Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

I might have mentioned this one before.... That awful default plopping sound that Samsung phones always make, and nobody ever seems to change or silence it.

Ugh I hate it. Can't Samsung leave it like defaults. I like the KitKat / JellyBean / Froyo sounds better. I'd take froyo any day over Samsung TW.

Apple is annoying me big time lately. In 1999 I was able to edit spreadsheets and other 'office' type documents on a PDA/handheld/mobile device. Then came the iphone and it took over the market so everyone else went the entertainment device direction and now 15 years later I can just barely do anything production with mobile devices because all the companies call about is apps that can share what song your listening to or pictures of pets.

Not all the companies..Kingsoft of Zhuhai has been doing mobile productivity software for a long time, and still does.

No cloud, no pets, no social, no songs....just office productivity.

IMO Google ruined QuickOffice, because that now has to be on-line and connected to Google Drive to function.

Google's story is indeed that the Chinese government were making unacceptable demands of Google around blocking of content and (I believe) reporting of search histories (somewhat ironic in light of recent revelations) in order to license them to operate in China.

Cynics claim it was more to do with the fact that Google wasn't making much money there. I believe the compromise was that Google would operate in HK, so still in China, just in a special bit of China that's a tad more liberal.

As for MS and Apple laughing all the way to the bank, I think their Chinese suppliers and business 'partners'* are probably laughing louder

* China forces foreign companies in China to operate via majority Chinese-owned JVs and to gift their IP to these 'partners'

Yeah I think this is a more accurate description of the problem. Interestingly, most Chinese consumers seem to be using "cracked" MS software, they say that MS leave them alone because if they started to charge the sort of costs that everyone else pays, the consumers would shift to other software.
As for Apple, the iPhone has some real status value here, although Samsung are making some serious inroads into the market, very important to the locals, and of course, in the case of the iPhone, no problems with "strangling".
Another bitch I have is the unavailability of apps. on playstore, not just in China but many countries, Just bought a N7 and it is virtually redundant because so few of the good apps. are available. i.e. games, movies, TV, even Google Bookreader is unavailable. Really tired of the message: "This is not available in your country".
That really grinds my gears!

You can still get quickoffice app for android, mike

I know there's the app wynd, but I've found ever since the Google version was released it won't start without an internet connection. If the device is off-line it doesn't do anything, rather like a Chromebook IMO. I used to use QuickOffice when it was the paid version.

Google can grind my gears as well. I know where Google has no problem with the PRC....Ads!! ....AdSense, DoubleClick and AdMob, all available no problem at all.....because that means $$$$$

IMO a Nexus is probably not the best Android to be using in China....I did think of that last summer when I was buying a new phone....and leave the Chromebook at home. ;) The Samsungs sold in China are quite Googleless of course, as are just about all Androids here.

Look familiar?

I believe both are MSOffice file support only. OpenDocument seems to be working fine and I'm hoping AndrOpenOffice will take off.
I was finally able to read my load data spreadsheet instead of printing it out before when I was looking at the powder shelves at Cabelas the other day.

hmm, I've had bad back pain for the last couple days too, did you send something my way.

My lower right back pain is driving me insane.

I cannot bend down without a lot of pain. :(

There is a little bit of a lump on my lower right near the pelvis and spine.

I had had enough and wanted to get an appointment with a doctor but they are all fleeing like cockroaches when you turn on the light. :D

It is the festive season so I now need to wait till next year about 6 January they said.

:/

It is right where this lump is and.... it is pretty painful. :(

Back pain and strange lumps with slightly dark colour to them grind my gears.

Better than being a wheel chair though. ;)

Could be paralyzed - now that is something very scary never mind serious pain when you band down - because you can't even bend down! :(

Shame those poor paralyzed guys - I feel for you!

47 Fake Products That Are Better Than Microsoft's Sad Anti-Google Swag

Sadly, I am beginning to think you are right, great hardware but absolutely ordinary without software support and I don't think it is only China, have noticed same sort of complaints from other forum members living in far off lands. I guess we have to conclude that we just don't matter:mad:

What really put me off getting a Nexus phone is that's it's only 16GB non-expandable, i.e. no SD. By the time I install the apps I need, plus the data they use, pictures, etc. it doesn't leave much room for anything else like music and videos. Google Music is not available in China of course. Was looking at getting an Oppo Find last week, quite a nice phone, manufacturer endorses the use of community ROMs as well, like CyanogenMod. However only 16GB non-expandable, 10GB usable. The iPhone is available upto 64GB, however we pay one hell of a premium for that in China, over $1,000 USD. I'm sure the 5S is the most expensive regular cellphone that's on sale in China, outside of uber-luxury things like the Vertu and Goldvish.

To be fair to Google though, the unavailability of music, movies, books, magazines in many countries. It's down to what the rights holders impose, i.e. Hollywood, MPAA, RIAA, record labels, book publishers, etc. We can't buy music, TV shows and movies from Apple iTunes in China either. If you want legal music, you have to go to Baidu instead, although it is free and has a very good selection of English language music, in addition to all the Mandopop. :D

My 16G is full of updates to apps I never will use like Google+, Slacker Radio, NFL something or other, Google Chrome, etc. By the time all the forced upon me apps are updated I don't have any space for apps I want. All those and Google maps I have to uninstall all the updates and remember to not update them or I run out of space. So now I can't just look through the list and update all I have to update apps one at a time wasting my time.
And this is with an removable SD card, the forced apps fill up the app space.

It's a Verizon phone yeh? Think that's one of the prices you have to pay for having it subsidised, i.e. carrier bloatware that you never use and can't remove unless you root. The Google stuff is well part of Google's services, nothing to do with the carrier AFAIK.

BTW I bought a non-carrier phone and paid full price for it, so had non of that nonsense. Although carrier subsidised phones are not available here anyway. I use a 32GB SD for music, documents, photos, videos and map data(China is 2.3GB). All the apps I use are on the 16GB internal storage, which is enough my uses, at the moment.

Unfortunatly Verizon is the only carrier that can get a signal anywhere near my farm land despite it not being in their coverage area. AS&S, Sprint, etc can't even get a signal outside of the nearest town. So I found that if I uninstall all the updates to the garbage both Verizon and Google push out then I can install useable apps. But then I have to be careful to not accidentally try to update or I run out of space. And I have to keep not updating maps so I don't loose the zoom buttons.

How can you owe $111 for one month for one phone with Cricket? Their highest plan is $70/month for unlimited talk/text/10 GB fast data. (I'm on the $60/5 GB plan, debating paying the extra $10 for double the data). Plus you can knock an extra $5/month off of those prices by signing up for auto bill pay.
