In the past though, it would scan for updates and show a little red and blue down and up arrow in the left corner that it was looking for updates, then when it didn't find an update it would say no updates at this time, wait 24 hours or something and show a timer that I couldn't check again for a certain amount of time.

Now though, none of that happens, the behavior is totally different. Now just a box comes up that says "No Firmware" it doesn't look on the network for updates or anything and doesn't give a timer that I have to wait to check again. I can hit the Software Update immediately again and it says the same thing.

So it appears broken.
 
So far this update has been positive for me.


  • GPS is now working.
  • General UI lag seems to be gone.
  • Phone signal seems to be better. Getting 2-3 bars instead of 0-2.

The only 2 things I didn't like in the update were non-adjustable, max brightness in the video player and the youtube widget change.

Edit: Just found out you can change the video player brightness when you launch it by itself.

I was experiencing the same thing earlier, at least to me it appeared to be server load. I waited a few hours and it started working again.

Yesterday the text arrived, and within 10 minutes +/- 2 minutes, the update was pushed. From start to finish the update took 7 min 25 sec. There were two long pauses, the first when the progress bar was at 50% and the second during the Galaxy S splash screen, other than that the process was seamless, smooth and trouble free.

Result? Faster more responsive overall performance. QuickOffice included and GPS corrected. Checked with my Garmin, and found to be accurate, not like the Garmin of course but good enough for a phone, as compared to some of my others.

Hrm, maybe its something that will fix itself in time then, I guess I'll wait and see.

I came from a blackberry, and on that phone i could re-initialize the connection to the server in it by refreshing the hosts, is there a way to do that with this phone?

First thing I thought. lol. I'm seeing readings of -81dbm (via phone status) in my house and I've never seen that before. Wonder if they boosted power to the radio (and hence the better sat locks as well). I can still deathgrip it and make the signal drop, but now that it's starting from a higher level it doesn't go to a complete drop of signal. It'll still drop from 3 to 1 - or even 0 - bars but not a complete signal drop.

I just checked the radio status and it says 2% no signal since last night. Normally I'm at 5% - 20% and have seen as high as 50%! Still too early to tell but it does seem to be marginally improved.
 
I would strongly suggest anyone who has updated to wait 2-3 days before getting overly-excited about an apparent improvement in GPS reception.

The list of people who were raving about it yesterday only to complain about it being bad again today is growing.
 
I just checked for updates. It found and downloaded them and rebooted my phone. The installer popped up and ran to 100% then said:

"Update is failed"

Nice English Samsung. Anyways, the phone rebooted and popped up a message saying the update failed. Anyone else had this problem? Of course now I have to wait another 24 hours.
 
Both my wife and I did the update and no quick office for us and my gps only seems to work occasionally. Hers rarely works. I don't get it...

are you rooted?
 
Being rooted should not be a problem. I updated mine while rooted.

If you installed some mod (lag fix, circle battery [definitely], anti-bloatware, etc.) that removed or modified some system files or if you ran ODIN to flash another firmware or get back to "stock" at some point, that might be it.

I wish I had seen this message before updating mine this afternoon. I just trusted AT&T and Samsung and lost all my data. Here is my story:

1) After 4-5 tries, I was able to get update and it successfully installed.
2) Tried my gps but did not see any improvements, so I decided to rebooted my phone
3) After rebooting, I noticed that I am not able to enter letters for my password (after update it only allows you to enter digits) so there is no way to enter password
4) Spent almost 2 hours with at&t and samsung but no help, at&t store offered to give me a new phone, but doesn't want to do so until I can recover my data

I would appreciate if anyone knows and can help me recover data (pics and videos) from my phone before I master reboot (Samsung said that might work)

Samsung said there was a 50% chance I will not loose my data, I do not understand what that means. How can you not know how your software behaves :confused:

EDIT: I can still receive call on my phone, just cannot unlock to get to the homescreen.

EDIT: After couple of more reboots, now even the little keyboard has changed to a numeric keypad, weird.

Um... a lot of rooted problems are actually having problems with the update, including me. You can read all about it in the big OTA thread.

Nope no mods. I did install Titanium Backup and removed the AT&T bloatware apps though.

I'm confused here...as far as I knew you could only use a stupid pattern to lock your phone. Is this an app you have or what?

Maybe they meant the reset will not erase the internal/external sdcard where the pictures are stored. When I did a factory reset through the GUI on mine, it did not erase the files on the sdcard. But I think in your case, you'll need to go to recovery mode to reset, which I'm not sure what happens...

This is built in feature not sure from android or samsung. It was not enabled by default but when I setup my exchange email account I had no option but to create a password.

I do not have external SD card and the samsung customer service guy had not clue how the master reset would behave...
