I followed the rooting for dummies guide 2.3.5 and I did flash the file from online as well as downloaded it from the market and delete it of the root of the sd card when i was finished as told. did i do something wrong?
It's super user and I already checked for binary update, that was where I came across su binary failing to gain root access. Thanks for assistin BTW.

you will need the latest su(superapp) found here:
Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip just flash that in recovery and you will have a rooted stock rom:
1.download and move the su file to the root of your sd card that means not in any folder. it just needs to be on your card.
2.go into recovery (power off, make sure fastboot is unabled, and then press and hold power+vol down)
3.select flash zip from sdcard
4.navigate to your su file by using the vol up and down button and select it with the power button.
5.once done, reboot. now you have a rooted stock rom

I have done every step on the HTCdev method for my EVO 4g and I'm in the CMD trying to type"fastboot oem get_identifier_token" and it keeps saying "

Do you have fastboot.exe file in the correct "android" folder you created?
Did you open a command window from that "android" folder?
You are on step 8 correct?
Make sure the spacing between characters is correct and spelling is correct.
C:\Android>fastboot oem get_identifier_token
Maybe you are missing the word "Android"

Not totally sure, but I would think so.Does this mean this method can be done using a Mac (ie without the initial need of a PC for installing revolutionary..that was the only "rate limiting step" that kept us Mac users from easily rooting)...??
Using HTCDev method unlocks your bootloader but you will be s-on still.
However, you can still flash roms/kernels etc.
No need to go thru revolutionary/Capt Method/unrevoked etc unless you want to be totally s-off.

ive done the tacoroot and it did not work. hw can i get my phone back to the original state?
in the guide it mentions the undo command. enter that and your phone will return to a stable state.
what happened? can you give any more details? was there errors? at what step?

Hi there! Thanks for the guides they seem pretty straight forward. I have some questions before I even start to try this lol. (Mostly I have no idea what the heck I'm doin but I can usually follow instructions well) All I want to do is root my Evo so I can get rid of the bloatware and make more room on the phone. Is unlocking necessary?
welcome to the forums!!!!!!!
well unlocking is not necessary. you can always root via the taco root method which is a little more difficult but doable. but when you unlock the bootloader, you can still delete bloatware. i would really suggest that you flash mikg3.11 which is sooooo much better then stock and it already has bloatware removed. the directions are in the guide.

The sole reason I began researching rooting was because I am having GPS problems with my refurb Evo, and the most reliable fixes require rooting. however, after reading I realize there are far more reasons to do so.

Now, from what I've read, since S-off is present, this phone has been rooted.
If i go to Recovery, I get the pic of the red triangle! which means there is no custom recovery installed.
There is no superuser icons present.
My question is do i still need to run the HTC root?
Can I try to install amon_Ra like it is?
This is a work provided phone that links back to my Outlook for contacts and calender through exchange activesync. I understand that in order to retain these functions, I will need a sense based UI, correct?
I'm looking forward to moving forward with this device, but would like to establish myself here and get any feedback from you guys first.

this is a remanufactured e-bay phone that came exactly as described out of the box.
I imagine someone rooted it previous to refurb, but the SD card was replaced and the phone wiped to original. I can only speculate at this point.
so do i risk screwing anything up by trying some downloads?
will i have to reinstall htcsynch since I unistalled it? (a different message board was directing me to a different root method that require its removal. I later found out that their method would not work with the 2.3.5)

Weird.. I'm away from the computer.. There is a sticky at the top of this forum that has root guide for gingerbread 2.3.5 just get it unlocked and get a recovery you should be fine.

No need to unlock if it's already S-OFF.
The watermark is irrelevant if you're S-OFF. Custom recovery (I recommend the PC36IMG.zip method), then on to a custom ROM is all that needs to be done.
