Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

After still trying other GB sense roms, almost none had the stock music players that saved the spot in the song. Neither would the stock rom. And the way HTC support (twice) seemed to know about the problem with no explanation from me, it would seem that they know they have a bug in the Sprint GB stock rom that they never fixed. Otherwise why would almost every rom have the same issue as well?

It really seems to be a moot point since this phone is 2.5 years old, although there still seems to be updated roms at XDA. And no one listens to "newbies" as I found by Mik.

flash a rom:
1.first you need the vr superwipe (this is not a rom. this is a file that wipes your sytem partitions and also wipes all the temp files as well:ZZZVR_SUPERWIPE.zip. download it and put it on your card. (optional)*
2.download the rom (i recommend MikG v3.11 [3/9/2012]) of your choice and transfer it to your card.
3.go into recovery
4.make a nandroid backup
5.select wipe from the main menu and wipe dalvik cache, cache, and data
6.select flash zip from sdcard
7.find the superwipe file and select it.(optional)
8.find your rom and select it.
9.reboot.

I have made it all the way down to step #6
I dont see either one of the files. what i do see is my directories. Am I missing soething here?

never mind i had downloaded the advertisment file

never mind i had downloaded the advertisment file

lol i hate that. yeah you will have to learn how to figure out where the actual download file is at. those websites bury them on purpose...........i guess you kind of have to put up with it if you want those files free.

Im all about free, that is why i finally decide to root. Got a new tablet for xmas, and im planning on using the hotspot so that i will have wifi wherever.

Do you have a good suggestion? Your guide was was awsome!

thanx

well most roms have the hotspot hacked but it will not work on 4g. however the wireless tethering app does work with 4g but some versions work better then others.

you can get them in this guide:

Alright, I'm hung up a bit, just need a little clarification.

Step 3 Flash the SU File OR Flash a ROM

I unzipped the Superwipe zip folder and put the contents on my sd card.
I unzipped the MikG zip folder and began to put the contents on my sd card, but there is a Meta.inf folder in the rom folder that is also in the Superwipe folder. I chose to replace any duplicate folder/files. Was that correct?

I go into recovery, but there is not an option for Nandroid.

The nandroid app from Google market/play store says i am not rooted yet if I try to use it when booted up.

The way I am reading the guide is that I either flash the su file or the custom rom.

Do I need to flash the su file and wipe and flash the rom instead?

you are not rooted until you either flash the su file (this is what gives you root access to the system partitions, without it root apps and flashing roms can't be done) or flash a custom rom which has the su file cooked in.

also do not extract or unzip any files unless told to do so. just download the files and move it to the sd card.

also in recovery there should be a backup and restore option. this is where you will make your nandroid backups.

Gotcha! I must have inferred that from a search in this thread looking up some trouble I was having in the past.

For the nandroid backup, I keep the first three (boot, system, and data) checked and checked winmax then performed the backup. What does backing up the recovery do for me, or the other options for that matter?

I borrowed this from OCNBRZE guide :D

what are nandroid backups and why are they important? well nandroid backups are a complete snapshot of the current state of your phone. it will save everything (contacts, apps and its data, emails and text messages, and any other mods or settings you have on your rom). think of nandroid backups as a safety net. if anything goes wrong or if you change your mind on a rom you do not like, you can always go back and restore a previous nandroid backup. just remember that anytime you make any changes to your phone always make a nandroid backup.

also to save space keep only a few nandroids on your card. nandroids can be pretty big depending on the rom and what you are backing up. and you can rename your nandroid backups. just make sure not to have spaces or weird symbols in the name.

when doing a nandroid backup in amon ra, make sure to keep the first three checked then check wimax (you do not need to do this all the time.) just keep one nandroid backup with your wimax keys backed up on your computer. the rest of the time when doing nandroid backups, you can just backup the first three in amon ra. also if you have your sd card partitioned (see the Partitioning and Moving Apps to the Card section for the how to's) you should select sd ext as well. this wiil also backup all your apps.

clockwork mod will backup wimax automatically.

one of the things you can do to help keep your nandroid backups organized is to rename them. but in order to do that you have to know where to find them. in amon ra recovery they are found in the nandroid folder that is created on the sd card. in clockwork mod they are found in the clockwork mod folder. for amon ra there is a sub folder that is phone specific. mine is named: HT0CVHL01139. inside this folder is your nandroid backup. it should look like:BDES-20120323-0530.

now to rename them, you can rename them to anything that you like, just do not use any weird symbols and do not use spaces within the name. for me i usually just rename them by deleting the BDES part and insert the name of the rom it belongs to. for instance CM7-20120323-0530 could be a name of one of my nandroid backups. also if you notice the numbers correspond to date and time.

Edit: This and other info is posted at the start of this thread.

That info I read but I was curious about the other options in nandroid and what they do. However, I am running the rom right now and going through setup for email so my questions should be posted elsewhere; I'll do some searching as well.

Thanks to everyone for the help!

well recovery will backup recovery(not sure why you would need that), then there is sd ext which has to do with partitioning your card,.....lol i can't remember what the other options are.

really what i have in the guide is all you will ever need.

This is a great forum! The best I could find after hours of treasure hunting!

OK, I'm somewhat out of practice so consider me new at this. Have made good progress. I have an HTC EVO 4G and rooted it 2 years ago. It finally crashed and the tech @ the Sprint Store installed the latest ota which locked it up.

I'm attempting to "re-root" it using the "HTCdev method". I tried to unlock the bootloader and got to the point where I pasted the token info and hit "Submit". I get this error:

We're sorry, but it appears your attempt to unlock the bootloader on this device has failed. This could be caused by several factors including simple errors in the entry of the unlock token, problems with your device, or a lack of manufacturer support for the unlocking process. Please see the specific error code listed below, and try again if necessary.

Error Code: Invalid Bootloader Token Length.
Error Reason: The submitted Token appears to be the wrong length and won't work.

Any clues?

There are plenty of willing members here to help you get it figured out. What method you you use for the rooting process?

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!
it looks like you are not entering the right amount in the code.

it needs to start from here:
<<<<<Identifier Token Start>>>>>
and end with:
<<<<<Identifier Token End>>>>>

Hey thanks for the super quick replies.

I'm using the "HTCdev method". The code I pasted into the HTC app had the word "bootloader" at the beginning of each line. I see now (as is probably true 90% of the time) that I did not read the instructions carefully. DOH!

I'll see if it unlocks now...

Thanks a ton!

You're gonna have so much fun after root it's crazy fun:D

WOW! This really work well. SUCCESS!!! I am amazed at how the author(s) were able to take a detailed proceedure and make it so simple! Still blown away at the results. THANKYOUVERYMUCH!!!

so looks like you took the latest ota for our beloved evo and now you want to root it. to begin with never accept an ota when you are thinking about rooting your phone. this will apply for all phones going forward. with each new ota, rooting will become harder and harder to do. [...]

I have an unroot question.

This is probably the wrong thread, but will the unroot guide at the beginning of this thread work for HTC incredible 2?

I think I have gingerbread, and I think the phone was 2.3.4 from the factory but not 100% sure.

Thanks

welcome to forums!!!!!!!!!

NO!!!!!!

THIS IS SPECIFIC TO THE HTC EVO 4G. if you try this on your phone it will most likely brick it.

please go to the Incredible 2 - All Things Root - Android Forums

at the top of the forum, there is a http://androidforums.com/incredible-2-all-things-root/520738-incredible-2-all-things-root-guide.html. in it you should find the link to unroot your phone.

good luck
