Root [ROM][WIP] CyanogenMod 7 | Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread) | Current Version: 09122011

Yes all the credit and tips goes to isaac for taking out countless times he have spent on building us a better rom making our phone worth having, and as PlayfulGod stated he/we all will try to maintain the cm7 as it is official to me and others, and we all will support everyone with problem solving/issues, and i want to give thanks to pip, skull, and other devs that took out there own time to give us something great.:D

Did you guys stop to think that he didnt quit or give up on cm7, just that he has other things to do?
He said himself that he has another phone and that he doesnt work much on the ascend anymore, He just does it in his spare time. So Id just say give it some time and maybe he'll actually come back. I mean... He didnt say himself that he was finished with cm7 or anything did he?

If someone knows a way to change the mac address on cm7 05212011 build please say something. It is frustrating that every ascend with cm7 has the same mac address and confuses the wifi routers and only one of the cm7s gets the wifi. Other than this one issue I love cm7 on my ascend.

the cm7 will have to be edited...hopefully it will be soon.

I was speaking with isaac as I made my post ;) and no he hasnt said hes done with CM7, but he doesnt know how long it will be b4 he picks it back up, if at all. And then told me it was up to me now lol. So as I posted, I will try to maintain CM7 until he does pick it back up, but I'm not a dev by no means, so lol.

what other roms are there for the ascend?
I know of cm6, cm7, the icarus mod, and thats it...
Whats the differences and whats better?

cm6 is right behind cm7, both are oc to 710, but cm7 has more customizations than cm6, thats really about it, and icarus is also a great rom based off of 2.1 eclair, but it was tweak and modified performance wize, and it is clock at 600mhz, so if i had to choose 2 out of the 3, it would definitely be cm6 and cm7...

Those are the only ones fit to install. Icarus is 2.1 (modded stock), CM6 is 2.2 built from AOSP source, and CM7 is 2.3.4 built from AOSP source. Its basically what you the user prefers, Android tends to get faster and smoother the newer the platform. Along with more features.

ok, so far CM7 is awesome, but the home menu bar is annoying, you know the bottom bar that is on every desktop screen, is there a way of changing those icons? I know Icarus, it was very easy to change them. heck you could even flick it over and add more. But for the buttons on there right now doesn't work for me.

Try a different launcher like Launcher Pro/Plus, ADW, or Go Launcher.

No, I'm not gone. Not completely at least, but I was getting close to it.

(The next part is an explanation/rant of my situation. I'm not speaking directly about anyone and I'm not trying to incite any hurt feelings. Just putting my thoughts down. I also am not looking for praise or any of that crap. I'm just one part of the community and the community deserves to know where I stand.)

In the last couple of months, it's become very hard to justify working on this phone. There's numerous reasons (for me) as to why:

1) School - I'm a full-time college student.
2) The phone itself - Besides the fact that I don't use the phone, the hardware itself doesn't seem very capable.
3) Lack of knowledge - I'm not a developer. Never have been, never will be. I only know how to code in Python (only the OTA packaging tools are written in Python).
4) Relationship with the community - This is the biggest thing for me and I'll explain this more fully.

I got fed up with the Ascend community. I went ahead and shut down my Twitter because it became another option for people to bitch at me. The bug tracker was taken down because I never once received a real bug report. I never once got an ADB logcat output so I can see the true error, research the error and potentially come up with a fix. Furthermore, people were so arrogant/greedy that they didn't even take the time to read the other reports before filing their own. This led to numerous duplicates of useless reports. I asked Pip to end my involvement in the bug tracker, but I guess he was fed up too, so he closed it down completely.

While I don't consider myself a developer, I understand that problems do arise. People are expecting someone to produce the fix. (This is why open-source sucks sometimes). This is the nature of software development. The one thing I noticed about the Ascend community is there aren't any real developers. The work that I did was a culmination of 7 months of research. I didn't do anything differently than what any other Ascend user could of done. I researched other projects, tinkered, figure out what did what and put it together. This is what frustrated me. Everything boiled down to a one-man mission with everyone looking for a miracle fix. When all I did was Google. There's a wealth of information out there and tools to find it. Use them.

Working on CM7-Ascend became a tedious job, instead of being the cool hobby it used to be. It literally became the old "give people an inch, they take a mile" scenario. Not the whole community, however. There were users who were like, "holy s*@!, man thanks for the effort." People, like me, who couldn't believe Gingerbread 2.3 was on the Ascend! But mostly, it was just users who were complaining about useless things. This all plays into how young this community is. I don't mean this age-wise. For most Ascend users, this is their first Android. They've never participated in an open-source project and it's still amazing to them that all this can be free. But while it might be free to you, it is never free to the developer. And pride plays a big part too. You invest time into a project and it stings when people insult it. Even when you know they can't really do any better. I really should of known better as this ain't my first rodeo, but it's definitely made me think about the open-source philosophy. (Which most people still don't understand, even most Linux users).

