***Official Samsung Fascinate 2.2 Speculation Thread***

Thank you for the link! But I would caution you not to make unwarranted assumptions. We've no idea about the source of those ROMs: for all we know, the individual leaking them is developing them himself. There is no indication at all that they're representative of any official work on VZW's part or that they're suggestive of any imminent official release. There continues to be no communication from Verizon on this issue.

You can rest assured, the devs who leak these things would not put their entire reputation on the line, that they've spent months building; just for even a "little white lie" like that.

Many of us are also using the tag #froyogate :)

brug -- no, of course not, and obviously not from scratch. Am I wrong that both of the latest versions of leaked firmware were in fact being developed for the Mesmerize, a phone similar enough to the Fascinate that with a few tweaks from Adrynalyne they functioned just fine, but were -not- apparently developed for the Fascinate itself? I've heard this from more than one source over there and was curious.

As for the communication thing, if you think it's normal to assure your customer base that a product will be ready "no later than" a specific date, and then go 4 months beyond that date without any substantive update or explanation, we're just going to have to agree to disagree.

It's not using the Mesmerize radio. What they did was took some of the files that were fixed/updated and patched the VZW rom. It's pretty hilarious that they can debug and get a stable ROM faster than VZW can review one. Occasionally someone will take updated Android code, recompile it and inject it into a VZW build since it takes Samsung/VZW so long to do it. It's almost like the manufacturers are fragmenting the Android operating system and the hackers are cross pollonating it to defragment it.

After seeing how easy it was to load ROMs on the Samsung, I'm convinced that Samsung has the right idea over Moto and HTC. Unfortunately the only reason Samsung is so easy is because they are so screwed up and slow to fix things. That being even though they have the smallest aftermarket footprint (Touchwiz).

I think its Verizon needs the heat.

+100

I just got off the phone with VZW's 611 group. They kept pawning it off onto Samsung, until I flatly said,"Every other Galaxy S line has this software. There are leaked versions of it on the internet, from Samsung. The only thing holding this up is VZW's QA team, for some reason. I want this fixed, so my dock works as advertised."

They finally accepted the blame, and offered to credit my account for the dock. Now, I have to figure out if I want to keep it, and hope for the update to get it working (Audio out on the desk cradle doesn't work), or return it for credit.

If I do return it, I'm making sure I call 611 when it comes time for contract renewal, and letting them know I'm sorely disappointed in their lack of "promise keeping".

No that is not correct. There have been three leaked versions specific to the fascinate: dl30, eb01, and now ec01.

The super clean rom is built with bits from both the mesmerize and fascinate. The ec01 that i linked yesterday is the newest fascinate leak, and we'll see custom roms built on that very soon.

When has verizon provided a specific date for froyo's release? I have never seen anything in writing from vzw corporate that it was due on any particular date. As far as the car dock thing goes, that plain old sucks, but I don't know that an actual date was ever committed to.

Does anyone know when/if the OS for the Samsung Fascinate is going to be upgraded!? I am starting to get a little bored with the set up and have only have the phone about 3 or 4 months. It has to be coming soon right!?
:oMANDA

I'm not entirely sure how anybody could miss the fact that they did do precisely that.

For approximately the last 4 months of 2010, Verizon Wireless, Inc., stated publicly and explicitly that the Froyo/Android 2.2 update for the Fascinate would be released, quote, "no later than the end of the year," end quote, where "end of the year" was, more specifically, a reference to the end of the Gregorian calendar year 2010.

It's now 12 April 2011, hence the general tumult 'round these parts.

There is no reason to be condescending.

If you are so certain then you should easily be able to provide an example of this IN WRITING from verizon directly. Not a forum post, or a so and so said such and such statement, but a published commitment from vzw of a release date. I have not seen such a thing. I'd love to see one.

I'm in class / tied up until this evening, but I'll be happy to provide a series of links for you later if by that time others have not.

I blame Samsung the HTC Thunderbolt is already getting Gingerbread.

I honestly believe that this one is all on Verizon. Every other Samsung Galaxy S phone based in the US is on Froyo. Galaxy S Phones in Europe are receiving Gingerbread updates this month. The only factor I see here is that none of those phones are on Verizon.

And the Thunderbolt has not received Gingerbread yet, just a time
frame as when owners should see a gingerbread release.

Yep. This one IS on Verizon. I recommend swarming them with complaints. Even if we don't get our way, at least we'll be making things a little unpleasant and letting them know they can't just walk all over us. And we're letting them know that we're dissatisfied with Bing. Don't forget to complain about that when we call/email.

Give 'em hell.

Talked to a Verizon rep today. Asked about a Froyo update. She told me that they're releasing it based on region and that I'll get a text message to update. When I asked about a timeframe, I got the usual "soon".

Just finished writing a strongly worded e-mail to Verizon. I tried to make it very clear that a good part of their most knowledgeable customer base is growing more and more dissatisfied with their lack of attention and communication on the matter. I know they don't give two you know what's, but hopefully some of our cries do get through.

If anything I'll follow the example of Andy Dufresne from the Shawshank Redemption, and send one letter a week (or day) until I get a satisfactory response!

For those who are complaining, if you have the desktop cradle; make sure you touch on the fact that the device you bought FROM VERIZON is not functioning as advertised due to this.

Demand the following, and don't hang up until you get this:
* At a minimum, ability to return your cradle, or get reimbursed for buying it

* That Verizon accepts blame for it. You might have to bring up some salient points to get it across (There are leaked versions for the Fascinate, All other Galaxy S phones in the US have it, etc)

* That you know it's insane to have to void your warranty in order to get promised functionality, and get them to agree.

Phones calls are usually recorded, and enough recordings with these points FINALLY gets someone other than the help desk tech to hear them.

Maybe if someone who has a strong and crafty command of the English language were to draft a strongly worded form letter to Verizon and we were ALL to send this same letter they would see that we all stand united in the same dark corner. Power in numbers.

I like this idea.

Form letters are generally ignored. Phone calls are where it's at :) Phone calls costs them money (Tying up the phone line + paying a support rep + whatever they lose monetary-wise due to what they have to do to rectify).

You are probably right. But the image of huge sacks of letters from angry Fascinate owners getting dumped all at one time at the feet of someone higher up at Verizon responsible for this issue seems more fun.

In this corner, Fascinate. In the other corner, X.

It's a race. Will Fascinate get OTA Froyo before X gets OTA Gingerbread? I'm taking Fascinate comes first. Whose with me?

P.S. I never win anything.
