Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

I've got a voice message stuck somewhere. I had the carrier disable voicemail, and I think the message was from the carrier anyway. It keeps renewing itself every time you use airplane mode, or reboot the phone with the current date.

You should be able to remove that icon from the notification bar.

What phone is it?
That would do my head in.
Have you tried finding the app that handles voicemail (im guessing its carrier bloat [under the "all" tab]) in app manager and clearing data (android 4.0+)?

Rooted Nexus S. No carrier bloat, but they control VM. I could call VM and listen to the crap, but I hate doing that. First you have to listen to a greeting, then enter PIN.
I'd like to be able to just delete anything without listening to it. Any actual call is in the logs. If the caller is in the phone book, they are identified and I can call back at my leisure. If they are not, I look up the number. Usually it's Rachel or Heather from card services. I am NOT calling back.

I have the mid of Cocaine as a ring tone, and do not have any number of rings set before a call goes to VM. Someone must have been annoyed - I heard about 30 seconds of Cocaine before they hung up. Usually it's only the first few bars.

TMO will NOT let me do a greeting. I want "I don't use VM. Hang up and don't bother"

I never checked the landline answering machine, either.

This is precisely why I use Google voice for VM. Have since it came out. Don't have to listen to it. It is transcribed (poorly) and it has my contacts names on them. I can read/listen/delete/archive from my phone, tablet, or computer.

Last night my daughter and I go in no one at counter, placed order, moved to wait.

Several more people come in and drive through is backing up, got our food 25 minutes later with six people working in burger king????

Lol cant you just dial a number to switch off v-mail?
I use the Hullomail app for visual voicemail instead. The "share with facebook" feature is great if a friend leaves a drunken message :)

Nope, wish I could.

I don't use Google voice. I don't like it. I'm slowly moving email to a different service and leaving Gmail to spam. The problem is - I have GSM. Contacts are on the SIM card, on the phone backup, and I have another backup that keeps ringtones. I've had 3 copies of everything every time I've grabbed an update to CM.

Ignorant petitioners...

Want to know what 25,000 idiots looks like?

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/997/...through-your-email-to-sell-ads/?z00m=20503596

There you go. A petition to "stop Google reading my stuff".

So lets disect this. How does any internet search work? A website is created. It contains particular words in a particular order. This is known as "content". This content is indexed by a "robot" When you search for a phrase in Google, yahoo, bing - it matches your phrase to its index and lists all those sites. Special magic right?

How does email search work? Exactly the same. A robot indexes the content of your emails as they arrive or are sent. This means if you're looking for a particular email using a phrase you know it contains, it can find it. This is the same for all web based email systems with a search function. It is also the same for any computer, phone or tablet with any email client installed. So what exactly is the breach of privacy? Don't use email if you're scared of skynet!

Ok, next. Google is one of the best free services in the world. Also the biggest. Its not free. They need money to fund all the great features these petitioners use. They understand that they say.

Targeted ads are more relevant to people so they earn more money for Google which allows them to invest in your free services. How are they targeted? Well the index that already exists for you to search your mail, is matched against an index of adverts (by a robot) to display relevant adverts. So again, how exactly is this a breach of privacy? No people are reading your emails. Its not malicious. People are not accessible your data (unless you mention a bomb factory then your government swoops in).

What's more, you can opt out of personalised ads.... not that that helps. You still want to search your emails right? So the index remains

Couldnt agree more mate.
Ive got nothing to hide from anyone n im happy for google to know my every move if it helps improve my life in any way.
How can people expect google to do the great work that they do if theyre not earning a profit from it??
Idiots man :banghead:
And if you choose not to have targeted advertising, youl end up getting loads of porn site ad's n crap like that

Should we have to pay to update?
Its in googles interest to keep people using android/play store content/google search ;)

I expect recalls and free safety upgrades for my engine. It is unreasonable to ask for a new, upgraded engine be installed in my vehicle for free.

Even though software is much easier to install, it is still unreasonable to expect the vendor to provide a new, upgraded engine for free.

Lord, I sound like Bill Gates...

Lmao :)
Maybe unreasonable to "expect" but if google wana keep us using android devices.... and they do update thier unlocked nexus' very well.
As for manufacturers.. if they want customer loyalty then its in thier interest to update an unlocked phone during atleast a 2year life span i think (if the hardware can handle it) :)
As for carriers........ meh! Lol

I completely disagree.

My point is that it is not in their best interest to give you free updates forever. To develop an update for a phone costs $$$. At some point, to continue to develop new updates for a phone will cost more than the money they make from selling that model. They need to keep their profit and enough aside to put into development across hardware and software of future models, or they will lose their edge.

I think I have set all this out in the android fragmentation link in my signature.

At one point, Google sat down with the Open Handset Alliance members and called for 18 month update support.

At some point the cord needs to be cut to properly support hardware without being chained to legacies.

Still, the 2.5 year old Evo just recently got a security update - that's excellent customer service, imo.

PS - remember, here in the US, 2 year contracts with heavy lock-in on subsidized phones is the norm, unlike Europe.

Jealousy, if you're gonna use it to motivate your self its one thing, but if you're just going to use it to get mad and have a reason to be upset, just drop it. I admit I get jealous at times, but I don't show it, I don't get mad when someone doesn't comply to my jealous demands.. I don't even make demands based off my jealousy.

Hey, pbf98... um... you something... on your.. face?

Just thought you might want to know.

Right now I am irritated with blog software that doesn't understand that 'private' means don't freakin' publish it.

Lucky for me, my friends know me and the private post wasn't all that revelatory...

Nah i defo think a phone should have a life where its supported officialy for free. Surely thats included in the original price of the phone?

Besides.. i dont see any OEM offering payed for updates for thier devices so whats the alternative? Buy a new phone? Me n my wife are on disability benefits.. were poor :)
