Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

One thing about the old stuff - you had to add the extras. They didn't come with music players, video players, whatever.

Now you have to strip all the crap out to get the OS to behave. I got rid of all extras, including IE in 98SE. I never crashed. No problems with 2K either or XP either. I bought my own security programs. Had to, since I wouldn't use IE.

XP isn't going to die next year - I've seen where MS will continue support for a "chosen few? - schools, etc? - for a bit more.

And if you are a gamer, someone I knew had a set of the old DOS games on 5 1/4" Floppies. Some of those games were damn impressive.

At least Linux lets you get rid of a lot of stuff you don't need or want without a song and dance about it.

What I find sad is that you see Win XP as so terribly obsolete... I have several machines here at work running DOS 6 and Windows 3.1 on 486DX platforms.

You'll often see things like that in industry, PCs that are 15, even 20 years old running some process. Difficulty can be keeping them going. also they might have some specialised software that only works in DOS or Win 3.1, and often requires a parallel or RS232 port, or even an ISA card. And any modern versions are just not available, often because the original company that supplied the systems is out of business.

There's a coin-op pinball table system called Pinball 2000, that uses a Cyrix Media GX PC mainboard. Can't get those now, and the Pinball 2000 system software won't run on anything else. The company that made it (Williams) is no longer in the pinball business.

There was a company that made player piano music until quite recently, and their ancient punch machine required an Apple II or III. Because it was so specialised no other company makes such a machine. Or they could, but it would be extremely expensive for a one off bespoke custom job.

One place I worked at, their Windows 95 PC based CCTV recording system used 100MB Iomega Zip disks for backup and archiving. They had to buy a new CCTV recorder.

Maybe like trying to keep a vintage car running. Ford or GM won't supply you with spares, so you have to rely on your own ingenuity, and hopefully third parties.

Just remembered another example of trying to keep old things going. A good friend of mine in the UK is a piano tuner/technician. There's one brand of piano he just will not touch, and most other tuner/technicians won't touch them either. Basically because spare parts are not available, and due to the way the piano was made one can pretty much guarantee that something will always be broken. So it's pretty much impossible to keep them playing properly. The piano is called a Lindner, sometimes called the "plastic piano", really because the action was made of plastic and not wood. Which is where the problem with them lies. And it wasn't made in China either.

Funny, I have an Iomega Zip drive in the garage... it's the parallel port version and I have something like four or five disks for it, too. I don't think I have anything that it will plug into anymore to see if it still works.

For the children is really getting to me. I've seen ads for ADULT vitamins that look like freaking gummi bears, and I just saw packs of some of the same vitamins for special purposes (energy, relax) mixed in with the candy in the supermarket. Not in childproof containers, either.

And with the all the anti obesity stuff going on, is it a good idea to make medicine look and taste like candy (antacids are getting guilty, too)? What kind of message is that sending?

Seems to me like a safety problem, making medicines candy-like. As far as I understand kids, they're not going to worry about the medical effects, they're going to see "yum, candy!" and go after it, which could get dangerous.

Yes, I know, Special Widdle Precious can't be exposed to the reality that not everything in life is fun and happy and pleasant.

I've got a USB one. You can get adapters for the pin ones to USB.

Part of communication requires that you verify that the recipient actually received the message... my supervisor thinks that merely speaking aloud is sufficient; like we have nothing better to do than waiting with bated breath on his every utterance.

I'll suck it up ...be nice...do stuff I don't want to...etc...because I feel some sort of obligation...don't want to hurt someones feelings.... , can't say no...feel bad...empathetic...misguided abandonment issues...

I really like Tapatalk, but man is it frustrating... I have the versions, offload the older two, and end up having to build my accounts from scratch again.

Nothing against cross dressers. Never occurred to me. I think the national dress should be jeans and t-shirt for everyone. Screw the fashion industry.

Besides which, you can substitute any word for tranny and crashbox.
In other words - you can learn to ignore hurtful people by living with your standards, as there are support groups, or you can seek other help if something really bothers you.

I don't think everyone needs to be labelled and neatly put in a box just to satisfy society and bean counters.

The synchros went in one gear on my Spitfire and I was using that gear crash. Lived with it until I rebuilt the car.

I think you'd end up with some pretty unhappy people: the place my missus works is very dress down (which I would love) but after a couple of weeks she was really ticked off at never being able to wear a skirt or dress or basically anything she thought was cute. She finally decided she would wear whatever she felt like, casual or not, and has been way happier since :D
