Orange 2.2 update

Oh yeah I didn't do a wipe when I installed mine. I also only did a backup of the ROM and copied my microSD. I wasn't bothered about losing my settings just my media :)

I did back my texts up, and my contacts where synced to google mail.

Worked fine though so I was happy :D

I have read if you turn it on and update to froyo without the sim and then restart with the sim, you dont need to unlock it?

Hi, There was not a lot to it. I did it like this and it just worked. But it is up to you if you want to take the plunge!
1./ So on this forum i went to "all things root" and followed the link to the Gold Card Tool and downloaded it
2./ Again from the main desire forum page I followed the link and downloaded the Froyo RUU (its on the front page at the moment)
3./ got myself an unlock code off ebay for a Orange UK branded Desire (OK so it cost the best part of 20 quid but I had the code within 5 minutes)
4./ fully formatted a sd card (mine is a Sandisk 16gb) to fat 32 NOT A QUICK FORMAT I will now leave that card in my phone for any future over the air updates

5./ connected my phone to my pc following the instructions that come with the Gold Card Tool, clicked on the link from within the Gold Card Tool program and pasted in the long number the Gold card tool generated.

6./ checked my email and there it was a gold card image, Again with the phone attached to my pc in mass storage mode and again using the Gold Card tool I used the drop down box to find my sd card (still in the phone) clicked to load the gold card image and then patch mmc. Success!

7./ I then removed the sim card and replaced it with a NONE Orange sim,
used the previously bought unlock code when required, turned off my phone and replaced my Orange sim

8./ Started up the Froyo RUU update program previously downloaded and let it find my phone took a deep breath and clicked the program to start the flashing process, 5 minutes later I had a unlocked, stock HTC rom Desire.

For me it was that easy and I am so glad I done it. I do believe (i could be wrong on this ) that the update program will tell you if there is a problem with your phone before it flashes the new rom so it should not brick your phone if the gold card is faulty.
Hope this helps and the steps I took and have mentioned here are totally down to other peoples hard work and to them I thank for giving me what I think is a completely new phone.
 
To just add to what others have said, I was quite worried about debranding... I just followed the instructions here:

I also got an unlock code just in case, but found I didn't need it. I just followed the debranding process and I left my Orange sim out the whole time. Once I was done and had updated to 2.2 (I think the ROM is 1.5 or something, so takes a few updates to get to 2.2, over wi-fi) I popped my Orange sim back in and all is working fine. I thought I might have to re-enter some settings for Orange but they all seem to be there still.

Best (HTC Desire related) thing I've ever done was debranding. It's like a dream now!!

Ill pass it on thanks. He actually rang orange and the guy he spoke to didnt really know what 2.2 was. He told my mate to contact HTC about it. I was sat next to him at the time; I told him that what the at Orange was saying was b******t.

I dont know alot about it as i am on 3 and unbranded
 
i would expect an announcement shortly again stating uncontrollable delays. I will be surprised if we see it this month.
 
There is already another OTA update to fix a few bugs with 2.2 but with the speed Orange is not sorting the main update I would be worried about updating and then having to wait forever whilst they delay the fix.

I would really like to debrand etc but every "easy" guide I read seems to have loads of posts where people encountered errors etc so I worry that I might brick my phone.

Now if I had a spare I would be happy to experiment.

I debranded my orange phone just following the few steps in the first post of this thread http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/148932-froyo-ruu-update-available.html
 
I wonder if the delay was actually HTC's. If I'm giving Orange the benefit of the doubt, which perhaps I shouldn't, maybe HTC wanted to roll the recent update to 2.2 into the release for Orange. So the 2.2 update we get from Orange includes the recent bug fix update.

Seems unlikely though, and Conor's insistence that the delay isn't Orange bloatware's fault is just infuriating... as I said before, if Orange handsets had no bloat in the first place we could have updated with the stock handsets months ago, so it has everything to do with Orange bloat.
 
Gave up waiting and debranded over the weekend and haven't looked back. My internet wasn't working particularly well even where there was a good signal (same sim worked flawlessly in my previous phone in same places). I suspected it was the Orange cr*p messing with the software as other non branded users reported no problems.

I was right-no problems whatsoever since debranding! My suspicion is that problems may STILL exist after the update happens-if ever.

I realise there is a lot of info here on how to debrand but some of it is quite old. I found the link below and decided to follow it as it was recent and all the info was in one place:

"Orange Desire fans – bit of an update on Froyo for you…

HTC told us they've had issues with the update, but these are now resolved. So we're just waiting for them to give finl partner approval

Apols for the delay guys. We've been told to expect it shortly – think days rather than weeks!"

I do find all of this very suspicious. A month or so ago Conor said the update was "on schedule" and should be available within 4 weeks (by the end of August) then said a short while later that it was "on schedule", but then at the end of August he said they hadn't received Froyo from HTC. Now this. Hmmm. Maybe I'm just a sceptic.

My sentiments also. Like I said in my previous post, my internet connection problems have disappeared since debranding. Also, my sim worked flawlessly in my last phone for the internet in the exact same locations-so it's defo not a network problem.

So my problem wasn't network and wasn't purely HTC Desire related. What does that leave? Bl**dy Orange messing with the software that's what!!
 
2.2 gives the ability to install apps to the SD card.
I believe Orange Desire's came with at least a 4gb card
This gives Orange a green light to bloat-load their version of 2.2 as what does it matter? Users can install their apps on the SD card and they can fill up the rest with Orange garbage.

I'd love to root mine but I'm too scared of bricking the thing.

Nope, 2.2 only gives the ability to move apps to the SD Card if the developer has enabled it and also it doesn't move everything, if an app has a sync process then it is best to leave it on the internal memory.

If Orange want to load bloatware then at least give the user the option to remove it if need be.
