Where do you want the root stuff ?

Oh, I thought we were going with a sticky.

If the staff wants to try to keep things separated into a root only subforum that is fine with me.

My personal preference would be a sticky. However if we did that, I think we'd need to take a look at whether the stickies currently in that subforum are needed/relevant as there are probably too many at the moment.

I'm sure alostpacket has brought up reorganising that section before, but it didn't go anywhere, it's probably worth revisiting that idea.

You know me, I'm a sub-forum freak (as opposed to prefixes, stickies and automatic transmissions).

:p

it wouldnt be a bad idea, but at the same time, how much clutter would it be?

prefixes would be great kelmar
[game][app][root] i dont think would work
[root app] would

it would be alot better if that were the case, but however rooted apps tend to fall behind alot and you dont hear from them alot, so a subforum for them would be beneficial in a way

Seems like a cool idea.

(kinda off-topic re:prefixes)
I'm not a big fan of prefixes from an informational design/user experience standpoint, but tags are cool. (the thing I dont like about prefixes is that they are tags, just a different "kind", seems like a confusing concept to someone not using them frequently). Tags in general are useful though.

If tags need to be more used/made prominent that could be something to think about maybe? Prefixes seem like a band-aid to the fact that people aren't using tags correctly/often.

I wonder if there would be some auto-tag vbulliten plugin to help more people towards tagging their threads more easily. Say it could scan the text of the post and suggest 5 tags or w/e. It would be hard to code from scratch but I wonder if vB has some ready-made solution... Perhaps integrated into prefixes so that the most important tag (chosen by the user?) becomes the prefix.

But I like the general idea of a root sticky or root subforum, or whatever. That could be pretty cool.

How about an All things root lounge or forum for non device specific root threads/questions which can include a root apps section or it can encompass root apps?

If not, I'm all for a root apps section by itself.

I'm not sure a lot of people search for applications that need root access, or at least I don't understand why they'd do that.

Plus, it'd be a huge chore to find and move all the correct threads to that section, which I'm not sure is worth the effort considering the fact that I don't see any real benefit for that section in the first place.

Just my opinion. :)

That's my thinking. I tend to root my devices so that I can do things with them that can't be done with unrooted devices (Titanium Backup, for instance). But I can't say that I've ever gone LOOKING for an app that requires root. I look for an app that performs a specific function(s), if it happens to require root - so be it.

I do, just to find out what else is possible with root access. but it also helps identify if functionality you want is restricted to root.

I've been reading and following this thread of a little bit...trying to make up my mind about how I feel about it... I'm a little torn (I think ;)).

I like the idea of a root forum, not just a root apps forum. I say this because I'm a root junkie, LOL. I'm thinking that this would be a great place to keep a list of root-related apps and concepts. There are always folks in every forum that are constantly asking about what root is, what it can do for you, why root, etc. This would be a great central place to point folks to when these questions arise.

I'm sure this could also be accomplished with a stickied thread, but having a forum would give folks a more diverse platform to interact and have discussions in.

+1 re. this.

I also agree with Hoto about not specifically looking for apps that require root, but listing apps that require root, or optionally implement root (like one of my apps) for certain features, or are useful for root folks (like the other of my apps, LOL) would be very helpful to folks.

Cheers!

Teacher - can I change my answer? :)

I was lying awake at 2am this morning thinking about this (don't ask) and wondered why we'd need this, how many root only apps can there be anyway?
And then, having asked myself THAT question I realized there was no easy way to find an answer to the question.
Therefore, I'm good with a root apps forum.

+1 / ^^^ excellent post! ;) :)

As you know, Hoto, my AFV app does not require root permissions, but everybody who flashes ROMs or other update.zip type of files should be using it or a similar tool for their MD5 checksum verification. Its not always obvious that this, or other apps, would be root-related and therefore known by folks who could benefit from it.

A poll should clear things up :D
