Root One Click Root For The Desire?

Copy all the backed up contents of your SD card on your laptop back to the SD card.

There should be a folder clockwork created on your SD card called "clockwork" and within that folder are your backups. If you boot into recovery and select backup or restore, you can restore your original backups.

If I never manage to get the balls to flash a ROM, have I improved my options at all by rooting?

As it seems I now have less internal storage than I had before. :D
 
As an aside, I think I've realised why the LeeDroid ROM didn't work. I think I was trying to install the .md5 file. Could that be why?

For anybody who is clued up in this area - I'm basically after a ROM which is similar to stock, perhaps with a few additions to aid battery life and whatever else - and also the capability to store apps on the SD card to free up internal storage space.

Based on the research I have done so far, LeeDroid2.2 seems a good shout, as does the one in your signature?

All this talk of radios etc also freaks me out and makes me think I could be setting myself up for a huge fall.

But hey, I've managed to root it today and I've even managed to back up and restore my phone to it's state immediately post-root. :D

I suppose that's one small step for you geniuses, but one giant leap for me! :D

Ha! Rooting scared the cr@p out of me! Same with flashing a ROM. The biggest problem with doing it for the first time is that you don't know what to expect or what you'll see on the phone screen while it's happening. That's what the reading and questions and lists are for - it gets you prepared as much as possible so even if things don't go to plan, you have an idea why and you know some options.

I have an update.zip on my SD card for a transparent notifications bar for LeeDroid that I won't install yet, simply because I have no idea what I need to do to get rid of it if I don't like it. That's the next thing I need to learn.

It's definitely a massive learning curve, that's for sure.

If I download the latest LeeDroid ROM, will that include everything - eg. the apps2sd+, trackpad to wake the phone etc. Or do I need to add everything I want or need bit by bit?

I'm struggling to work out which download link I want and need at the moment!
 
The XDA thread says the Trackpad to Wake feature is included, and I just pressed my trackpad and the lockscreen appeared! Not sure how to unlock with the trackpad though. There's a ROM add-on for removing and adding the wake & unlock feature, so you're good after you flash the ROM.

Do a nandroid backup first, then if you don't like it just restore from that and you should be back where you were beforehands. I'd recommend doing a nandroid before flashing such a mod anyway, just in case something turns out to be incompatible.

Or if you don't like it you can just cook something different at the UOT Kitchen.

Edit: 100th post, finally lose the "junior" tag!

Yeah, I would always nandroid before a flash, and I knew I could restore it if I want to remove an update, but it just seems like an extreme way to do it. I like the additional .zip files that have a .zip to undo the changes, that's a cool idea and should be available more often.

Once draw back I have found is a theme (or any theme element) is held within framework-res.apk

Whenever you flash a theme (or part there of) you replace this with a modified one.

This makes it hard to mix and match elements. You can keep the standard theme for your rom if the theme uses the framework-res.apk from your rom.

Not sure about the below though....

I'm feeling a bit calmer and more chilled out today. I'm almost feeling ready to try flashing LeeDroid's ROM again.

I have a few questions though, so hopefully some of you who use LeeDroid's ROM or who are just Android gurus could answer them.

I backed up my phone immediately after I'd rooted - I backed it up via ClockworkMod and ROM Manager and also backed everything up via Titanium.

I restored it via ROM Manager last night and it worked perfectly.

Does this mean I can return to this state whenever I like, as long is this backup remains in place?

I noticed the backup in ROM Manager was dated. Can I make more than one backup, on different dates, and choose which I return to? Much like a system restore on Windows if you like.

Do all apps work as normal with LeeDroid's ROM, and indeed other ROMS?

Will I need to update the ROM regularly with newer ROMS? Will this be a case of adding little tweaks to what I already have, or a full wipe and flashing a complete new ROM?

I could have imagined it, but I would have sworn I read something about creating more than one partition on the SD card if I want the davlik cache to be stored on the SD card etc.

When the apps are on the SD card, how do I clear the cache etc? Can I do it via settings>applications or do I need to delete a folder via Astro or something?

Dalvik cache is moved to EXT partition when you use a2sd+, along with the apps.

If you go to a newer version of the same rom, wipe should not be neccessary. Wipe just wipes data and removes incompatibilities between the settings stored there for 1 rom with a different rom.

The nandroid is not like system restore. It is more like a norton Ghost image. Its a complete snapshot. System restore on windows is just apps / settings really.

You can take as many of these backups as you like.

Thanks mate. So if anything goes wrong when flashing the ROM, or I wish to return to the state of my phone as per one of my back ups, I can do that relatively easily?

Yep. Just boot into recovery (vol down + power when off) go to "backup and restore" and select the restore you want.

Obviously you will lose call logs and sms received after the backup was taken.

Personally i back these up with mybackup.

What's the situation with the radio on LeeDroid's latest ROM? Will I need to download one separately? Or will I be ok with just the ROM?

I've had no problems with any apps.
You can update as regularly as you want to, as i notice some members on xda are still on older versions of leedroid.

I didn't change my radio (32.44.00.32u_5.09.05.30_2) & ive had no issues so far.

The only thing I'm worrying about at the moment is the partitioning of the SD card which seemed to go a bit weird yesterday.

It didn't show up via Quick System Info, but it did when I looked at my SD Card using partition wizard.
 
I think it looks at the EXT partition AND the a2sd script within the rom to advise if it exists or not.

That's what threw me of course yesterday I think. :o

When it didn't show up via Quick Sytem Info, I think I thought I'd messed up.

I think I can do this now.

Partition the SD Card like I did yesterday - which did work according to partition wizard.

Then flash LeeDroid's latest ROM, following the steps in the above video.

And I should be away! :D

Hopefully.... :D
