Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

I will add that into the guide. Been meaning to for a while, keep forgetting to do it.

ok so here it is:
[Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide said:
rooting your phone will wipe all data so make sure that you backup your info accordingly:
1.for cantacts make sure that you have them all saved under google. that way when you flash a new rom or even get a new android device, you can sign in to google and all of your contacts will sync to your phone.
2.if you want to backup your sms or even mms text messages then you can use SMS Backup & Restore and it will save them to your sd card.
3.for your apps data, you can use MyBackup Pro. this will pretty much back up everything for you.

so i finally got the nerve to root.

I've read throught the guide a few good times and im still a little unclear on some minor details.

1. exactly where are the steps that i could possibly brick the phone(im going to use the HTCdev method), i wanna know so i can study them and really familiarize myself with what needs to go down

2. "9.you will need to copy the long block of text that is displayed
Right Click > Mark > highlight the block of text > Right click to copy
10.the first line you should highlight should be:
<<<<<Identifier Token Start>>>>>
and end with:
<<<<<Identifier Token End>>>>>
11.paste the text into the token field and then hit submit.
12.you will then get an email with the unlock key and commands to finish the process".......this part is kinda confusing. what do i have to enter? does it start with the arrows, or is it everything in between?

ex.
<<<<<Identifier Token Start>>>>>abc.ect<<<<<Identifier Token End>>>>>
or is it like this?
<<<<<Identifier Token Start>>>>>abc.ect<<<<<Identifier Token End>>>>>

3. do i have to have usb debugging checked and when do i have it mounted as disk drive and when do i have it on charge only? through out what steps?

First off this is my first time to root i have tried some other guides and have had no luck (due to lack of information and poor quality videos) however i have gotten pretty far with this guide and i am very thankful. except for the fact that my phone is stuck in the reboot screen like where its says sprint and has flying squares and then ends in 4g it just keeps repeating it over and over again! i havnt tried to recover since this has happend bc the guide says it will eventually reboot. i am inbetween step 10 AND 11 on the taco guide!

please help!

jhi

so i read that it says my phone my not even boot and like i said above it isnt so i continued trying to use the guid and this is what i am getting

C:\Users\Jordan\Desktop\Android>adb shell
# cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
/sdcard/flash_image: No such file or directory
#

think it is bc my phone will not turn on ?

jhi

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

are you using the taco root method? if so that is what the phone will do. it is very unstable at this point in time. if for any reason you want your phone back to being stable you can always do the undo command.

ok as far as the flash image file goes, did you extract the file? and did you put the file on the root of the sd card?

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!

1.it is super hard to brick your phone. the only tru method that i know of is if your are trying to update and flash the radio zip files and you pull the battery out while doing so. this is a tru way to brick the phone. as long as you can get to the bootloader or recovery, there is always a way to fix things.

2.you need to start with <<<<<Identifier Token Start>>>>> and end with <<<<<Identifier Token End>>>>>

3.there is no need to have usb debugging turned on or even have your phone set as a disk drive. with the HTCdev method, your phone is in fastboot from the bootloader so you will not need to have it setup like that. just follow the guide and you will be rooted in no time.

"first lets make sure that this guide is for you. before we do anything make sure that you have disbaled fastboot. on you phone go to settings>apps>uncheck the fastboot option at the bottom. next you will need to power off then press and hold power+vol down. this will take you to the bootloader screen.
1.if you have hboot 2.18 and it says locked at the top then this guide is for you. "

-->I can not even get to this part. I disabled fast boot as you said and now no matter what I can not get my phone to boot back up. Help please!

Are you on the bootloader? You can just pull the battery out and reboot that way.

no my phone will not turn on at all. It has not indication lights either. If i plug it in to the usb cable it shows it there but it wont even go into the bootloader

Ok so I have gotten it to boot up but not in the bootloader. I am still, even after this scare of bricking my phone, willing to root it.

Has anyone ever had that same problem?

currently in the bootloader! Yea!

Bricking it is really hard to do, really. Just follow the guide step by step and u should be good to go.

So I thought id give it another shot, and this time, im going over every slight detail...
When I begin tacoroot, and I boot into recovery, I wait for the red triangle/exclamation point and i press Vol +and- and power, I see a bit below the middle of the screen "E:Cant open /cache/recovery/command" in yellow font. I click power button to select reboot system.

Is that yellow error supposed to come up when tying to boot into recovery, or is this why i havent been able to get anywhere?

I followed all the steps, but when i entered the code I get this message:
We're sorry, but it appears your attempt to unlock the bootloader on this device has failed. This could be caused by several factors including simple errors in the entry of the unlock token, problems with your device, or a lack of manufacturer support for the unlocking process. Please see the specific error code listed below, and try again if necessary.

Error Code: Invalid Bootloader Token Length.
Error Reason: The submitted Token appears to be the wrong length and won\'t work.

I am quite sure I did everything properly...anyone know what the problem might be?? Thanks!

2.18 EVO 4g 2.3.5 < waiting on device >
welcome to the forums!!!!!
can you give us more detail on your issue? where are you getting this? what method are you
using? do you have usb debugging turned on and fastboot disabled?

that is actually normal. being that you are not rooted and are not allowed access to those commands.

looks like you did not copy the token completely.
the first line you should highlight should be:
<<<<<Identifier Token Start>>>>>

Thanks for the quick response! well it looks like the token I put in was put in correctly. Is there anything I might be forgetting to do to my phone first that would give me a different token? Is the token that I paste being generated from my phone? By the way-I'm using the official HTC method.

are you copying and pasting it then? it has to be exactly what is give to you. there is nothing really that you need to do on your phone as most of this is done thru HTCdev site. if you are entering the token correctly, then i have no idea on what is going on. maybe start all over?

It worked! I tried it again this morning and for whatever reason it all went through. Now aren't I supposed to be able to delete nascar and all that junk??

it is now telling me in the command prompt that oem is not recognized as an internal or external command.

Any one know what I am doing wrong?

Thank you in advance!

are you entering the command from the android folder you created? do you have the three files in the android folder(adb.exe, fastboot.exe, AdbWinApi.dll)?

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!
your phone needs to be in fastboot (not the fastboot that is in the settings of your phone). you need to be in the bootloader and select fastboot then you enter in the commands.

I'm trying taco root and when I do step 10
adb shell /data/local/tacoroot.sh --root

it says error: device not found
Am I supposed to do it while it's still green? Do I wait until it's red?
I've tried both.
