Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

I'm a blue-collar working man. My clothing consists of blue or black jeans, t-shirts and sweatshirts.

My wife insists on putting me into Polo-style shirts on occasion.

I know nothing of this 'fashion' you people speak of.

I buy $35 'Kane' steel-toed boots from Walmart every six months or so for work, and my other shoes are whatever my wife buys for me at the outlet store.

Most of mine are too, but polos last a long time. Ive had the same dress shirt and khakis for about 7 years and a pair of polo jeans for over 10. Granted i dont wear them often, usually for job interviews or when needed, but thats saved me quite a bit of money over the years. And as a single dad, i need to save as much as i can. I do maintenance and for the most part its Dickies jeans, tshirts, socks, etc, or the cheap fruit of the loom t-shirts. Im a big guy so finding my size in thrift stores is almost nil, lol, but i did happen to find a pair of Timberland shoes for $10.

I find polos last ages as well. I stocked up on them during the summer. Bought a job lot of Ralph Lauren ones in Shenzhen, only thing is the tags were cut off but doesn't matter, so probably seconds or excess production from the factory. That often happens with apparel production anyway. I see all sorts of brands here in Xilinhot, like famous department stores and brands from around the world, Zara, Burton, Debenhams, Brooks Brothers, etc. I bought myself a couple of pairs of Lee jeans recently, couldn't see anything wrong with them for equivalent of $10 each.

:ditto:

I'm basically a stand-in for my missus' childhood dolls - she claims she doesn't trust my sense of fashion, but that's so obviously a feeble excuse: like all men my age, I am a fashion icon.

Or at least, I'm sure I would be if I dressed myself.

You can find store brand jeans for as low as $7 brand new. I've had some last for over 7 years or longer. The longest lasting ones are patch upon patch.

Shirts are custom made by me. Slightly more expensive, but the designs, colors, styles and logos are mine, I've pretreated the fabric, and the shirts, sweatshirts, dress shirts for the Vulcan will last 20 years or more. Won't fall apart in the first wash or shrink.

I've had custom made shirts and a couple of tailor made jackets from Hong Kong, Which is probably one of the best places in the world to get this sort of thing done, have pretty much anything you like made for a reasonable price, if you can get to HK that is. :) ...can get it done in the UK, but horribly expensive, e.g. Savile Row, London.

As for fashion knock off, I don't really care what the original is so why do I want the knock-off? I suppose if I really did want it, clothes-wise, I could duplicate it for myself, only. I have pattern drafting software.

You haven't seen much of the brand whore mentality of Asia have you? If you can't afford the real thing, you make do with knock-off, that's how it works. One reason why there's so many KIRF iPhones around, as well as all the knock-off Gucci, Prada, LV, Rolex, etc.

Brands are ridiculous

True religion jeans=$180-300 a pair! :what:

Here you go, Evisu, $400 jeans...
th

Isn't cotton supposed to be one of the cheapest fabrics as well?

I hit up the sale racks at Ross. I buy some name brand shoes but only due to them being speciality. I always have feet pain...

What grinds my gears is finding a perfect shoe, then not finding my size!

... and the interesting thing is-- she says she loved my style of dress when we first met, which at the time was Florida beach bum: t-shirt with a button-up shirt half-done over it. I haven't worn a button-up shirt (outside of my work uniform) in years.

When I was in Singapore, I tore my favourite shirt so the gf at the time simply took it to Far East Plaza and had 3 or 4 copies run up for me - at about $20 a piece - around a third what I paid for the original :D

And when I was in Thailand for a few days last year for a friend's wedding, I had couple of bespoke (made-to-measure) suits made, complete with spare pants, for around $300 the lot.

Hang on - this is Grind Your Gears .. err .. REALLY annoyed I didn't get a 3rd one .. grrr

Some knock-off we get here is classic iMO. Like my warm fleece lined CK Calvin Klein sweater...

Apparel knock-off seems to be a bit different to tech knock-off. KIRF tech product makers prefer to stay very anonymous, not so with clothing apparently. Infringe whatever trademarks and copyrights, and put your full company name, address and phone numbers on the tags.

