Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

I, personally, got tired of the fundraisers... when you have the our four kids in as many schools, the continual fundraising can be a pain.

I convinced the elementary school to take straight donations in lieu of fundraiser. They end up getting more money from me that way.
 
I never bought supplies until school actually started. A lot of teachers seem to start with good intentions to enrich education, but find out they don't have time for it after one month. I recycled the previous year's stuff. If something was proved to be needed later, I would get it.

I never supported the fundraisers. I don't like being pestered, so wouldn't let my kid pester. If she had to contribute $10, I'd give the school the money and told them to call it quits. I never liked the idea of her going door to door trying to sell crap no one wants.
 
That's what we do. I ignore the fundraisers unless they're required for an activity. Then I find out how much each child needs for that activity. I raise that much and done. Usually people are much more inclined to help "susy get her band instrument" than "buy a magazine subscription"

They will vote for the candidate that promises school supply reform and we'll all get a $20 tax to buy etch-a-sketch's for them.

We sold pizzas for the band, sold a lot. So much so that the school decided we didn't need our funds that the school gives to each activity so they gave the band's share to the football team. The school funds + the amount we raised for new uniforms would have been enough for new uniforms so without the school funds we couldn't buy new uniforms.
 
Colorado just turned down a tax increase to "improve" school - like bringing back art class, music, gym. Problem was, the money would be earmarked for administrative decisions for the classroom - maybe buy iPads like that school in CA. I'd rather see the kids get to participate and have some fun along with learning, than "virtual" music or art. Had the money been earmarked for enrichment programs only, it probably would have passed.

Finger painting in first grade was a MUST. Everyone had a ball.

I've still got my recorder flute from 3rd grade.
 
Goddamn, when I was in the final phases of renewing my renter's insurance online, I get a server error. That really pisses me off. If I see any weird activity in my checking account from this, there will be hell to pay.

In my school, when I was in band, I sold cheese to fundraise a trip. Not like swiss cheese, the processed in a jar stuff. Yeah, that was fun. But I sold it, I didn't have to pay a penny for the trip.

Oh, and our band uniform, a kilt. Yup, the Scottish outfit.
 
Hmmm.... what grinds my gears is not knowing the secret to the ancient art of angry steroid ball man by going Super Saiyan 10.5....... when I find the ancient golden secret 2 second old scroll written by 5 year old I will discover SS J technique and then the world will PAY for mocking me.... I will destroy you all.... it is just a matter of time!

People who have money for their beer but want to bum cigarettes all the time, then if/when they have smokes, they want to bum food.. Wth.. Get a life ppl! Just because i can budget my money doesn't mean I can afford to support you too..

The other day, I was behind someone checking out at a grocery store. The checker was having trouble ringing up the guys order. The guy was checking out using SNAP (public assistance/food stamps), one of his items (pistachio nuts) was not coded correctly, so it appeared that he had to pay $3.59 in cash. It was taking forever for the checker to figure out the error. While we were waiting, I saw that he had made purchase of crab legs at a cost of $23. The guy didn't appear destitute in any way, dressed nice, wearing a clean pair of boots.

I'm thinking, "really, RabidWife and I work hard just to make ends meet. We can't afford to eat crab legs."

Crazy thing is that RabidWife was counting our cash to help the guy out, she didn't notice the crab legs.

Just curious as to how someone on food stamps is supposed to dress? Im a single dad, work full time and still need help, but I have to dress nice for work too. Although i wouldn't be buying crab legs either, but he may have been getting them for someone else. At least its food, ive seen others' buying monster energy drinks with their ebt..

I'm in the same boat, or was until recently. Dress nice because I like to with clothes gotten from Salvo. Three kids. Husband left. Used food stamps to get me thru. Occasionally "splurged" even, saving up stamps for a treat every once in a while. Yes, some people scam the system. I hate that they do that, giving the rest of us a bad name.
 
Hey, as a Dutchie I am not familiar with the american system for support. Is anyone willing to explain how this works, with food stamps?

The government used to give out vouchers that could be used like cash for food for folks that needed it. This is where the term "food stamps" comes from. Nowadays most states issue a debit card and recharge it monthly. There is a constant battle between verifying people use the money appropriately (e.g. food & necessities vs. cigarettes & lottery tickets) and stigmatizing the users (hence the discretion of issuing a debit card as opposed to stamps).
 
Yeah, people on benefit/support here receive money in their bank account. No way of telling where the money comes from in a store, who's receiving.
Foodstamps... we had those in/after World War 2 when the food production was tight. That left a bad aftertaste here for those stamps, and the stigmatization.
 
I think it varies by state as well. In my state there are restrictions on where the debit card can be used and for what. If I had cereal and bread and shampoo, the card would automatically pick up the food, and the balance left would be for the shampoo
 
Wth?? And who's to decide where one can spend the money on? That is bringing grown ups to their knees... Dang... :o

Some of these 'grown-ups' are little more than old children. They rely on the government to support them because their own parents will not or can not continue to do so.

In the eyes of the government, that means they can dictate the terms of the support.

Unfortunately, the government also thinks it is responsible for the welfare of all its citizens, not just those on the dole, and it feels it must protect them from themselves.

What many of us need, however, is protection from the government.
