Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

I'm stuck I finished the first step but when my phone restarted it wasn't at the bootloader menu. So basically my phone is back to how it was when I bought it and I have no idea where to go from here.

Oh and I did the HTCdev method.

Hi, this is my first post to the forum.

I'm trying to root my evo (2.3.5 with hboot 2.18.0001) using the taco method and everything seemed to go swimmingly until step 16. I'm seeing two things wrong:
1) it doesn't ask me if i want to update but says
sd checking...
loading...[pc36diag.zzip]
no image!
loading...[pc36diag.nbh]
no image or wrong image!
loading...[pc36img.zip]

I thought it was no big deal as it gives me a little blue status bar on the upper right of the screen. however, when it gets done it says it is checking pc36img.zip and then says

2)Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
do you want to reboot device?
<vol up> yes
<vol down> no

I tried re-downloading and installing the pc36img.zip file but with same results... and yes, it is in the root of my sd card and named correctly.

I would be really grateful for any suggestions.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!
did everything go right on step 12 where you used the mtd-eng and flash image commands? did it match with the output that is posted at the end of step 12?

Everything looks the same. I'm going to re-attempt the whole shebang and see if I put a decimal point in the wrong place. I always mess up some mundane detail.

ok the key is that the output of the mtd-eng and the flash iamage commands in step 12 need to match exactly or you will not have changed your misc partition so that you can downgrade your hboot.

let us know how it goes.

You usually only get that error when the device is connected in Disk Drive mode instead of Charge only mode.

Either that, or the file hasn't been extracted to the root of the SD card.

The file is on the root of the SD Card. I finally got past that step but I'm still having the same issue on step 16 where nothing happens when I get back to the screen. It's the same issue the person who posted before me is having, it's not asking me to update. it says the image is missing, then that it's checking the img, but nothing happens after that. So I've tried five times, I've deleted and re-downloaded everything at least twice, I've deleted and re-added the img, flash, and mtg files to the sd card several times. I've read in this thread other people who are having this issue but there's no definitive solution.

sorry i missed your post.
what step did you get to over at the HTCdev website?

Success!!!
Started from scratch and everything worked out. No idea what I did differently. Rooted with unrevoked and now have hboot 2.10 with s-off and no water mark. Eat it sprint!
Thanks for posting this

Anyone have a quick suggestion as to the best stable rom for the evo?

edit
never mind. I flashed MikG 3.11 and aggressive freedom .9.

So far, everything is working great! Finally able to use wifi hotspot and tethering without additional apps.
Looking forward to seeing what else i can do with this thing.

Thanks for the help

I completely finished the first step and my phone turned on and everything was reset and I'm assuming the bootloader is unlocked now. I'm just lost and have no idea where to go from there.

ok step one of my guide is to unlock the bootloader. to verify power off the phone and then press and hold power+vol down. this will take you to the bootloader. at the top it should say unlocked. if it did not then something went wrong.

if you are unlocked then proceed to step#2 of my guide. you will need to get a custom recovery before you can do anything else so step#2 is very important. there are two ways to do it and the choice is up to you.

if you need help with the process please feel free to ask.

Hey everyone,
I have a question on method 3, TacoRoot, I cannot get past step six. When I bring up the stock recovery menu I get "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command" in yellow letters. I have followed the instructions to a "T" so my question is, how can I get passed this? I have downloaded all the necessary files and they are on the root of the SD card. Any help would be appreciated.

You can ignore that error and reboot the device. There isn't anything that you need to actually do in recovery - you just need to have booted into it once.

There should be a menu at the top of the screen, the first option being "Reboot device now". That's all you need to do.

Well my only concern is that when I use adb to push tacoroot.sh it says device cannot be found.

You shouldn't be doing that while in recovery - you should've rebooted the device, enabled USB Debugging in the Settings and connected in Charge Only mode - then adb would recognize your device.

Hello Cap, this is my first time posting a thread on any forum ever, I usually search through the pages and can figure out the solution through other peoples questions. After reading 13 pages and spending 7 hours working on it I need your help. Stupidly, I opted for the taco method. Everything went pretty smoothly until I put the zipped PC32IMG and bootloaded. it said the same thing that "Kobra" did. When loading PC32IMG it ends in saying "Main Version is older! Update fail!" redownloaded the PC32IMG thing like 5 times and I've tried adding .zip which didn't help at all. I've even redone all the commands and tried to start over. the only funny thing that is different from my screen than your screen shot is that after I type abd I get the # sign but after that it doesn't say any of the daemon stuff at all it just does # and lets me do the rest of the commands. I tried to give up and do the first htc method but that won't work for me either now! I am unable to fastboot in bootloader mode. I'm stuck, please help!!!

did you do step 5 in the taco root method?

and we do not have a sim card. just a sd card.

you need to unzip the mtd and flash img files. there is nothing else in the zipped file so i'm not sure what you mean by not the whole file. once they are unzipped then move them to the sd card.

I did all the steps, but must have mis-typed something because I tried it again tonight and got through it. Now rooted and running CyanogenMod! thanks! Where to start now in the root world!?! :)

hello my fellow AF members. i will try to answer your questions in a group post.

ok so the steps prior to step 10 worked? so step 8 and step 9 worked with no issue? i say that because you should be using the same path and there is no reason for that error to occur if the previous steps worked. make sure that the phone is set to charge only and that you have usb debugging turned on as well.

do you have the phone setup as charge only with usb debugging turned on?

but research took me to aprogram called revolutionary does that work?

if you have hboot 2.18 then revolutionary will not work for you. it will only work for those who have hboot 2.15 or 2.16. so you will need to check your hboot. power off the phone (make sure that fastboot is disabled, settings>apps>uncheck fastboot) then press and hold power+vol down. this will take you to the bootloader. at the top of the screen it will say what version hboot you have.

Hey ocnbrze thanks a lot for all your help. Mik g ROM is great. One last question. Which kernel works best with mikg? My battery is dying way too quickly. Idk if its cause my current kernel or my battery is bad. I downloaded team wins kernel manager app but Idk which one to download lol

any gingerbread kernel will work. the problem is that not all kernels may work for you as it is always YRMV with kernels. what works for you may not work for me so try them all and see. maybe start with the freedom kernels. there are four of them and you want to use the universal one. the others are for a specific rom. and i would start out with the more aggressive kernel and then work your way down the list. always give kernels a few days to settle in before moving on.

I downloaded it but where do I go to change the settings? Can't find it lol