First off NO OFFENSE to Handicapped people or Old people like my self But every morning when i'm on the bus it picks up this older man who rides a Rascal ...... every morning it takes him about 5 minutes to back it up on the bus and in his spot but the poor man can't manuever the darn thing.... I really think they need a riding class on how to back those up on the bus. The other day it took him so long to get on that the bus driver told him to just sit still and she manuevered him into his spot .

I'm pretty sure that ENGL 125 is a pre-requisite for ENGL 15A. If not, it should be-- When you submit a story for critique, you should have at least made an attempt at proper punctuation and spelling.

I mean, good Lord, if I did this edit on paper, the entire eleven pages would look like a freakin' crime-scene.

As it is, the change bars are nearly continuous from stem to stern on every page.

Sounds like we're in the same boat when it comes to clothes. For the most part, it sucks trying to find something decent in larger sizes.

I wish I had that kind of talent. My mom did, but was never able to teach me. She said you either have it or you don't. And I don't lol

Even learning to sew a straight seam helps. Lots of times you can find bargains where a seam is ripped out, but it's mostly straight stitching and zigzagging to fix it. Especially with kids' clothes. You just have to know the difference between ripped and ravelled. This goes for menswear. I've seen a decent sale on pants that had an easily fixed ripped pocket.

I've found furniture bargains where all the piece needed was some good glue.
Another piece needed a metal brace, and for some reason the Vulcan had a mess of the stock they put up traffic signs with. We used that for the brace.

He also grabbed a bunch of obsolete traffic light controllers that his company was throwing out. Those did our sprinkler system for years.

I still think jeans, sweatshirts, and Tshirts should be the national dress.
Dressing up always itched when I was a kid.

That used to go for womenswear, too. Daughter is slightly outsize and all the outlets that carried her size had nothing a teenage girl would want to wear. Stuff was dowdier than outdated clothes from a grandmother's closet. That's another reason I sew. I can adjust a pattern.

I can sympathize - you either get flash fashion that doesn't suit you or stuff that belongs to the last century.

I go through the clearance racks when it's off season...it is easier when you are not the "average" size...but it still takes a good eye and patience..I buy a lot of summer stuff in the winter and winter stuff in the summer...quality never goes out of style:)

ps
those $200+ dollar jeans? ...I'm wearing them right now!!...only I paid 50 tops.. and I guarantee they last years longer than the 20 dollar jeans that fall apart dont look very good and dont ever fit quite right...:)

I have done the majority of my sewing. It isn't that difficult, and if an old guy like me can do it, you should be able to get the hang of it, too. ;)

I pierced my finger pretty badly with the needle on the sewing machine I was forced to use in home economics...(or skills for living as they pc call it today)in middle school...even with the safety thingy on...

i have post traumatic stress from it!!!!

I will never sew again!!! NEVER!!!!:D I say!!!

or iron.... long story.....:)

My wife neither sews or irons anything.

That's what I'm there for. ;)

On another note, I can barely lift my arms over my head. I worked my butt off today, I'm really sore!

no matter how long you have been together....here is a little heads up!!!..

( and you're welcome):):D

.go get a button up...and t shirt...

a little florida beach bum...goes a long way... if you get my drift....;)

Exactly.. Thats why i went with Dickies. Jeans are $25 and t-shirts are around $10, but they last quite a while. Im in my 40's so im not as concerned about style as i used to be lol.

I paid $20 for my polo jeans, originally $105... Why i hit dillards too, you cant beat 75% off..
Used to buy the levis 560's but at $60 and they only lasted a year at most, it just isn't worth it.

I got myself a couple of months ago with a high speed machine. It needed stitches. Also got myself with a wide special needle which didn't.

I got kicked out of home ec. They made stuff I didn't like, and they cooked stuff I didn't like either. I just got mad enough at not being able to find what I wanted, when I wanted it, that I started sewing.

I took Cooking for my Home Ec Class, and you know it's bad when you are the only guy in the class ( yes i took it for the girls )and the Teacher tells them that I cook better than all the girls in the class......... i feel sorry for the Men they married

Maybe they all took the class because they knew they couldn't cook and were hoping to find a guy that signed up looking for woman that could cook.:p
