huh that is odd. sorry you are having difficulties. it has been known for the site to be wonky at times. but i have yet to encounter any issues with the site. maybe buy an android tablet and try it that way:D......just kidding:p

so no go on your laptop? maybe try it on your phone.

To start off, thanks for the guide. I've already given an official thanks, but I just have to say it.

Do you have a recommendation as to the time frame I should allow to root my phone for the first time?

If following the HTCDev method, am I correct in assuming that my warranty gets voided b/c radio is not rooted, which can alert my carrier? Is my carrier automatically alerted, or would this just be if I needed their assistance with something?

Welcome to AF!
As far as the time allotment? Depends on your comprehension of the guide, problems that may arise, etc. It can take as little as 1/2 an hour....or upwards of all night... (been there, done that..yuk!:( )
Your carrier will not know you are rooted. Nobody will know unless you tell them. And no signal gets sent anywhere saying you are rooted. Sprint does not care if you are rooted. You can always unroot if need be but not necessary. :)
Just ask us anything else if you are not clear on something ok? :)

Using HTC dev can void your manufacturer warranty, not anything to do with the carrier.

Assuming you are with sprint, they actually don't care if you root and have to help you just the same as an unrooted customer.

The only way HTC would know you unlocked it is if you physically sent them your device. Your bootloader will say **UNLOCKED** or **RE-LOCKED** if you are or have previously rooted it. Thats the only way to really tell. They'll know they sent you the unlock code, but that doesn't prove you used it.

Is it necessary to remove the internal storage card before rooting to keep my backups of data and programs safe?
welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!
no it is not necessary to remove it. you should always back it up on your pc, but the rooting process doesn't wipe the sd card so you should be fine.

and you apps on your card (if you moved them to the sd card) will no longer work. you should back them up with mybackup pro. when you move the apps to the card only part of the app get moved. the main portion will remain on the phone. so when you root it your phone will get wiped and thus the part of the app that was on the phone will be gone..........so backup accordingly.

I used the HTCdev to root yesterday as Sprint just replaced my 4G

But now I either want to unroot and return to sprint the phone -- Or
put this phone back to froyo and use my old rom.

However can't get past first step

7. in the command window type:
Code:
adb shell
ok you should get # in the command window if not then something went wrong.

something went wrong...... only a $ shows and I can't go furhter

I tried su as well

$ cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
cannot create /data/flash_image: permission denied
$

Thanks for the quick reply and great guides.

hboot 2.18.0001

ok what rom are you currently on? and it says unlocked as well, correct?

and just curious, you mentioned you want to go back to froyo?......why? you do not need to unroot to do that. you can just flash a froyo rom. and to be honest you do not have to unroot the phone to take it into sprint.

read this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/655895-complete-unrooting-guide-evo-4g.html. especially the beginning part, about sprints policy on rooted phones.

right now I put back the original Sprint nandroid. Yes Unlocked.

My froyo rom worked perfect.

The music players do not save the spot of any song (audio book ) when they are closed on this phone. I spoke to HTC and they confirmed it is a problem but wanted $80.00 to fix it. So I thought I would return a unrooted phone to Sprint so they can not claim the reason the music players ( all of them) wont save the spot b/c I rooted it.

I tried to restore my old rom but that didnt work. Maybe I need to install the froyo rom fresh and not use my backup.

Nonetheless if the froyo rom wont fix the music player- then I have to return to sprint.

According to what that doc says -- they should not give me a hard time.

ok so the reason you do not have root access is because you nandroid restored back to stock. the stock rom does not have su (superuser) cooked in. su is what gives root permission so that you can change your system partition. without su you can't do certain things until you flash the su file.

what happened when you tried to restore your old rom(nandroid)?

so do you want to unroot or try a froyo rom (or even mikg3.11) and see if that fixes things?

ok -- true -- I have to put the su back on.

what happened when you tried to restore your old rom(nandroid)?

as it was restoring I got 1.5 lines of dots-- and said it was done- seemed to be too short of a restore.
................

I rebooted and the phone hung @ the HTC 4g white screen

mik has the same music player problem. I brought the issue up there months ago and they thought i was crazy.

I just downloaded the old froyo rom. I will try to load it now and let you know what happens.

But if I can not fix the music with the old rom-- I will just put back the nandroid and go to sprint.

Or I suppose I can try the unroot method as long as I have super user on phone etc.

ok that sounds like a good plan. yeah just the stock nandroid should be fine. most sprint techs anyways will not know that it is rooted. i took my phone in one time and they had no idea that i was rooted.....so you should be fine.

wow that is a blast from the past.
Nostalgia !

Yeah I tried a bunch of roms and was happy with my setup.

It seems the kernel may shorten the battery life but I got full days out of phone when my battery was good. I just bought some after market batteries from Overstock for 2 for $10 but they dont seem as good as the original which Sprint wants $50.
