Opinions on Apple

I have a bud that swears by MAC. He kills me. Visits about 5 safe sites daily. Loves chirping about no viruses.

For what he paid for his macbook I could have made a laptop that would be pretty slick!

Zune > ipood. I like its software and player better.

Their stuff is so expensive. Why??

I once dated a girl that said "macs are for dumb people"
guess who ended up getting one? HahahahaHaha

I see. That is what I had heard from people I know that regularly use both platforms. Sorry about that (^_^)

Yeah we actually ran a G4 and a G5 in our shop for a while, until I got tired of the instability of the Adobe applications, and the absolutely bonkers networking schemes, and the total and absolute incompatibility with our machines, even some of our network printers which were fairly standard.

What do you guys think about the big A? I really like OS X but I prefer Android over iOS.

I have Apple, windows, android, IOS, Linux and until recently winmo machines.

Overall here is how I see it:

WINDOWS, works with most machines out there, but that depends on the version of windows you are running. There is lots of flexibility provided you are not messing with any bundled applications or features. There are security issues, but most importantly, IMHO is the manner in which software is just allowed to be installed without any system to vouch for it's quality or security. That in and of itself is a major security issue. still if you practice proper safeguards, windows is the industry standard and most software is written for it, so you probably want to learn it.

APPLE OS, The systems is deeply integrated. pretty much any program you run is likely to have a very similar look and feel, and there is something to be said for that. The system is intentionally set up to discourage users from tinkering with settings beyond a basic level. Not much software made for it, but most major pieces of software do make an apple version of what they make. Apple does do a fantastic job of covering the bases and preloading the system with excellent pieces of software that will give most average users most of what they would need. On the downside, I loath itunes and really wish there was a more basic player pre packaged. Also I find that Macs don't play nicely with Android devices.

Linux: Can't beat it in terms of security and use of system resources and eye candy (nothing comes close in this last department). Some versions are for basic users while others require fairly advanced knowhow. It is powerful and allows you very deep access to operating system controls (even more so than windows). The biggest drawbacks with Linux, IMHO is that there are so many distributions, that finding the ones that work for you can literally take weeks of testing different ones. Also, with very few exception, there is no corporate support for Linux, so calling the helpdesk if you have a problem is a no go. that said, most of the big distros have very large and active forums in which people provide help and support regularly. Some versions of Linux are deeply integrated and polished, while others, not so much (btw, this is not necessarily a negative, sometimes this is done intentionally). Another linux issues is it's over-reliance on open source software. because of it, there are tons of incredible pieces of shareware out there that have developed as valid alternatives to popular commercial standards. some are as good or better than the commercial versions, while other come up short. sometimes they come up short in very minor ways, and others in major ones. while running commercial software on linux is possible, It is something that you have to make work and not recommended for the average user. If you don't mind learning a little and have a tech mind, then some flavor of linux might just be for you.

Lots of hate! Apple makes great products, I use a mac at home and I've been using one since the late 80s as a kid.

BUT, their computer offering is not what I want, I just want a tower where you can change the hard drive, or have two hard drives, without risking damaging your $1,500 iMac; I don't want a new monitor when I change computer. I thought about an Ubuntu machine, but it's not really for me, and I really like OS X.

Now, for their other products, I have an iPod since 2002, the big one! It keeps on breaking, I buy used parts on eBay to repair it. The new ones are much better in terms of quality, but the old one is playing the music the same. Where is hurts, you have to hack it to play video files people actually use. I don't care if it doesn't read .ogg and .flac, almost nobody uses that. But video files, not everyone downloads everything through iTunes...

iPhone, same thing. Also, no porn! No sexting (they're coming with a filter or is it already there?) no freedom of choice! Screw you! That's why I went for Android. And my Xperia has a bigger screen and I will make the choice to have or not to have Flash whenever Sony Ericsson updates this phone.

So this is a company that makes great products but should have stopped there, at making great products, instead of selling music, movies, tv shows, in their own proprietary format.

If Adobe releases Photoshop for Linux, I'll make the move!

And no, not even by a longshot, does Gimp come close to photoshop.

And yes, it would be nice if large companies started supporting Linux.

