Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

Ok. Do I do the 3.11 Full Wipe or 3.11Update? After I do this will I then be able to do the ICS rom?

well you do not have to flash mikg3.11. i did not know you were interested in ics roms. you can just flash those if you like. all custom roms will have su cooked in.

so...........pick an ics rom of your choice and go and get your flash on:D

do not forget to make a nandroid backup first though.

How do you do that nandroid backup? and do you have a recommendation for a good ICS? I see so many out there and am super confused.

ok best thing to do is read this guide:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

it has a ton of info including how to make a nandroid backup and how to flash a rom. just go to the after rooting section to get the info.

and i have not tried an ics rom for a long time now so i really cant suggest any at this point. but i know that deck's was a pretty good one. just keep in mind most are still a work in progress and that most are still not in a final release stage yet. so there might be some issues with them still. here is deck's if you want to check it out:
[ROM][ICS][4.0.3][3-22-12][WIP] ics-deck-evo [pre-beta7] - xda-developers

Thank you. I have one quick question again. Am I rooted? on my bootloader screen it say's I am unlocked but say's S-On and that I still have HBOOT 2.18.001. I had read somewhere that you had to downgrade to the 2.10 then go to that revolutionary website. Please help?

you are rooted only to the extent that htc has let you. meaning that you have limited access to your system partitions. you can flash roms and kernels and such but you do not have access to your radios. so yes you will have the watermark and yes you will have s-on. basically what htc has done was give you a backdoor so to speak so that you can be rooted but still have your security turned on which in some ways is a good thing.

now if you want to get rid of the watermark then you will need to downgrade your misc partition so that you can change your hboot and get rid of the unlocked status.

but this is not necessary as you can still do everything that a rooted phone can do.

most apps will say that you are not rooted yet as you have not flashed the su file. the su file is what gives apps permission to access the system partitions that is why tb gave you the not rooted message.

now read the guide i linked and make a nandroid backup and get your flash on by flashing an ics rom.:D

OK. So I have been following your instructions and was able to create the Nandroid backup and wipe the phone where you said. I downloaded your superwipe file and the unofficial cyangenmod 9 ICS rom and the gapps file for the google apps. I accidentally (which really sucks) wiped my SD card while I was wiping everything else, so when I put those files on phone SD card there was nothing else there, but when I am in recovery flash zip from sd I can not locate the files. I go into the file I saw in the downloads and it just keeps scrolling through files in there then goes back to the start. Can you help me again? I know I am a little slow with this.

Redownload the files and put them back on the sd card then and you should be good to go.

Make sure you are not putting it into any subfolders so you can find it

So..I am new to this and want to try it. But I was wondering if you or anyone knows how to do this on a Mac. Or can it be done on a Mac?

Any help would be great.

step 2 How to get Recovery
either way, it is pretty simple. i will leave the decision up to you.

I am not finding it so simple lol. This is my first attempt at rooting a device and I have tried all three methods for step two (in the HTCdev recommended root method) and not been successful in any of them. Perhaps I have done some damage in these attempts that I need to recover from but I have no idea what that might be or how to go about it. Here are the details of what I am experiencing:

step one is completed by all measures I can detect: when I boot holding the volume down button the top line says UNLOCKED.

I am following the guide for my HBOOT version which is 2.18

When I try and load amon ra using the adb command method, I get to step 6 and I get a return of "fastboot is not a recognized internal or external command" in my command window.

When I used the Android flasher method, things appeared to succeed but when I tried to proceed and "go in to Recovery" my phone displays the HTC evo screen and then a loading graphic and then a fail graphic (pic of phone with red warning symbol) after which my only option is to pull the battery.

The PC36IMG method gets to step 3 and then instead of getting the option to update, I get a "Main version is older! Update failed."

I have tried going through the forums to try and figure out what my next step here is, but I am lost. Any help is appreciated.

With the fastboot command is you're phone in fastboot mode.power off then press and holds power plus vol down. This will take you to the bootloader.select fastboot.

Also are you right clicking on the Android folder while holding down the shifty key and selecting open command window here?

From power-down, I hold powr plus volume down. The menu I see is labeled HBoot with options: Fastboot, Recovery, Clear Storage, SIMLOCK, Hboot USB. Before I touch anything, the phone appears to attempt to load an image but is not finding a file or the wrong file (the text goes by and clears before I can get exact words but it looks something like: SD Checking...Loading some file name...No image found! three or four times with different file names in there).

I then select Fastboot. Says I am in FASTBOOT USB with options Bootloader, reboot, reboot bootloader and power down.

I now go to the Android folder I created, and go to a subfolder that has the recovery.img file in it. From there I shift right-click and choose open command window here. I type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img. I get 'fastboot' is not recognized as an internal or external command.

Sorry for the extra detail, but I have a feeling it is some small detail that I am messing up here. Thank you for your help!

The recovery.img file shouldn't be in a subfolder. It has to be in the same folder as the fastboot.exe. That's why it can't find it when you try to run the command.

I almost forgot to mention:
Welcome to the forums!!!!!!

Do you have the adb files I have in the guide in the Android folder?

Hi. First of all, great guide - thank you!
I'm stuck during the HTCDev section.

I'm in the command line on my computer with the cd c:\Android fastboot oem get_identifier_token all set up. My phone is connected to the computer and in the fastboot menu and I have all the files you instructed to download in one folder.

However, on the command window, it just says <waiting for device>. Any advice?

Just to make sure, but you are in the menu after you select fastboot in the bootloader, correct?

Also do you have htc sync installed?

@Ocnbrze: So I went through the HTC unlock, no issues, pretty easy. When my phone rebooted, it rebooted looking stock (with no contacts, emails, etc). Did I lose everything or is it hidden? I'm hoping my texts/contacts/misc data isn't all gone as there was nothing about doing a back-up prior to the unlock.
Also, I installed Amon Ra, but it didn't seem to recover anything. I don't want to proceed until I can find that data or confirm it's permagone.

Oddly enough, my weather display is finally auto-updating again. it was REALLY annoying that it stopped doing that at some point.

Also, it just occurred to me that my old stuff is locked in the recovery.img file. If that's the case, do I need to move that to my flash card to utilize it for a recovery?

Yes you will unfortunately loose you're data when unlocking your phone
Not sure what you mean by your last statement. What old stuff?

Well, that would have been nice to know. Even the HTC guide doesn't say anything about loosing all of your information on your phone. >sigh< annoying. So what is the Amon Ra recovery for if not for recovering the data that you had before??

I will ads that into the guide. Been meaning to for a while, keep forgetting to do it.

Recovery is so that you can flash roms, kernels, themes, and mods.it is also so that you can make and restore nandroid backups.
