Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

I'll keep that in mind for future endeavors. Rooting and then flashing the G SIII was so much easier than this phone. Also, thanks so much for keeping this thread up-to-date. It's been years. Your dedication and support is greatly appreciated.

well you can thanx HTC for that....LOL. you should see how to root my phone (evo 4g LTE)....that is a huge pain....you need to use ubuntu in order to root it:mad:

anyways....no worries....i'm just paying it forward as there were others like me here that helped me when i was a noob.....so what goes around, comes around...LOL

Hey guys, sorry it took me so long to post, been running around working. I never got the HTCdev stuff to work but it's not a worry right now because my clumsy butt dropped my phone and cracked the screen pretty bad (the one time I don't have the otterbox on it). So I am going to either get it replace (i have insurance on it) or just get a whole new phone because I might be able to get an upgrade at this point. I'll be back here if I get it replaced and will be attempting the rooting process again. If I get a new phone I'm sure you will see me in that phones part of these forums.

ah man....sorry to hear that:(

well....keep us posted;)

That will work just fine:) You can always change it later.

The Amon recovery will work fine, but the better choice recently would be Smelkus.

You can find either one at the link below under recoveries.

Thanks guys I ended up using Smelkus'.

Edit: Thanks for everybody's help and guidance and thanks to all of the developers out there. Got S-off

Okay, I think am doing everything correctly, but when I get to Step 12 "flash unlocktoken" etc... It just says "sending unlocktoken <0K>..." and hangs there. My phone doesn't show the "unlock bootloader?" screen it shows, it is still in the fastboot menu.
I have tried this several times, updated the phone software, etc.. but still can't figure out what the problem is. I am running Windows 7 64bit. I have installed HTC Sync. I don't know if there is some "understood" part of these directions that I am missing? I am following them step by step. I have waited more than 10-15 min. If I pull the battery on the phone or unplug the phone from the computer, I get this message in the command window: "FAILED <status read <<failed too many links>>"
Help? (I am going to read back through this thread, but at 60 pages, I think it will take a while to see if anyone else had the same problem.)
Thanks!
Karen
EDIT- I figured it out! I had the USB plugged in through a usb hub. Happened to think about trying it plugged in directly and that was the key! Worked like a charm.

Hey guys! I'm back (guy that cracked his screen while trying to root). Bestbuy drug their feet getting me a replacement but I finally got it. I decided I wanted to try and root it before I post here and it work without one problem. I did some thinking trying to figure out why my last phone had so many problems when this one didn't at all. Well if you remember the one I cracked the screen on was a replacement for the one I flashed the wrong rom and almost bricked it. When I got that phone the bestbuy worker went ahead and updated everything in it and when I got this newest one I didn't update a thing and had no problems rooting it. So I guess there is something different with the newest update for the Evo 4G. Well I just thought I would put my thoughts out there, not sure if it was helpful or not. All I know is I have a working, rooted phone.

Good job Jacob. Now take it slow. Read. Ask questions, measure twice and cut once.

You have lots of freedom now and also the ability to turn it into a brick. Lol.

Lots of folk here to help so take advantage of it. :p

Thank You! I actually had a rooted Evo for almost a year then found a rom I thought was made for evo 4g but it was for the 4g lte and flashed it and it messed it up pretty bad. I have learned my lesson from that. I'm trying to get a working swap right now.

Hi, I am new to this forum and just wanted to say thanks for this thread. I have a 3 year old EVO, I have always liked the phone but lately the bloatware and the RAM hog that is Sense finally drove me to look for a root and a ROM. This step by step tutorial was extremely helpful, I have hboot 2.18 and rooted via HTCdev and flashed Cyanogenmod, I am now happy with my phone again! I was planning on getting a new phone but even a low tech person like me could stave off this expense thanks to your help. WOO HOO!!

Welcome to the forums scott!
SWEET!!! You got root!!
And glad that Ocn's guide could help out!
Oh the fun fun world of rooting awaits you now:D

Just ask if you have any questions o.k. ? :)

I'm trying to flash the su file. I'm having a problem booting the recovery. I've unzipped the su file on the root of the SD card.
When I select "Recovery" from the HBOOT menu and press the power button, the phone reboots and eventually displays a picture of a phone and a red triangle.
