Root [ROM] Dirty Unicorns 5.1.1 {HAMMERHEAD} (4/26/15)

Complete noob here, the Nexus 5 I have coming in the post in the next couple of days will be my first ever android device and I think I might like to have a play with this rom. Do I have to root first? What's the process involved for installing and operating this rom? Anything else I should know as a complete and utter novice?

Flashing Roms/kernels/mods will require a custom recovery, which is gained during the process of rooting.

Flashing a ROM is the same procedure for pretty much any ROM:

Reboot to recovery
Make a nandroid : done through recovery. Makes a full backup of your phone in case you don't like the changes you make.
Wipe data/factory reset
Flash ROM
Flash gapps (open source Roms don't include the play store, so you flash gapps or Google apps to get the play store on there)
Flash any kernel you'd like (or skip, each ROM will come with a default kernel)
Flash any modifications you'd like
Reboot
 
I'm finally having that rebuilding party. I downloaded NYCHitman's Feb 20 build (from the Dirty Unicorns G+ community) and the new DU_Gapps that is now linked on the XDA thread (in the OP downloads) and I love it. The dark themed play store alone is worth it. However, it's also a multi-dpi play store, so everything is back to being compatible again. Shold work with the current official build at XDA as well, but I love Josh's builds. They are very slick and stable.

Have I mentioned that I love this ROM! ;)
 
Been tinkering with this ROM since yesterday and I love it.....only problem is, I don't see the menu anymore where I can update my PRL and such

Yesterday being Friday
 
OK............tried the rom early on and was not mentally ready for all the changes. (my bad).
I would like to try it out today. Have the time.

I have the N5. Am a bit confused about which build to download and use?

I have a nandroid backup already made, should I just flash the 1/31/2014 rom in the first post? It seems like this is a bit outdated?

Also, I am running xposed with navbar and gravity box. Will this cause an issue or do I need to go back to the stock rom first?

Sorry for all the questions. Want to make sure I do the right before instead of having issues.

Try settings>more>mobile networks
Or try the dialer code *#*#3282#*#*

See if there's an option in either of those places. I don't have sprint so I can't check it out first.

The 1/31 ROM is the last official release and is what is officially supported on the XDA thread. NYCHitman (who is, I believe, the official curator of the Nexus 5 version of Dirty Unicorns) releases test builds on the G+ community. I install those and they seem to work fine, but they are test builds and should not be discussed on the XDA thread.

I would start with the official build, see how it is for you and get help with anything that you have questions about. Then, when you are happy with that, make a Nandroid and consider test builds. Or not. Just wait for the next official release.

I'm pretty sure Xposed works fine on DU, but I don't use it myself. You might first see what DU tweaks gets you and then go from there.

You don't need to go back to stock ROM as you will be wiping everything when you first install DU (after that, you can do a dirty install, meaning you just flash the new version or test build and reflash Gapps and wipe only Dalvick and cache and all your apps and settings are preserved).

That's the latest official build. I'm currently running that one. Wipe data and then flash.

Don't worry about that. When you flash the rom you'll be starting fresh. You will have to reinstall the xposed framework and gravity box module if you want to use them. They will be gone after a fresh install of the rom.

I am using gravity box with no issues. The rom has a lot of the features built in that you get from gravity box, so if you do need it, be careful not to use conflicting settings. I only use it for one or two extra tweaks.

Dialer code is a no go, but the other one helped...there is another menu in that path called Carrier settings

usually I find that menu as "system updates" above the "About Phone" or "About System" at the very bottom of settings

Have run into one issue while setting up my handset.
I play a racing game quite a bit but it says that : "Your device isn't compatible with this version".
It is Real Racing 3.
Any ideas?

You need to change back to the stock dpi (480) or use a modded play store that supports multiple dpi.

Likely DPI related. Feel free to use the MultiDPI gapps, which should fix your issue(s).

OK...........is there a place in the rom that can do this or do I have to use an app from the Play Store (if I do, can you suggest one?)

It says I now have 420 dpi.

You can manually Edit the build prop in /system with root Explorer or similar file Explorer.

Change this line: ro.sf.lcd_density=420
To 480


Or if you'd like to keep using the 420 dpi use multi dpi gapps which I'm looking for a link to.

Unfortunately, I don't think the 1/31 build had the settings option to change dpi. You have to edit the value in /system/build.prop and reboot. The test builds have a DPI setting in Dirty Tweaks.

I know the DU_TBO Gapps package for download in the XDA OP has a multi-dpi Play Store. I'm using it now. I would think the PA package would too, but don't know.

EDIT: I got all kindsa ninja-ed :D
 
Hmmmmm.....

I edited the build prop file and set that line to 480. Sadly it did nothing.

I added the file in the link that was provided and flashed it. It refused to flash, sad there was an error. I used this link: White Multi DPI Play Store v4.5.10 for KK.
BTW.....when I check it now does say my density is 480.

BTW.................even though when running certain root apps and SU asking for permission, I do not have the SU app listed when I look in my apps folder. However, when I go to settings, apps, it does only show up under all but not under running or downloaded.

Not sure what to do?

Even thought the file did not flash, I went into the Play Store App and Google Services Framework and cleared the data. "clear data of Play Store and Google Services Framework." That is all i did.

I then went into my apps in the play store and it installed Real Racing. Evidently making the change to the prop build did work but needed me to clear the data in these two apps.

It seems to work now :)

Glad it worked, whether because of the switch to 480 or the multi-dpi play store really did flash. I recently did a clean flash of DU with the DU_TBO_Gapps_02-15.zip that is listed in the OP of the XDA Nexus 5 Dirty Unicorns thread, along with the Dirty Unicorns link. It has a multi-dpi Play store integrated with the other Gapps. The Play store is inverted, which I prefer, and it works great. No problems with any apps on 420 dpi.

On the SU thing, SU is baked into the ROM now. You don't need the app. You should fine SuperSU in the settings (I don't think that happened on a test build, but I confess I have been on test builds so long I sometimes get mixed up). :rolleyes:
