Of course the store is going to try to dissuade you from claiming an expensive warranty repair, but if you have a case, then maybe you need to push it.
If the store manager won't help you, then maybe his boss will.
With that said, when Dngrswife broke the screen on her very new HP laptop, I spent just a little more for an identical refurb than the cost of a replacement panel and waited about a year or so for the price of replacement screens to come down to a reasonable price, and had myself a second machine to use (and spare parts).
