Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

it seems like the more i read about chainsdd...the dev...atleast as far as androidsu.com it doesn't appear as if he's done anymore work with this app/zip/etc...for a couple years. what's up with that? Did they quit working on it or am I just reading an unused website?

I would stick with the version of su listed for staying on stock.
As far as ChainsDD development...not sure, sorry, but most if not all custom roms have the SuperUser included in them.
I wouldn't think you would have any issues with the SU that is included in the rom.
I'm not that well versed in the whole "update binary" thing to tell you what exactly that means :o

By the way, you should be able to post links now....on your first post, you weren't able to;) But now you can. :)

yeah to be honest i would not worry about su as long as it gives you root permission.......all is good.

and why flash su and stay on stock, when there are so many better roms out there? htc and sprint did a horrible injustice in designing the stock rom.

mikg is sooooooo much better then stock......it is what they should have released.

plus i'm not a big fan of sense......pure android (aosp roms) is the way to go in my opinion......but that is up to you.

Yeah I've been reading up on ocn and capn and i'm getting an idea they have a pretty good grasp on what's going on. one of the reasons why i decided to be active in this forum as compared to the many i've just browsed. was hoping to get some clear answers.
ok when you say, "i would not worry about su as long as it gives me root permissions"=meaning once flashed if theres no problems why worry about something that's not broke yet? well messing with computers for so long i always try to think a couple steps ahead and see if i'm heading in the right direction or worse, off the fing cliff, before making any moves or action. it's easier to back track if you didn't track at all. I guess.
I'm gonna try out this mikg rom...once i get done blabbing. So I went back to the instructions and read about flashing the rom, which mike stony said that most roms have the su code already cooked in it...so i wont even mess with flashing it i guess or should i flash it just to make sure all is good?
oh and my other ? was about the superwipe .zip is that pretty much the same thing that htcdev's site talks about wiping out the cache and temp files after flashing the rom so it wont potentially get stuck in a boot loop? Is it basically a batch or script or whatever that does that for us?

well i can't speak for the good captain as he is in another league then me when it comes to this stuff. if anything i learned a great deal from him.....LOL

correct about why worry about it.......the su file in the guide should be enough.......if anything updating the binaries (which can be done within the app) would help.

but there is just no need if you plan on trying mikg to be honest.

and superwipe should be used in conjunction to wiping manually. it should never be used to do the wiping alone. you need to wipe dalvik cache, cache and system. cache is temp files anyways so i guess you can say yes as to what superwipe does.......but do not rely on it alone.....follow the steps in the guide and you will be fine.

i think i answer all of your questions in your post.....if not then keep en coming;)

Update: wiping the caches did not work, we went with the nandroid vs waiting for her to get me the phone so can try to flash the update file.
Worked like a charm, I gotta teach her to make nandroids more often or maybe I should at least install titanium on her phone.

it is the market which i believe should automatically change to play store.

if not then you can find the play store apk by googling it and use a file manager to install it.

So I took the jump to decks reloaded!
Now how do I get a2sd working? Is it a separate zip I need to flash? I have terminal emulater and the a2sd commands aren't working.
Also the market isn't updating to play store.

Forgive me for not reading back for more info, but is your sd card partitioned?
What commands are you using?
Let me see if I can find the DarkTremors command list a sec...:)

As far as the Market not updating, it should happen soon once you log in and set up your google account.

I did put the account in and still didn't update, I installed the apk but now it's still not letting me download apps.
Same SD card as I had running MikeG with partition and a2sd.

Is there a way to check if the SD-ext is being mounted?

yes, in the output from the Term. Emulator when running the command. (remember to type "su" then enter, then the "a2sd check" command. without the quotations marks)
It should look something like this:

[ ] Apps2SD is launching...
__ _____
| \ |
| | |
|__/ | Darktremor Apps2SD 2.7.5.2 (2010-09-30)
[ ] GetProp Command = /system/bin/toolbox getprop
[ ] SetProp Command = /system/bin/toolbox setprop
[ ] Mount Point = /system/sd
[ ] Creating /cache/dc
[ ] Symlinking /cache/dalvik-cache to /data/dalvik-cache
[ ] Starting Apps2SD Check Program.
[ ] Checking for ext partition
[X] Ext partition found, but not mounted.
Your rom may not be setup to run Apps2SD.
Check with your rom developer if the boot image
is programmed to run Apps2SD.
Your partition may be using an EXT4 partition,
but your rom may not support EXT4. Repartition
your SD card to use EXT2 or EXT3.