Not Photoshop, but the GIMP comes pretty damn close. Very few users need the capabilities that PS has the GIMP lacks.
Anything I could do in PS I could do in GIMP. Netbeans for PHP, InkScape instead of Illustrator, etc.

I will admit that it is a bit of a curve with GIMP compared to PS

No way, I'm all about the open source thing, but for people who need more than something to toy with, it's Only PS or Illustrator,(corel even sucks to a point, but its a good second place option I guess) not to mention the seamless integration in the last few versions have been a real headache/time saver.

Php, it's all about Notepad++ | 5.8.2 man, and it's open source =)

I've used that. I liked it. I use GIMP and InkScape for web development and design.

On a side note: back on topic... Macs! lol

I love Apple..I eat them to keep my diet..even last sunday I bought 5 of them for 400 yen..3 are still remaining..and i like apple juice too :)

From wikipedia
apples may reduce the risk of colon cancer, prostate cancer and lung cancer.[53] Compared to many other fruits and vegetables, apples contain relatively low amounts of vitamin C, but are a rich source of other antioxidant compounds.[47] The fiber content, while less than in most other fruits, helps regulate bowel movements and may thus reduce the risk of colon cancer. They may also help with heart disease,[58] weight loss,[58] and controlling cholesterol,[58] as they do not have any cholesterol, have fiber, which reduces cholesterol by preventing reabsorption, and (like most fruits and vegetables) are bulky for their caloric content

You know.... I'm taking a new approach to these threads..

I went in and thanked every sarcastic post out there.

Who really gives a crap about fruit?

And who really gives anyone else crap about what fruits they like?

go to a banana forum and ask if THEY like apples.

personally, I hate new york.

I used to have a lot of hate for Apple.. but really, I just despise Steve Jobs. Apple has contributed so much in the technological world, especially in terms of design. For laptops, I refuse to go with any other company other than Apple. Their Macbook Pro design is unmatchable. I tried probably the closest competitor in terms of design, HP Envy line and was disappointed. For phones... I'll stick with Android. For when I go to Europe, I will hopefully find an Android phone that I'm excited about. If not... then I might have to try something else.

Why would you place so much stock on a devices outter shell? It's like buying a ferrari with an engine built by Kia.

The most strenuous thing my laptop will go under: Netflix?

I'm not looking for a powerhouse that has the capabilities of performing like a "Ferrari". Battery life is crucial for me since I'm mobile a lot. Screen quality is very important also. How do you have a Ferrari that has the life of a Prius? Compromise! :)

I take design into heavy account because I'm just the kind of person that really cares about design. Once you've come to really appreciate the unique unibody design of the Macbook pro, other laptops just don't have the same feel of luxury. I take design into heavy account with other things also such as homes, cars, clothes, phones, and so forth.

Also... I'm going to be in Paris. Fashion has a different meaning there than here. Parisians take MUCH better care of themselves and what they wear and carry. It's like NYC or higher end areas of LA, like Beverly Hills or Laguna Beach, but on another level.

And it's all silly nonsense perpetuated by a Neanderthal-like need for acceptance from their peers.

Kind of sad, really. People who depend on others for their happiness are never truly happy.

Opinions differ. :) I never expected anything less.

I worked at NASA for a few summers doing research, and for some odd reason, all of the scientists there use Macs. I was forced to use one, and I hated every minute of it. I could never adapt to the user interface, which made me feel rather silly since everyone says its so user-friendly. For some reason, I prefer the streamlined interface of windows, where every application is organized by a window that you can easily access in the taskbar. In a Mac the apps either get hidden by the active application or are minimized to that silly launcher that they have. I dunno if it can be configured any other way (I never really tried), but it really bothered me. Made it inconvenient to switch programs. And they wouldnt let me bring in my personal laptop for security reasons, so I had no choice but to use it. Also cant stand itunes. Lost over $400 to that stupid program and never could recover any of my tunes.

I also never liked how Apple products emphasize form over function. Basically they are extremely fashionable and considered a status symbol, so they cost more than an equivalent product that matches up just as well if not better. My 3 year old $600 HP Pavilion laptop has better specs than the current Macs that are priced $700+ more than my laptop. Granted they look gorgeous but I guess I'm just old fashioned in that sense. I live in the SF bay area and around here everyone, and I mean everyone, uses Apple products and they look down upon those who dont. I get quite a few snide comments from them when I say I dont like Apple. Yes, its silicon valley, and yes there are plenty of PC users here too, but I think the overall ratio of mac-to-pc in this area is probably higher than elsewhere.

