basic root w/ z4root, was too lazy to go the whole method :)

As long as you don't have clockwork and all the bloat is still on your phone you can get it I'm about 99% sure. You may get it even without the bloat, but clockwork is what stops it for sure. But I'm curious why root if not adding custom roms, kernels, etc?

Based on the Verizon Wireless Software Update announcement:

For step-by-step instructions on how to perform the download, please visit verizonwireless.com/fascinatesupport.

http://support.vzw.com/pdf/system_update/samsung_fascinate_instructions.pdf

Based on the "official" instructions to update, I just tried option:
1.) OTA User Initiated
I received the InnoPath ActiveCare message:
No New Software Update Available

I am aware that giving all Fascinate phones the ability to download the update all at one time could cause B/W issues, but they shouldn't write instructions on how to perform an OTA User Initiated update. Especially when any Fascinate user could attempt the OTA User Initiated update and they are then told no update is available.

I know it's petty, but just another log on the fire. :o

usually otas are rolling...meaning its not available to everyone all at once

I just got off the phone with Verizon tech support regarding this DL09 update, and they had no idea about it, I actually had to email them the link to the download instruction page...lol They basically said to hold tight, and they had no info about it. :(

Yeah you went to the wrong peeps if you need info on vzw updates ;):p
I will say the folks at *611 are very friendly and helpful but in terms of technically updates rarely is that a satisfying experience

Yea it seems that we in here know weeks, if not more, in advance to tech support.

So this will probably ignite a firestorm but here is proof Froyo test builds are out for the SF, not sure one has been posted here yet

Now having stirred the pot Im gone:p
All jokes aside its coming not today or this month but its coming.
Excellent news if this isn't 'shopped: looks like we're skipping straight to 2.2.1 instead of fooling around with 2.2 interim versions like the other NA Galaxy S models.

As for the iphone, anyone really tempted by that inferior hardware likely doesn't even know what Froyo is!

i think a lot of the issues with the galaxy s phones and froyo that you here about are generally in reference to 2.2.....from what i can gather at xda 2.2.1 is an improvement....but really if/when we ever get a very functional aosp gb/froyo build i wouldnt go back to touchwiz if it was android 134.2.1

Do you guys think the Fascinate will ever get 2.3 Gingerbread?
The general consensus right now seems to be that we'll indeed get an official Froyo release from Samsung/Verizon. However thoughts on an official Gingerbread release are unknown, and thought to be very unlikely.

However, once Froyo is officially released, the independent devs will likely hack together an unofficial Gingerbread release shortly after.

This is where the love/hate relationship with technology comes from, because why would we be so inclined to purchase new equipment, if our phones were continually updated. Even though most droid devices could probably handle the gingerbread os, they want us to buy a new phones. I hope one day that the update restrictions that the carriers hold will disappear, and come completely clean of adware...

this is why phones should be more like pcs. heres the phone. pic an os. install, have fun, with proper drivers any os should run on any phone, welll almost

There was a guy who came into the VZW store today and said he wanted off AT&T. He said he wanted to do it today so he could be an existing customer for when the iPhone comes out.

It was almost as if he said it expecting the sales rep to go, "Oh, we'd be happy to steal a customer from at&t." The associate told him he's going to eat all the fees and would have to purchase a phone today, he didn't care about that or paying for a brand new phone on Feb 3.

It's amazing the "cult" that iphoners have become. It's so weird I don't roll my eyes, I tilt my head and give a "what the f" look at them. Seriously...am I wrong?

Good news/Bad News time:

The good news - the Fascinate update is hitting:
An update is primed and ready for the Samsung Fascinate...

And now, the bad news:
... that is definitely not Android 2.2. Nope, it’s simply a bug fixer and bloatware updater that probably won’t even affect the way you experience your phone. Not sure what else there really is to say about it except, sorry.
Enhancements:
+ Updated versions of preloaded applications, including V CAST videos, City ID, VZ Navigator,

At least they are fixing the GPS issues many have had (sad it took them THIS long to release a fix just for THAT), and a few other minor bugs that shouldn't have taken long to correct.

After this whole debacle, I'm wishing there was some way to exchange my Fascinate for another phone. Is it a phenomenal phone that beats the iPhone (in my opinion) at almost every point? Yes.

But I'm a tech junkie, as are many of you; and we desire the cutting edge and the new. To be stuck with Eclair for all this time, and then FroYo (after it's considered outdated after most devices upgrade to Gingerbread and eventually Honeycomb) indefinitely would peeve me to no end.

I purchased my Fascinate in November and I feel that I should have waited a little while longer to get my hands on the Bionic and all these other new phones witnessed at CES. Plus, it seems Motorola is a more reputable phone company...

I know it's an underhanded question, but does anyone know any loopholes or special cases in which you can immediately reselect a new phone of equal or better quality after holding your current phone for months? (what about with an extended warranty?)

Thanks in advance.
