The two files do show up in the download list but won't Install. Says unable to open app.
yes, they are apk and download just fine.What extension are they? It should be an .apk file. Both of them I believe. If not rename them to .apk extension. If you know what I mean..?

Can you install a file manager app like Astro or ES File Manager and try using that to install the .apk files?
For example, with ES File Manager, just navigate to where the file lives (most likely /sdcard/download or /sdcard/downloads) and short-press the .apk file.
From there, it should prompt you to install it.

I'm guessing that downloading and clicking from the download status/notification area won't invoke the package installer like it will from a file browser.