And dont even get me started on iphones.... *sigh*

funny.. I read an article about "things that suck about america" Apple was listed as one of them. Sure the guy was just trolling.. but, there is some irony.

I actually have a conflict in interest what you said though.. I am a firm believer that the things you have and the care you take of them represent who you are.

On the flipside I'm also utilitarian. I have been raised to always save money, to make investments on how they will increase your quality of life and the merit of it over similar products.

Its ironic that I consider my parents as low class as I do.. they have no appreciation for any finer things in life. They don't understand the appeal of any technology.. Infact they have iphone 4's as a status symbol with almost no apps...

So its not that I don't understand the appeal of technology but, I'll be the first to look at cost. What are the benefits of the more expensive product? am I content with the style of the product I am getting?

Style is important but, note I said style.. not fashion.

If a device has bad style.. then I will be more willing to pay for a better styled device.. however, for what its worth I define style as more.. "is it flat out ugly? am I gunna be embarrassed carrying it around? I mean I'm not into fashion at all.. but, I like to keep some degree of style between my various product.. black ps3 sits nicely besides my black vizio tv. Samsung monitor looks good next to my nzxt hades case and razer mouse ect ect.

fashion by comparison is all about brand name.

EDIT

@exiled.. you sound like me with myh first ipod. "WHY WON'T IT DRAG AND DROP IS THIS THING BROKEN!?!?" after googling it.. "oh... thats stupid..I have to use their program.. why does it sorta work like a flash drive.. but, then not load music?"

I always factor in cost to everything that I do. No one looks at their credit card account more than I do. I could afford spending the extra $300-$500 for my notebook that I got at a huge discount (even though it was new and from Amazon!) :D It's a 17" notebook that really no other 17" that I also compared with can match up. 17" Apple laptops excel in design, battery life, form factor (thinness), screen quality, speakers, materials, and again... design. The only other one that can remotely compete is the HP Envy 17. It falls short immensely on battery life. It's very difficult to find another 17" notebook that meets my expectations.

If anyone can find another 17" laptop that can match up with Apple... let me know!

Apple is like the luxury brand for laptops. HP is probably distant 2nd with their Envy line. All others... very different. Apple = Mercedes Benz of laptops.

My views stems a lot from my parents who are "separated" and one lives in an 8 bedroom house and the other in a 6 bedroom house. Status is very important to them and to my extended family. No one in my extended family owns anything less than an Infiniti (which they view as "My First Car" kind of company) I've always grown up in that kind of environment and just see things differently.

Large companies DO support Linux, just not for end-user desktops. Linux didn't get to running 80% of the world's servers, not to mention countless (thousands) of other devices you didn't even know had an OS on breadcrumbs.

I'm just hoping Canonical continues to do good work, and gets better at it because Ubuntu is the worlds last best hope. Then again Google will be taking a stab at it soon enough.

I used to manage a data network on a U.S. Army base. We had several Federal civilians who desparately wanted to run Linux on the bases secure network. Unfortunately we had to say no to them. The challenge with Linux is that only a select few of the distributions could satisfy Army security requirements. When OS development is community based, it's difficult for some large businesses (and I include the military here) to justify it's use. After all the programmer who wrote that awesome device driver could have easily hidden a key logger or trojan horse in the code.

You know that famous iconic Apple commercial with the hammer-wielding marathon runner who smashes the giant-head-projector, and narrator guy says:

"On January 24th Apple computer will introduce Macintosh, and you'll see why 1984 won't be like 1984."

Well he was right. It turned out to be a Brave New World.

Get it?? ;) .....nudge nudge..... allegorical literary reference....

the xda dev's are putting this in all their OC kernels for the SF as the bootanim.zip
I mean honestly Im not super anti-Apple but you dont at least smile when you see this you're too serious ;)

I worked in the USAF R&D for a bit and they had several labs that ran only Linux. I got to work in one of them :) They obviously went through excessive testing first as they were about 2 builds behind.
