Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

I do use Ubuntu on the desktop. As an OS - it works well, but if you have a problem, watch out. Most of the answers in a search seem to be dated pre 2010 which doesn't help with the newer distros.

Took me forever to find out that the Canon Lido scanner just doesn't work with Ubuntu. I bought an Epson scanner only and it worked out of the box.

(I won't use an all in one)

PS - there are some serious fanboys on the open side. I've seen vicious arguments over Gimp and Photoshop.

This.

But hey, pm me if you need distro help! Been using Linux for nearly a decade now.

It's not that I hate one company vs the next (Except Apple these days,) It's just that Windows for me is too much of a resource hog, and I didn't like the windows 8 UI. My computer doesn't have the best stats in the world, and linux just works.

Also my rant for the day:

Mornings suck.

Im in the same boat. Computer isn't anything special and linux is more fun. I wasn't talking about any one here, just some facebook clowns. I hate how I can see things that are Not from my friends group. Grr...

What grinds my gears? Well to say what we down here call "hood rats" which is black wannabe gangsters that thinks it's just so cool to wear pants/shorts below your a$$, attempting to rap when in reality they just sound like a complete imbusil. :)

And now you may think I'm a racist for "bashing" on the black man you say?

No I've got many black friends, these kind of people just give the hard working black men a bad name. :)

In my area, we have "hood rats" of all skin colors, and they're all idiots, IMO.

I am just begining my experience with linux, and I am really enjoying it. I have a lot of learning to do though. Just installed Ubuntu on a partition of my windows machine, played with partition magic a bit, but need to figure out how to get some stuff I liked on windows working.
If anyone has a suggestion for a good method for learning the basics, I'd be grateful.

"Grinds my gears" rant for this morning:

All I know is WINE ain't all it's cracked up to be. There is a web page for WINE that lists which Windows programs work best with it.

WordPerfect 9 sure didn't. But Abiword works more like WP, so it was acceptable.

I found out reading forums helps. Most of the books just tell you how to download pictures, read your email, etc, and the other ones seem to be written for total geeks who have used terminal commands from the cradle.

Prinny kindly recommended Distrowatch.com. I've been looking at it - seems like quite a bit of information.

I'll add to your rant. Found an article about the upcoming 12.10. All the damn article seems to do is point out the amazing desktop, animation, and other visual goodies.
There were a few notes about bugs and problems, buried way down at the end of the page! I am not interested in the GUI, nor ONE (Google like site) nor automatically linking with social sites. I want to know how easy it will be to work with certain programs, fix a slow printer, etc. I sympathize, totally

I think that is what many people want. They want to ride on the train and care not one bit about the engine.

The train can be gussied up to look like a new bullet train, but underneath it's still a steam locomotive.

People look at the pretties and then either rant or whine that their phone doesn't do what your phone does, or no one said that a service that was a selling point needed to be paid for.

There are a few that just need something that "works" but a lot of them also make sure it "works" the way they want it to.

If you have a couple of kids and you also work - you need to schedule appointments, lessons, the kids' games if they do sports, shop, run your house. supervise said kids - you do need something that just works for you. You don't have time to finagle or care about how it works. So I do agree from that viewpoint.

I keep my schedule in a day planner. Paper, not a DL. We should choose the technology that works best for us.

I recall meeting a friend out of state. She wanted my address. She sat down, opened her laptop, fired up some program and entered the info.

I pulled out my little Moleskin and jotted her address down. She had to close the program and shut down her laptop.

Ubuntu grinds my gears. I've moved on to arch based distributions and couldn't be happier with that. It just. Works. Granted i can't vouch for printers and other peripheral devices, as I own none.

Barbarian...

:D:p

Naw . . . my Moleskin is the display device connected to a marvel of mechanical majesty and controlled by a CPU that no computer can match. The display can be in color or black and white and operates at high resolution. And no glare in the bright daylight.

It is all rather high tech.

In your case the CPU has a few burnt transistors!:p;)

What really gets me is people speeding in construction zones. Seriously, driving 70-80mph for the 3 miles in the Work Zone won't save you but a few seconds on your trip.

Watching a highway worker die because someone had to have a starbucks latte before work is a tragedy.

Everyone is in such a hurry to go nowhere.

I live in an area where apparently people driving in the fast lane go 60-65.

The speed limit is 65, i would suggest at least going 70-75

I mean i understand there is a lot of traffic in the mornings, but still, hitting my breaks every couple seconds because some guy in the front of the car congo line is going 60 when we could all be going 70 irritates me...

This gets me too! In Texas the law reads "left lane passing only" which most people read "fill the left lane and go as slow as you possibly can"!!!!!!

10 miles over the speed limit might be OK until the city, county, whoever decide they need $ and start ticketing for a couple of miles over.

Some roads here - the right lane is full of potholes and broken pavement.

I never tell anyone to speed, just don't slug along in the fast lane if you're intending to drive slower than everyone else.

Doesn't matter how fast you are going, if you're slower than the flow of traffic, get out of the fast (Passing) lane.

If there are potholes on the right, Keep up with traffic until you can move over!
