonder how/if net neutrality can be applied to wireless carriers. If applicable, wouldn't it essentially prevent Verizon/T-Mo/AT&T/Sprint etc. from blocking you from using say Google Wallet, or ISIS, or any other payment method simply because its not the one they support?

The family plan number is correct, but you have to remember that there are taxes on the line, which add almost $5 per month. I did this once, and my bill went up 14.71 per month (will vary a little depending on location of course). That extra $5 makes a big difference over 2 years.

Now if you are not opposed to changing your phone number, you could then cancel whichever line's contract ends next, and it would be a little less. Just don't think you can change your number on the line that stays open to the one you cancelled... Verizon is wise to this and doesn't allow it. ANd of course if you have unlimited data on your line now, you would lose it with this.

Verizon Marketing and Corp - "The GNex launch shall be handled "THIS" way. Any leaks or deviation shall be dealt with severely, up to and including termination. Secret shoppers and callers shall be used to police this policy.

Verizon/GNex/AF fanatics - "How bout that Gnex?"

Verizon Workers - Remembers Policy, wonders if he/she is being secret shopped ..... "I know nothing"

The threat from ON HIGH must have been effective. Corporate edicts are more prevalent than ever. People are more scared than ever for their jobs.

Conclusion: Better secrecy than ever.

I will be buying off contract. This is the way I see it.
Contract price $299+tax=$320 +24 months @$11 per month = total $584.
Off contract $649+tax= $694

Difference = $110 more with off contract buy.

Well, if you buy the phone off contract you would definitely be fine as far as unlimited goes because your basically just adding a phone that you "already had on the side." Both lines in my account have unlimited and I've switched in and out of phones multiple times. You wont lose unlimited UNLESS you switch to a basic phone, thats of course until vzw decides to change their game plan.

OT:

Finally finished reading 11/22/63 by Stephen King. Good story, and for ONCE in his frakking life he didn't screw up the ending. I swear, that guy never thought up a lousy ending he didn't like (The Stand foremost among them). He always either cheats or cops out. This time around, not so much.

Highly recommended.

On topic:

Does a soft launch mean no official announcement?

I just called the store in State College, and they said they did not have a release date yet.
Which one? The corporate store on Atherton, or the 3rd party reseller (can't remember exact location...)

Goooood morning Neximaniacs!!
Nothing new yet I see other than a couple silly press releases we care nothing about.... oh well, stay positive!! Come on Big Red, give is something!

I got my email about the rezound at 2PM my time, on the same day it rolled out.

That means if people lined up for it and they only had 5 and sold out, I was SOL.

I didn't bite, but I wouldn't trust the emails either if you want to be first.

If you do not already have a family plan this doesn't work at all. You can't just "add a line" to a single line. It increases the base plan from 39.99 to 69.99

So it actually costs you $30 x24 mo = $720 + $299 phone to do this.

I don't think that's true. I had opened a VZW line for my Xoom when I bought it on contract. I then bought the 10.1 Galaxy Tab off contract (way before I was upgrade eligible), and was able to preorder it with no problem. Just chose the off contract price and it let me do the order. don't see why it'd be different for any other line.

I just got a text from that corporate store guy. He still says Thursday "or possibly Friday". I don't think he really knows anything; he's just guessing.

OT:

So Ron Santo finally makes the Hall. 1 year after he died. Frakking HOF voters. Too little, too late.
