Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

Done... now what?...I got the bin file.
From the guide....

12.you will then get an email with the unlock key and commands to finish the process.
13.once you get the email download the attached .bin file and move to your android folder you created earlier.
14.open the command window (right click+shift, open command window here) and type:

fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
15.you will then see a disclaimer just select yes.
CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YOU ARE NOW UNLOCKED!!!!!!
Then onto step 2...get recovery:)

Ok...Check...Now what boss.
Congrats!! you are almost there.
You are unlocked!
Now go to step 2--"How to get Recovery"
There are 3 ways to get a recovery, all are easy, just a matter of preference.
I would try step 3--the PC36IMG method...I am biased towards that because that's the method I used to root 3 evo's. But thats just me.
A recovery is kinda like a mini operating system on your phone.
You can flash roms/kernels and other things thru recovery.
You can fix wonky acting phones thru recovery. etc.
So, onto step 2!!

Well I read it and I am alittle puzzle here about which software version I have..On what.
o.k...in your phone, go to
menu/settings/about phone
somewhere in there (dont remember where) you should see your version #
4.67.xxx or 5.07.xxxx
Not your android version 2.3.5.xxx, the other one is the one you're looking for.

Found it..I wrote down everything on a txt file incase I needed..I downloaded the file I needed...What next..

2.rename the file so that it is only PC36IMG. make sure that you do not add any extra .zip's to the name as windows hides extensions by default.
3.transfer the file to the root (that means not in any folder) of the sd card.
4.power off (you most likely need to uncheck fastboot. settings/apps/uncheck fastboot.) then press and hold power+vol down.
5.hboot should see the file and select yes to update.
6.select no to reboot because we want to go into recovery and make a nandroid backup.
7.select recovery.
8.select backup and restore and select backup
9. select the first three and wimax. the other partitions do not need to be backed up. always keep one nandroid backup with wimax keys backed up on your computer.
10.now you can reboot.
11.using a file manager of some sort or even through your computer via usb, you should rename or delete the PC36IMG file on your card. otherwise you will be asked to update every time you go to the hboot screen. you do not need that file any more.

Just to add here..
Be sure to use caps...as in PC36IMG.zip, not pc36img.zip.
The root of the sd card means, the top, or, not in any folder.
In other words, when you plug your phone into computer and mount as disc drive, what you see on computer are your sd card contents, not the phone contents..follow? Rename that file correctly, and drop it onto sd card, unmount phone and follow from step 4.
DO NOT ADD AN EXTRA .ZIP TO THE END....it will not work then...windows hides .zip files.:)

I can change the name but not the .zip its still shows as a .zip file not just a file itself.
If it downloaded as PC36IMG.zip--that's fine.
If it downloaded as PC36IMG_amon.blahblahblah-hithere-whee.zip,
then rename it to PC36IMG.zip only.
Did that answer your question? wasn't quite sure what you meant:(

Edit: I just re-read your post, and yes you are correct.

Ok done..What next?.
Excellent, going good so far,
now,

4.power off (you most likely need to uncheck fastboot. settings/apps/uncheck fastboot.) then press and hold power+vol down.
5.hboot should see the file and select yes to update.
6.select no to reboot because we want to go into recovery and make a nandroid backup.

ok so are sure you named it right? it needs to be PC36IMG all caps and it can't have an extra .zip to the name. (you do understand about extensions, right?)

also it needs to be on the root of the card (no folders)

and last the card has to be something other then a 2g card (the og evo has issues with that size card for some reason)

@ocn thanks ocn!
@Digital...I'm going to bed and you are in good hands,,trust me, he taught me ALOT!!!
without him, I would not be able to help you/others.
G'nite ya'll!
:goodnight:

i understand that, but in order for the bootloader to see the file and update it has to be what i just posted previously. just make sure that everything checks out.

if all three check out then something somewhere is not right.

so again check to see if you did everything above correctly.

I downloaded the file.. Renamed it with all caps then I stick it in a 8gb sd card the main directory..no sub folders or anything. I went to recovery mode(hboot) and it scanned the sd card it read it but no option to say yes to update or anything...Am I missing anything here.

ok just to make sure the name is correct. when you look at your computer files(lets say the files you download) do you see extensions (ie .zip or .exe)? or not? windows 7 hides extensions by default.

this is important as if you were to add a .zip to the name and it looks like this PC36IMG.zip and your computer hides extensions then the reality of the name would be PC36IMG.zip.zip which will not work.

or it could be the opposite where it shows the extensions and then when you name it you do not put the .zip extension then in reality the file would be named PC36IMG which also does not work.

so make sure that you name the file exactly PC36IMG with no extra .zips.
