Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

stay on stock
you will need the latest su(superapp) found here:
Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip just flash that in recovery and you will have a rooted stock rom:
1.download and move the su file to the root of your sd card that means not in any folder. it just needs to be on your card.
2.go into recovery (power off, make sure fastboot is unabled, and then press and hold power+vol down)
3.select flash zip from sdcard
4.navigate to your su file by using the vol up and down button and select it with the power button.
5.once done, reboot. now you have a rooted stock rom

so when i am doing this it is telling me that it cannot complete action in recovery. The file is on my sd card but it is not unzipped because it wont let you. Am I missing a step...I am sure that i will go custom later, its all new so i thought i'd start off stock

turns out my driver is outdated because it keeps telling me there is an issue with the device, need help getting and update driver
I believe I have the latest HTC sync. If nit you can go to HTC's website and get the latest HTC sync there. With HTC sync will come with the latest drivers.

it says
"finding update package...
Opening update package...
e:cant open /sdcard/superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted

I would redownload it. sounds like you got a bad download.

i have redownloaded it twice once to the android folder and then transferred over then once direct to the sd card still the same error

do i have to flash a rom or can i continue on to the unrevoked portion of unlock?

you do not have to flash a rom, but i would highly recommend it. i would try mikg3.11 as it is way better then stock. plus it will have sprint's hotspot hacked and all of the bloatware removed.

not sure why you are having a hard time with the su file.

I will get thru it all and flash a rom at the end...and the mikg3 sounds good because i really only want it to get the hot spot and be able to take the stupid i dont want them apps off my phone ie nova, stocks, peep, etc.. so i wil let you know how it goes later today. Thank you all so much for your help i know that i asked a lot of questions.

same issue with that rom, and now phone only opens it in bootloader screen and sd card is not accessible now, will need to take sd card out of phone and put into adapter later, right now its a good paper weight

I have the evo 2.3.5 hboot 2.18
how am i supposed to root my phone, the same way by using the hboot 2.16 one? or is there something different i need. i'm not quite sure what these # means lol but do they really matter when rooting?

So drivers installed, going through all the hassle figured why not ask which Rom should I ? Ice cream 4.0.3 maybe ?

I did the HTCdev method and flashed the MikG 3.11 ROM and i really, really like it! Thanks again, ocnbrze.

One problem I'm having that I haven't seen listed on this thread is an inconsistent ability to access SD card via PC through USB. I plug it in, it shows up in Windows Explorer as a Removable Disk, then disappears, or stays there but when I click on it it says to connect a device. Out of about six attempts today I finally got it to work once.

Any ideas what the problem might be or better yet, a solution? This never happened before rooting and ROMing, even once. Could be the card, I suppose, but it seems a strange coincidence.

it could be a number of things. it could be the card, the cable, and it also could be something on the card. you can try this fix:[ How-To ] Fix SD card not being detected & USB port not working - xda-developers

Hello, this is my first time rooting a phone. I have the HTC Evo 4g and used the HTCDev method. Everything went fine until I went to do step 3 where you flash the superuser file. I put it in the root of my sd card and pressed volume down + power and went to the boot screen. I went down and selected recovery and I got a black screen with a phone and a red triangle over it. Nothing happens after this. What did I do wrong!?

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!
that is because you still have a stock recovery which you do not have access to. you need to install a custom recovery. you need to do step #2 to get recovery onto your phone then you can flash the su file.

Thanks! I actually figured it out last night before I went to bed. I'm now fully rotted and trying to figure out how to use overclock.

NICE!!!!!!!!!!!
congrats on getting your root on. now its time go and get your flash on:D

you need a custom kernel if you want to overclock your phone.

so here are some reading for you:

1.i would read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. just skip the root section and go to the after root section. it covers things like making a nandrid backup and how to flash roms and kernels.

2.here is a guide on kernels:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/389360-kernels-dummies.html

3.and here is a guide on setcpu which is an app that will help you over and underclock your phone:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/210253-setcpu-guide.html

Hi folks,

You guys are freaking awesome. I spent several days reading, learning, prepping, and I've completed the HTCdev method of rooting and am currently messing around w/ my first ROM (MikG 3.11, to be more specific). :)

Can you point me to some stuff I can read about backups and maintaining apps/data from ROM to ROM? It's my understanding that MyBackup and Titanium are the two main apps that people are using, but I'm a little unclear as to how that process works. After I have my phone set up the way I want, with apps reinstalled, contacts/SMS reestablished, do these backup apps save that state and move it from ROM to ROM? Or do I have to do the whole backup/reinstall thing every time I flash a new ROM?

Additionally, after repartitioning my SD card, what files/folders should I move back to the card? I backed up everything on the card to my PC. Do I do this after I flash the ROM?

Thanks!
