If i wanna try new roms i just factory reset then open recovery and then select the ROM and...mount it or SD card install I forgot what its called.... or do i just have to do super wipe then do the ROM mount thing install

No, but you can still flash roms/kernels etc.
No need to be s-off. There are some things you cannot do such as flash radios but s-on is sufficient.
If you prefer to be s-off, follow the Captains guide....it is more involved but can be done if you like.
In order to flash a rom...download rom to sd card.
Boot into recovery, wipe all except sd card....I wipe 3 times myself.
Choose "flash from zip" while still in recovery and find the rom.
Flash it, let it do its thing.
I would read the op about the rom as far as flashing it but that's the general idea.
Note: make a nandroid backup FIRST....
That way if something goes awry, you can restore back to where you started.
no you do not need to be s-off. htc has given us a backdoor so to speak so that it is not necessary. to be s-off you will need to do captain"s method (taco root will not work with an unlocked bootloader).
just go to the second post. there is a section on how to flash roms as well as how to make a nandroid backup.

yes, mikg3.11 has the hacked hotspot that you can use. also you can get the wireless tethering app from here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...net-tethering-w-evo-4g-3g-wireless-wired.html
the hacked hotspot can't be used with 4g. however, the wireless app can be used with both 4g and 3g. and no you will not be charged.

First time poster and been lurking for about 2 weeks
I had been wanting to root my EVO for a few months but been putting it off, mainly for fear that I'd screw something up and been busy with other stuff. Well, over the weekend I finally decided to take the plunge and root my phone, using the HTC dev method. Figured I'd have nothing to lose since my phone is out of warranty plus I've been eligible for a free upgrade since Jan.
I want to thank ocnbrze for an excellent and easy to follow guide
After I did the HTC dev method, I took ocnbrze's suggestion and installed Amon_RA, Mikg_3.11 and even used Pnuema's ics theme.
I had no real problems rooting my phone. The issues I had were me not reading how to c/p the token, lol and downloading some software that gave me the files I already had *sigh*
Other then that, all went well and now learning all I can do with my "new" EVO.

a word of warning it can become an addiction and you might end up joining us in the flashaholics anonymous program
ok so i added capt throwback's amon ra recovery file for those who have 5.07 on their phone. i felt like i should not bombard members with too many choices about recovery at the moment. i do not want it to get too overwhelming. i think that the smelkus recovery though good should be left up to the user after they gain root. amon ra is much easier to pick up.
if you guys have any thoughts about it, i welcome all to chime in.

Just reading ocnbrze last post and I get the feeling while it's a good product there might not be overwhelming factors for me to change my current recovery Amon ra.
Just curious for you input on this, Thanks.

its is a good recovery from what i hear. i am just old school and have issues trying out other recoveries so i'm a little gun shy myself. but it is based off of amon ra2.3 and it can use clockwork mod nandroids. plus you can utilize the capacitative touch buttons on the phone.

i know you can unlock the bootloader, but from there i'm not sure. i would not try the other methods listed in this guide. just keep in mind to never accept an ota as rooting will become harder to do as you are finding out. this will apply to all phones going forward.

iam new to this but my htc evo 4g is unlock but its not rooted

congrats on get it unlocked!!!! now all you need to do is either continue with the HTCdev method or you can follow the captain's guide. so not sure what you want to do.
Successfully Unlocked Evo and flashed recovery as well as downloaded superuser. I know thus far that the Evo is rooted because I installed busybox and it confirmed it, I also gained superuser access, however...When I install root applications superuser does not recognize them. Screenshot wont work, and the Su binary update in Screenshot has failed to gain root access, at this point i'm lost because as far as I know my Evo is rooted with S-On...what should I do? Anyone... Please.

what dose unlocking your bootloader do.
Open up superuser app, open preferences and click on the Automatic response and see if it set to "prompt" instead of "deny"....

Edit: there is alot more there to read, but I dont know if that completely answered your question?
It is set on prompt and still when ever I open a rooted app it fails to recognize it.
you need to flash the su file and not use the one in the app store.
