***Official Samsung Fascinate Pre-Release Thread***

Can you tell us more about it...did the build feel cheap? Everything you found out.... we want to know. :p

Had a plastic glossy shell. Didn't feel cheapish though. I did notice the usb port was on the top of the phone, power button on the side. Touch buttons on the bottom were pretty responsive.

It had a cool little "Jigsaw puzzle" unlock. You drag the missing jigsaw piece to the spot to unlock. Silly, but cool.

The animated wallpaper was smooth. It was a water ripple type animation.

I'm new here so be please be patient. Like a lot of you I took the hands on tour of the Droid X but it seemed way too large for my liking. I found the Galaxy S phone online a week or so ago and have loved it ever since. I've been reading everything I can on it and am 95% sure this will be the one whenever VZ decides to launch. I'm coming out of Storm 1 so this should be a big improvement. Anyone have an update on a release date yet?

Just held the VZW Galaxy S phone (Facinate)...

HOLY COW!!! That screen is gorgeous!!!! The device is quite thin and light.

If software matches up, this thing is gonna be killer!

I'm not trying to sound like a smart-elic but how did you get your hands on one of these if they have not released yet? Do you or someone you know work for VZ?

The clarity and richness of the display are really killer. It's yet to be determined how Samsung's Android OS interpretation works out.

great! now I'm going to have to return my X for the fascinate like I did the Dinc!

Just send me your X. I'll put in a good word and see that you get the very first Facinate ;)

I'm looking for affirmation, here, bro. Are you saying that you prefer the X? :p

I'm high maintenance/needy. I need reassurance. ;)

The truth of the matter is that all phones are fantastic.. fantastic, that is, until they've been on sale to the public for a week or two. ;)

So the latest rumor is that the Fascinate won't be released until late September. This rumor comes from a blog post that also had a photo of the phone "in the wild," so the presumption is that this tipster is reliable. (Though I do wonder whether access to a test handset necessarily means that the tipster is privy to Verizon's release plans.)

Of course, I've heard rumors ranging from August 9 (which I don't believe for a second) to October. Still, September seems most likely, though I was hoping for earlier rather than later. But I guess it makes sense that Verizon would want to let the Droid 2 have some breathing room.

I'm disappointed to hear late September, but I suppose it could work in the Fascinate's favor. Will such a late launch make it possible to ship the Fascinate with 2.2 out of the box (the Galaxy S update is supposed to be out by then), and maybe with the GPS fix already applied? That might actually make Verizon look smart for waiting a bit...

With a late September launch, will this be the last 3G Droid for Verizon? Any other Android phones on the horizon this Fall? With the way they're fasttracking the LTE network, I'm hoping any early pre-production test units are being requested to include 4G so we have our first phone come December. I like a lot about the Fascinate, and the Galaxy S series in general, but sucks for Samsung and fans to have this phone come out so late with 4G about 45-60 days around the corner. Wonder if it will hurt sales. Seems that Verizon put the screws to Samsung on the Omnia II and they're doing the same thing here. Say what you want about HTC being the red headed stepchild compared to the favored Motorola, Samsung is the nuisance neighbor kid across the street when it comes to the smartphone line-up.

The Fascinate won't be a Droid phone, and I don't think you'll see an LTE Android phone from Verizon in 2010 so there will probably another 3G Droid during the Holidays. An LTE capable phone won't probably pop up until late Q1(2011) at the earliest...at least that'd be my guess.

Honestly, the Samsung probably has the best processor of any Android phone out right now. To simply say that Qualcomm also has a 1 GHz chip out on the market is not doing the Hummingbird justice: the thing is FAST.

I've played with a Captivate and Vibrant. You could tell the speed difference between those phones and any phone that has the 1 GHz Snapdragon. Plus, the GPU capability is what, 2x better? Maybe even 4x?

The screen is beautiful and I think 4" is the sweet spot for mobile phones if you consider mobile browsing a necessity on a smart phone.

If the battery lasts as long as some Vibrant users are claiming - "one day" of moderate use with 50% left at the end of the day - then the Fascinate will be a slam dunk.

Shame about the 2 GB onboard. I can't get over that. I bet VZW did that on purpose in retaliation for Samsung "running low" on AMOLED screens.

And why now FFC? Is it because the feature would steer potential Droid X and Droid 2 buyers? Or is the iPhone 4 around the corner and VZW doesn't want Apple to worry about another phone having the same flagship feature?

Who knows?

I do know there are some morons at the helm of Verizon. Lots of stupid decisions made in the past few years.

-Yes hummingbird is the best cpu/gpu combo that is out so far
-as far as UI speed is concerned, Incredible with slower chip is much smoother, I blame this on Samsung's software failure. I agree that when opening and running apps hummingbird phones will be significantly faster.
-I would have liked it better with 4.3inch or something
-Battery life stories I am reading from Global SGS, Vibrant, Captivate have been exact opposite of yours. It usually lasts a work day but nothing spectacular.
-2GB should not be problem for MOST, as you still have the sd card slot. so with 32 + 2 = 34GB we should be happy. Also, your conspiracy theory makes almost zero sense. Main reason that I have heard is to create some room for CDMA chip.
-FFC, I have said this before. VZW will not release a phone with FFC before LTE. One reason is data rate, another reason is the fact that CDMA can't do both data and voice at the same time. AND it does not make sense for VZW to use data for both voice and video due to latency and other issues. Sprint has FFC only because it also has 4G.

4g for phones wont be out til next year only 4g wireless cards will be out this year

That seems to be the type of result that is application dependent. For some people it may be the best combination, for others it may not, that seems to depend on your use.

The SD card is great for not using up the internal memory for pictures, videos, etc. but do all apps allow them to be loaded to the user accessible SD card? My understanding is that this is not always true, especially under Android 2.1.

As far as the chipset goes all modern phones use 1GHz Arm Cortex A8 core (as seen in Inc's Snapdragon, Droid X's OMAP 3630, Galaxy S's Hummingbird).
With gpu Snapdragon uses Adreno, which is actually not very good other than drawing triangles, lol. OMAP uses SGX 530 and Hummingbird uses SGX 540. I bet you that if all these phones use vanilla android + same firmware, they will all be smooth as butter. Only when you run games or the like, you will notice any difference.

With 2.2 you can store all apps in SD card. But even with 2.1 and earlier, most apps are less than 1MB and at most 5MB, where the packages always get a choice of being installed in your SD card. I think apps to SD is useful but only if you have over 1000 apps.

Any updates on potential release? My 3rd Eris just showed up. I'm getting sick of having to replace these because the dialer (and other phone related functions) quit working ....

Also, for anyone using another Galaxy S variant, any experiences with that HDMI adapter??
