Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

so when you go into the bootloader and select recovery then you press and hold power+vol up and vol down, what happens? do you get into the stock recovery menu?
At the bottom in yellow, it says "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command"
At the top in blue it says "Android system revocery <3e>" with 4 options below.
Reboot system now
Apply update from sdcard
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition

Hey guys, some of you might remember me, I had messed up my evo 4g by flashing the wrong rom. Anyways, I got my phone replaced and I am trying to root it. I didn't a factory reset and formatted everything. I am doing the tacoroot, and everything seems to go well until step 9. At the end of the output in the command line it says this:

[HIGH]rm failed for /data/data/recovery/log, Permission denied
link failed File exists
[/HIGH]

it does go into recovery and then I push the volume +, -, and power buttons and reboot it like it says to do. then in step 10 it says:

[HIGH]Rebooting into root.
/data/local/tacoroot.sh: cannot create /data/local.prop: permission denied
[/HIGH]

it reboots again but it doesn't not go into bootloop like it did last time I did this. Anybody ever see something like this before? Am I doing something wrong?

you need to be in the stock recovery first before you can enter the taco root commands. are you sure you did that before proceeding?

if you mean I need to go into recovery once before starting all that, then yes I did do that. But if you mean I need to be currently in recovery while doing any commands then I no. But I didn't because in the command prompt it actually said I needed to hit the volume up, down, and power buttons and then choose the first option to reboot (the command from step 9 says that). I even tried to run the step 10 command while still in recovery and it said the device could not be found or it was disconnected (one of those).

yeah like 10 post back another member had the same issue as yours. i have never come across this before, other then you two and i have not found the reason why or how to fix it.

two questions: are you unlocked? what is your hboot and radio?

oh great, they have found out how to stop us from rooting huh?

it says "locked (oow)"

hboot- 2.18.0001
radio-2.15.00.01.15

its not that taco root is a bit touchy lately, not really sure why. what size card are you using? do you have enough room on it?

the issue is that it seems(at least to me) that the recovery log is not getting saved on the card so that when taco root tries to use it, it can't find it.....at least that is my assumption.

you might need to use the catptn's method

I'm using a 8gb card. Alright, I can try doing the captain throwback, but real quick what does the "s-on, s-off" even really mean? Because if I'm reading it right tacoroot is the only way I can get s-off.

nope captn method will get you s-off as well.

for some phones there is a huge difference between having s-off vs unlocked and s-on. however, the og evo is lucky enough to really not have too much of a difference.

for the og evo the main difference will be using PC36IMG files. you will need to relock the bootloader in order to use them. PC36IMG files are generic file names that can be used for recovery, RUU's, bootanimations and splashscreens. so basically, you can't update your radios, or flash a recovery with s-on. there are other methods however to get recovery with s-on.

sorry I didn't get back to you last night, fell asleep. Okay awesome, well then later this evening I will do the captn method and I'll let you know if I have any problems (do you want me to let you know if it was successful for the other guy having the same issue?). Thank you for your help. This place sure is one of the nicest and most helpful forums I have ever been on.

It seems that the last ota locked the misc part and tacoroot no longer works. I just tried this on an evo with the newest ota and it can not erase the misc part said same permission denied every time:(.

I used the Revolutionary method to root and these have all been a mystery to me.

There is another method though, right? Have you tried it or is that closed down to us too?

you know i thought about that as well as the reason why some can't get taco root to work.....it is definitely a possibility.

ummmmm have you not read the guide? as far as i know the latest ota still works with HTCdev, captn's method should still work, and as far as i know taco root should work........though the above statement is a possibility.....just can't verify it.

Ok just finished with htc dev and capt's method works!!!
what i do after this is (dont shoot me) take an ota to hboot 2.16 than use revolutionary because i dont like unrevolked and revolutionary seems so much easier:D
