Root Please help an idiot...

MnGuy

Newbie
I rooted my Evo through revolutionary but have no idea how to flash a rom or anything. I am running Android Version 2.3.3, baseband 2.15.00.0808 and kernel 2.6.35.10-g13578ee. How do I upgrade to whatever the standard ROM is while still being rooted? I know not to accept any OTA upgrades. Do I need to do anything or just keep things as is. Thanks.

+1 on what urge said. Read the life after root section a few times.

Once you've got a grip on the terms and the process, stop back and we'll help you get either the new updated stock Rom flashed or maybe try out a custom Rom.

I have read that and frankly I still dont know where to start. Is there step by step directions to update to the latest stock? I could follow the directions to root because they were easy to follow.

It's all good. If I were you I would go back to the guide, the Life after root part, and go to the directions for changing recoveries.

Not sure when you rooted, but Revolutionary put Clockwork Mod Recovery on your phone, if you let it. The directions give you the file and directions to change to Amon Ra 2.3 recovery. One most of us find to be more reliable in many ways.

Once you get that on, let us know and someone will help you flash a new rom, either the latest updated stock or an even better one, imho, Mikg3.0.

Let us know if you have any probs, really, it is step by step in the directions, but any probs, someone will be here to help!

Only stupid question is the one you don't ask, so feel free to use and abuse us! :)

edit: Especially Granite, he's like that, you'll see...

thanks everyone for the replies. I tried to follow the instructions for the new recovery. when i try to change the name, the file does from having a yellow folder icon to just being white, and while it's on the root, none of the things that are supposed to happen are happening.
Help?

sounds like you might be extracting the file. it needs to stay zipped up. and make sure that you do not add an extra zip as windows hides extensions. the file needs to be named exactly PC36IMG and it needs to be on the oot of the card.

I didnt extract, I simply downloaded to my desktop and then renamed the file by taking off the everything but PC36IMG. Should it still say zip?

yes it needs to stay zipped. just curious on the icon change from the usual zipped folder icon to something white is not common. are you on a mac or pc?

if you go to folder options and uncheck hide file extensions you will need to have the .zip behind it.

easy way to tell look at any other file does it show a . and 3 letters behind it?

.exe or .img or .jpg?

Go back up to your 2nd reply. There will be a flashing section in that thread. I will sum it up below but the guide is more comprehensive

Basically: your going to want to do a nandroid first. Leave the first 3 boxes check and do wimax as well.

Following the completion of that:

Go into wipe: (your basically going to wipe everything except for SD card)
Do factory reset
Wipe Data
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Wipe Cache
Wipe SD:Android secure
Wipe SD-Ext

Then go back to the main menu and select flash
flash file from Sd
Select superwipe and flash it (optional but recommended, you can get it form the 2nd post in this threads link)
Flash your ROM
Flash your kernel(optional)
Reboot

Here is the latest Sense ROM:
[ROM]STOCK 4.67.651.3 (new ota update)[ROM] - xda-developers

As far as the radio's tell us what you have? after you install the ROM you can just go and update prl and profile to help with some issues.

OK I installed Mik3.0.
I have
Android Version 2.3.3
HTC Sense 2.1
Softare number 4.54.651.1
Kernel 2.6.35.10-g13578ee
hts-kernel@and 18-2#1
baseband 2.15.00.0808
PRI version 2.15_003
PRL version 61083
thanks!

here are the latest radio's if you're interested... if you flash, YRMV, i, myself, have seen an improvement in 3g coverage.....
CM-EVO_Radio-2.15.00.12.19_PRI-2.33_WiMax_NV.zip

thanks ROb. I downloaded that and put in on the root of my sd card (the zip file that said "firmware zip"

I went to recovery and slected it. It said
Install update from sd card
finding update package
opening update package
installing update
E: cant find update script.
Installation aborted.

What did i do wrong?

wait firmware zip? the file for the radios should be named CM-EVO_Radio-2.15.00.12.19_PRI-2.33_WiMax_NV.zip if that is the latest ota update zip, delete that now. you do not need it.

what recovery do you have? have you backed up wimax yet?

Thanks to everyone for your patience and help! I am up and running with a new Rom and radios. I did make a nandroid back up of my old ROM, hopefully I will never have to ask anyone here how to install it!

thanks again, is there a recommended kernel for mikg3.0? I am most concerned with battery life. Also, is installing a kernel as easy as flashing a rom? how do i do it? thanks!

with kernels it is always YRMV. so try a few out and give it a few days as it takes time for the kernel to settle in before moving on to the next one. i would start with trying the aggressive universal freedom kernel and work your way down the aggressive kernel list. then you can try chop suey and golden monkey kernels after that.

and all you have to do is wipe dalvik cache and cache and flash the kernel. always make sure that you do a nandroid backup beforehand.
