Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

yes you are supposed to open a command window. i'm not really sure on macs on how to do that. but the fastboot command should work. you just need to open the command window that is opened in the right path. the command needs to be entered to where you have the android folder with the adb and fastboot.exe files.

OK boss this is getting harder. I have a pc laptop and have done everything on there but there is one problem and that is the SDK manager is not showing up. I installed the bundle and the only thing thats showing up in the sdk menu is extras,platforms,platform-tools,system-images and tools, no other option. Would you know what to do?

Hey OCN and Capn', a little bit ago, you 2 were trying to help a guy name Mike that was having an issue with the taco method on step 12, where it could not find the flash_image file on the sd card it seemed. I had that same issue today, everything went smoothly untill "cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image" command. The 2 commands after that worked, just not the first command. looked for hours through posts today. I finally got it to work. I did 2 things, so im not sure if it was just 1 or a combination of both that got it to work for me. step 1 i did was use the phone to format the sdcard twice. I then downloaded superoneclick and used that to attempt root untill it froze on step 7(i was expecting it to fail as i know it doesnt work for newer versions of our phone), i then exited that. i then placed the flash_image file and the mtd-eng.img file back on my sd card. I then started from step 6 of the guide and BOOM, worked like a charm, the commands worked perfectly and the pc36img worked also. I know its a bit late in this discussion, but i figured since others had the same issue, i would like to report my findings to you guys as it could possibly help those with the same issue.

Glad it worked out for you! :)
Did you format the sd card via the stock recovery? (not even sure if that is an option in the stock recovery for that) or via the stock rom options to format card?

Edit: oops, my bad...WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!! :D

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i doubt that the superoneclick was the actual thing that worked. i do however believe that it might have been that you used the phone to format the card. i think that was the one thing that migt have worked.

..........anyways glad you got it working and thanx for posting how you got it to work

now go and get your flash on:D

The only thing that would make me think superoneclick had anything to do with it is the zergrush, my phone was completely messed up. I tried to unroot using the 2.18 method and i forgot to do the misc partition part and just flashed the 6.17 hboot and then flashed an RUU to return to stock. The phone forced itself to update to the 5.07 OTA. At that point, i could no longer flash any other RUU or reroot because revolutionary thought i was already s-off but couldnt flash a recovery, and the RUU failed, well we both know why that failed. But my phone was def. unrooted so i couldnt bypass anything either, taco method was my last resort. i honestly believe formatting the sdcard via the phone itself was the reason i got it to work, but cant really 100% say it was fully that in these situations :)

EDIT: now i cant get unrevoked to install the recovery to the phone and i even tried superoneclick again and superoneclick says it completed root but still says s-on. also cant run a pc36img to install a custom recovery either so im still not rooted so superoneclick lied. ...not sure what the heck is going on...

and you said you tried taco root, correct? did you downgrade the misc partition? did the output matched with what i have in the guide? i would really not recommend using supeoneclick again.

try and re-run taco root again.

Hi guys, I'm new here. I have a question. Since rooting my HTC Evo 4g with mikG 3.11 (and loving it by the way) I seem to have a major problem involving google play. Some apps I can download just fine but for some games (such as angry birds star wars) or apps (astro file manager) refuse to download leaving me with "error downloading [app name]. Error 428" or something like that. I tried to switch to other markets like apptoid but sometimes when I install an apk, there is an error saying that the application was not installed. Is this a common isssue? Is this because of the rom? I have enough space both internally and on my SD card and I am at my wits end. I tried deleting cache, dalvik cache, force closing google services framework to no avail. I need help guys, I really don't want to reflash just to get the market up and running.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!
hmmmm well you can always wipe dalvik cache, cache and then re-flash the rom. you will not loose your settings or data. try that and let us know if that works.

MikG has dalvik-cache on the /cache partition by default, which is basically fine. However, when you want to download a large app, and you have a good amount of other apps installed on your device, the amount of room in /cache may be insufficient to accommodate the size of the download (since Play Store downloads to /cache, and that room is being occupied by apps' dalvik-cache)

The easiest solution is to either move dalvik-cache back to internal memory, or, if you're partitioned, move it to the ext partition. The commands in terminal to do that are "a2sd nocache" and "a2sd cachesd", respectively. Depending on the class of your card, internal memory might be a better option, unless you're almost out of room, that is. So if you're not partitioned yet, this would probably be a good time to do it ;).

huh, i never knew that dalvik cache was moved to the cache partition in mikg3.11. thanx capt, once again!!!!!!

so ummmmmmm...........do what he said:D

yes, do what he said ^^^ and the person above him! yeah, yeah, what he said lol :D
Trust me........, trust the Capt, and you never go wrong! :D

Edit: I think his "a2sd catches" should be "a2sdcachesd".....**slinks away sheepishly**
a typo for sure...he types fast :)

Dang it. No, I typed it right. Stupid autocorrect doesn't know DT A2SD commands, lol. I corrected in the original post. Thanks for pointing it out!

Thanks guys for the quick response! After some independent research and your comments I did discover the main problem was the bleeding cache which cannot handle the load. Guess I'll cut my losses and attempt to partition the dalvik cache tomorrow....
Again thanks!

So I have been following the directions at the beginning of this thread to root my phone. When I go to HTCDEV.com (I"m signed in), and select "all other supported models".....I click the tab and nothing happens...Need Help Please!
