Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

Hi folks,

You guys are freaking awesome. I spent several days reading, learning, prepping, and I've completed the HTCdev method of rooting and am currently messing around w/ my first ROM (MikG 3.11, to be more specific). :)

Can you point me to some stuff I can read about backups and maintaining apps/data from ROM to ROM? It's my understanding that MyBackup and Titanium are the two main apps that people are using, but I'm a little unclear as to how that process works. After I have my phone set up the way I want, with apps reinstalled, contacts/SMS reestablished, do these backup apps save that state and move it from ROM to ROM? Or do I have to do the whole backup/reinstall thing every time I flash a new ROM?

Additionally, after repartitioning my SD card, what files/folders should I move back to the card? I backed up everything on the card to my PC. Do I do this after I flash the ROM?

Thanks!

ok i would go here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html and skip the rooting part. go to the after root section and you will find tons of info. it has info on things like how to flash a rom or kernel as well as how to partition your card.

i will see what i can do to either add the info into the current guide or at least make the links to it and others more easy to spot to help others learn what the possibilities are now that the phone is rooted.

any questions you have please fell free to ask them.

and i'm very glad that you were able to get you root and your flash on!:D

Yep, that's the guide I was using to partition (which went flawlessly!), but it doesn't say anything about which folders and files I can or should copy back to the SD card after partitioning. I understand that necessary folders will be repopulated as they're needed, but I'm not sure what else I should be moving back onto the card.

Also, I've been trying to install Darktremors but have been unsuccessful. I've tried to download the file "Version 2.7.5.3 Beta 04" several times throughout the day, but it keeps saying "Interrupted" and never finishes downloading. Any idea what could be wrong?

Finally, any pointers on places where I can read about best backing up practices? I'm specifically interested in preserving my apps/data/settings easily if I want to try out different ROMs.

Thanks again!

well that will be up to you. the stuff on your card is really not necessary. the only thing that i would keep are the nandroid backups. the rest is up to you.

and as far as darktremors, it seems that the beta4 is down. i get the 4o4 error message when trying to download it myself. try this one:dtapps2sd-2.7.5.3-beta04-signed.zip

as far as backing up your apps and its data i would use either titanium backup(i use this one) or rom toolbox.

unfortunately there is nothing really that will save how you have things setup on your phone. however, a nandroid backup will preserve your phone exactly how you have it setup. so you can always go back to it , if either something goes wrong or if you do not like a particular rom.

hope this helps.

hellllp im stuck , okay trying to root an android evo 4g; never had to do it this way before since this is a refurb phone and i accepted the prl by accident....

im stuck on this step"

Code:
adb shell

It tells me i have invalid length..whats that mean? help!

Wish I could help you guys but I am less familiar with that process than you are since I rooted previously. hang in there, someone will most likely be along that can help you. And welcome to the Forums!

I used the htcdev method for rooting my phone and I am on the last part flashing a rom and I was going to do a nandroid backup. I downloaded rom manager to do this and when I tried to backup phone it said I do not have superuser permissions HELPPPPPP!!!

I think you need a recovery, then superuser
I would not use rom manager.:)

I think I read about that, you have to install super user first I think. Not sure if there was a link to the app in the write up or if you just download it from the market. uh playstore.

Don't shoot me if I am wrong but give that a try. :p

Edit: yeah, what he said! :) completely missed that about rom manager. figured you already had a custom recovery though or you wouldn't be anywhere that gave you an option to nand. ???

I am also assuming he was trying to nand with rom manager?
There is also step 3 with a link to superuser zip. (Edit..yup, just checked)

ya I put amora ra on my phone what do i dod with it
Ha, good. Just as I posted my last question, I see you answered it.
Great! you have a recovery...and a good one at that.
Now, in that same guide, there will be instructions how to flash the superuser zip....here is the zip to download, then follow those instructions...
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/58324641/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
That link is from my dropbox...it is the same zip as the instructions.

Crap I did the superwipe zip and I only get the white screen with the bootloader version and fastboot ect screen. Lmao. My wife is going to kill me can someone call me and help for a min????

I tried calling you and got a female voice message. did you give out the number to the phone that is messed up?

edit: basically, at this point, you just have to flash a rom. The nandroid bit is now moot, unless you just want to make a nand of your wimax.

Do you know how to wipe and flash a rom? I would suggest the MikG 3.11 full for ease of use and similarity to stock. Lots of good roms out there but this would get you going quicker. I'll get you a link too.

Link was messed up!

Have to go here http://themikmik.com/showthread.php?10338-MikG-v3-11-3-9-2012

Bottom of first post is 3.11 full version. click on it, then you have to click on skip the ad and then it downloads.

ok sorry not posting yet. been really busy lately. just to make sure are you typing the command in or are you copying and pasting in the command? it is easier to copy and paste the command. also do you have the android folder setup with the appropriate files? are you entering the command from the android folder?

All you people are AWESOME!!!! Thank you guys for your help. Thanks Mike and dustwun77 for calling.

just wanted to give a shoutout to dusty and mikey for the help with a fellow forum member, xraygunner. thanx guys.

I have an EVO 4G flashed to Cricket. Can I root the device without messing up the Cricket flash? Primarily I'm looking to be rid of the bloatware but being able to flash custom roms would be a bonus.
