Root [Revised] Rooting Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies Guide

Can the hboot be updated back to 2.18 after rooting?

You don want h-boot 2.18. There's no reason to worry about boot versions. Just about the only reason they are updated is to close root loopholes. I'd rather have any hboot OTHER than 2.18

Hey!

I believe OCN meant PRL and profile.

I haven't been on a sense based ROM in a while but its Menu>Settings>About phone>update PRL and Profile.

Something along those lines
It's alive!! Thanks so much!

I updated the profile and the PRL. Since the PRL number did not change, my guess is that it did not update (although it always says that it updates). But the profile update must have done the trick and I now have 11 stock apps to update. The Google maps on already updated :-)

If I could trouble you experts for a bit more info - could someone explain why the update fixed the issue? Or maybe point me to a link that talks about what PRL and the profile is/does.

Edit: I've updated my original post to include the solution for future Googlers...

Prl updates only come out every so often, but profile updates kind of re-syncs you with the sprint network .

Glad it worked for you

Yea I already tried that and taco root method but I always get < waiting for device >

yes you can. here is the guide:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/526575-guide-unrooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-a.html

Well I decided to use my pc and so far Ive gotten farther then my mac... But now I've run into the problem when I type fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_Code.bin....it just hangs..
The directory is set up write its coming from c drive in the Android folder. My phone is in the fastboot USB mode and on the right side of the white screen there is a vertical rectangular box that is showing up... PLEASE HELP

how long does it hang? and where do you see the rectangular box? on your phone? and you are sure that you are in fastboot?

best way to get the right path correct is to hold shift while right clicking on the android folder. in the pop up window select enter command window here option.

Yea I already tried that and taco root method but I always get < waiting for device >

did you do step 5 where you have fastboot unchecked and usb debugging turned on? you need to make sure that that step is done in order for taco root to work.

I had that too... but it was my own fault. It turned out that my computer was no longer communicating with the phone. I later figured out that I had a mismatch in versions between the driver and the WdfCoInstaller DLL.

I later learned that when you see FASTBOOT change to FASTBOOT USB, you have a connection. I sure wish that I had noticed that earlier.

Hey gang. Got my phone all rooted, but I now can't get it to go back to using it. Every time I restart my phone, I go to the bootloader menu, re: my options are Fastboot, Bootloader, Reboot, Reboot Bootloader, and Power Down. I have been unable to actually get back into normal phone use mode. Am I missing something?

Welcome to the forums!!!

No, TACOROOT is completely separate from HTCDEV

Thank you. So the Tacoroot has its own bootloader unlocking process? Sprint needs to stop updating with the ota when u have to replace your phone. I hate having to reroot just because they think they're doing me a favor by updating.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!
sounds like you do not have a rom installed. what did you do after you rooted to get you in this state? what method did you use?

to get to recovery select bootloader and then recovery (hopefully you installed a custom recovery). and from there we can get you a rom installed. but before we do that, just want to make sure that you can get to recovery.

I used I used the Gingerbread 2.3.5 Dummies guide that is within these forums.

I just went to bootloader and then to recovery. The reboot took me back to the DOS-y screen with "Reboot system now/USB-MS toggle/Backup/Restore/etc" options.

well there are three methods with in this guide. so did you do HTCdev, captain throwback's method, or taco root?

and that is your recovery which is amon ra. if you connect your phone to the pc via usb and then select usb-ms toggle then you can gain access to your sd card so that you can download a rom.

try this rom:
MikG v3.11 [3/9/2012]

1.download the rom
2.go into recovery and select backup and make a nandroid backup
3.go back to the main menu and select wipe
4.wipe dalvik cache, then cache, and finally system
5.go back to the main menu and select usb-ms toggle and move mikg3.11 file over to the sd card. DO NOT PUT IT IN A FOLDER. just leave it on the root of the sd card.
6.select flash zip from sd card and then scroll down to the mikg 3.11 file by using the vol up or vol down and then select it with the power button.
7.first boot up will take a bit longer then normal so do not panic. the phone needs to be build up the caches and that takes some time.
8.congrats!!!!!!!!!!you have now mikg3.11

Used the HTC Dev steps.

In USB-MS mode now. Downloading ROM...

MikG ROM looks good thus far. Got the nice little ASCII splash. Now I am at "Setting permissions..." in the boot process. Previously, I had used ZZZVR_Superwipe and it didn't load correctly.

Boot looks good. I think I have it now. Mistake was fat-fingering my ROMS into a folder rather than straight onto SD.

Big thanks, ocnbrze. Nicely done. Thanks for the help.

Super wipe wipes the phone. It should be used before every rom flash but it is not a rom itself. ive seen a lot of people thinking this was a rom lately, can you tell us what lead you to think that so we can be clearer in our guides?

It was the first step in the flash process:

1.first you need the vr superwipe:http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8709935/ZZZVR_SUPERWIPE.zip. download it and put it on your card. (optional)*

It is clear now that I understand, but the fact that it was within the "flash a rom" step in the HTCdev method just sort of led me to believe that it was a ROM. I get it now, but initially I was confused. Maybe remove it from that step, or make it an optional step unto itself?

ok yeah a few people have that confused. I do have it as optional in the guide though. i will edit the guide so as not to create confusion. thanx for the tip.

i'm newly registered to the forum, i've browsed it quite a bit but decided to post my first question and say hi and thanks to everyone for their effort and knowledge.

so hi and thanks everyone!

ill spare you the long story and get right down to it, all that i want to do with my phone is to tether some wifi to my tablet pc and maybe remove some bloatware. im used to the feel of the stock ui and was curious if i could get a little advice on which would be the best method, and which rom has the most similar feel/stability.

thanks in advance for your time

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i would do the recommended HTCdev method. it is much easier to do, but i will leave the ultimate decision to you.

and the best rom to try is mikg3.11 especially if you like stock. it is waaaaaaaaay better then stock though. super fast and very stable. it has the sprint hotspot hacked and all of the bloatware removed. here is the link:MikG v3.11 [3/9/2012]

once you are rooted, i would read this guide here:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html and just go to the after rooting section and read up on flashing roms, making nandroid backups among other things.