On a positive note, the cool people were really cool. I mean that. The coolest of the cool. Especially those who fill the gaps that I couldn't here on the forums. Also, my sources are still up. If I were so inclined, I could easily pull my sources, merge upstream crap and keep going. (I'd have to reinstall Ubuntu as I wiped my dev laptop already). Oh and those wanting to get the Ascend officially supported, I wouldn't. You have to go through a review process to make changes to the official version. Sometimes it's just better to fly off the radar. I probably just need a break to recharge and I'll settle back into CM7-Ascend. If this was tl;dr crap I'm sorry.

Happy Ascending.

This honestly made me sad. Some one who tries to give people something to enjoy, especially free at that, just crap on him. no offense.
This was probably the best thing Ive ever done to my phone, and at that it was free, so Im not complaining. Honestly If I had money, Id donate a pretty penny to help out in researching and updating and helping out isaac and everyone else working on the phone just because I would love to see where it could go, and to help them out. I think that would be great.
Im sorry for all the people who are how they are, but please dont give up on us. Im a first time android user and Ive learned so much from being on this web sight and reading alot of what everyone here writes.
Hopefully you keep us updated though!
And take it easy

I for one appreciate the time you put into this, Cm7 would have not gotten this far without you and the help of others that put their time into this. Thank you for everything isaac!

Issac,
So many things you stated are very true. I'm an old fart who likes to play with gadgets and computers. Ask any one who knows me and they will tell you I am not a coder, never wanted to be. Don't have the patience or focus. On that note, the fact that you are self taught speaks more to your abilities and why we should take the time to understand open source and it's ramifications and benefits.
I submitted a bug report one time. By not understanding the os or where to get actual error data I was not able to properly give you a report you could work with. It's not like windows where I can go to the event logs and give you an error code, or a stop code. I understand that makes it that much harder. Kinda like a mechanic diagnosing an engine from just a verbal discription, impossible at worst, difficult at best.
I hope you and playfulgod will continue to work on the little bugs us users find and show what real initiative is to the rest of the community.
Focus on your college education, doing dev work should come second.
Look forward to the next update whenever it is published.

Thanks for all the stuff you did, you're quite the bro.

Just want to throw this in for good measure.I recently had a bootloop problem that could be resolved by having someone call me.I was stuck on the SKATEBOARD DROID on a recent build & thought it was just a faulty download.

Same thing happened yesterday immediately after restoring my add-on launcher from TIBU,while simultaneously FREEZING the stock launcher.SO,I unfroze the stock launcher, totally DELETED the aftermarket launcher & problem solved.

SO,I narrowed the cause of the bootloop to two OR three possibilities:

1) FREEZING OF THE STOCK LAUNCHER w/TITANIUM BACK-UP,or.........

2) SOMETHING IN MY BACKED UP SETTINGS OF MY LAUNCHER,or.......

3) A CONFLICT IN HAVING MORE THAN ONE LAUNCHER.

Not sure if this will be of any help for your situation, but, one thing is for sure.Clear out as much old data as possible using CWM by formatting & wiping as much as possible to avoid these snags while installing a new ROM,only after backing up your data first, preferably off the SDcard & to another source to be restored @ a later date if necessary.

EDIT/UPDATE:

Problem solved.I froze the stock launcher & downloaded another new launcher not previously installed.Re-booted phone & got stuck in a bootloop on the Skateboard Droid animation.Again had someone call my phone to knock the phone out of the bootloop.

DO NOT FREEZE the STOCK LAUNCHER on CM7.If you choose to FREEZE the stock launcher,UN-FREEZE it before re-booting/powering down the phone to avoid getting stuck in a bootloop on your the subsequent boot-up.

well, a few things i'd like to address here. First, if any bounty is offered it should goto isaac for obvious reasons. Second, i will try to 'maintain' cm7 until isaac feels like picking it back up, if he ever does.

Even if isaac chooses never to start back on cm7, he still deserves mad propsand appreciation for what he has done with cm6/7 both. If any of you pay attention to the phones out, not many of the highend phones even have 2.3.3 on em, and none have 2.3.4 yet. So even tho the lil ascend isnt a power house of a phone, with cm6/7 is ahead of most phones out, software wise anyhow.

well said...
