If there's little to no cost difference in plan or phone, I would say get the LTE. It's really nice to have, and you'll never want to go back to 3G. Plus if your battery is taking a hit you can always disable the LTE radio when you don't need it.
I'll be buying the phone off-contract. Well actually, it'll be my family's christmas gift to me this year i'm really leaning towards the LTE version now though, especially since I think my carrier will also offer prepaid 4G data plans like what they have for 3G
