[ROOT GUIDE] Boost Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2

The only restriction is if you find one that is a "no data" (one that does not format the data partition) You shouldn't use that one as it causes problems if downgrading back to stock.

Hi im new to all this. I have a boost Baseband FL24. At the bottom of op's post in the edit it says to go to the site to get the corresponding kernel so I go but I get lost. Im here:

Root > Files > Devices > Samsung Galaxy S2 (Boost) (SPH-D710BST) > Kernels > Recovery Kernels > Agat63 Recovery > Stock Repacks....

If this is correct which do I choose? One-Click, Tar or Zip?

The only reason I want to root my phone is so I can use the PS3 controller to play games haha but im kinda lost.

Thanks in Advance.

Thanks. I tried it and first it froze on setup connection and the second time it froze at zImage. Im scared to try again I dont want my phone to die :(

Where did you put the file in Odin. did you check to make sure you didn't have a corrupt download. Also, did you install kies?

I put the file in PDA. It shouldn't be corrupt I can open the compressed file. Kies is installed but I could never get it to connect to my phone properly the tutorial for kies shows how to connect if your pc has wireless connection to the router but my pc is connected with an Ethernet cable. That shouldn't matter I wouldnt think?

you could just flash an entire stock ROM that is already rooted. Then have a one click installer for that. You could upgrade to Boost's release of Jelly Bean at the same time.

I haven't had any negatives in going to Jelly Bean. It makes my phone run so much nicer.

Here is the link to the OP:
[ROM][ODIN][TAR]SPH-D710BST GC01 (GC01 Modem/Kernel/ROM - Root/Stock)

Now if you are using a windows PC (which you should be to enjoy the ease of the One Click) then you need to ignore these two sections in the Op's instructions.

Mac/Linux - Install 7-zip, then use it to unpack the individual ODIN components in Reference Section B (below). If Heimdall fails flashing all 3 files together, try doing them individually. Skip the remaining instructions that are windows specific (steps 3, 4, 6).

Android - Install ZArchiver, then use it to unpack the ODIN OneClick 7zip self-extractor file in this section (long press *-oc-sfx.exe, Open as archive, Odin-OC, select *-OneClick.exe, Extract). Use Mobile ODIN to Open File the resulting *-OneClick.exe file. Mobile ODIN issue - modem might not flash consistently. Skip the remaining instructions that are windows ODIN specific (steps 3, 4, 5, 6).

Those two are for someone that is not using Windows..

Please note that the link in the OP to the repository where the file is, was down when I tried it a moment ago. If it doesn't open the site, try again a little later.

It doesnt say do I put that tar file in pda for this jelly bean update? Do I have auto reboot and reset time checked? Or am I suppose to get the .exe?

Sorry im just very new to this and dont want to mess up.

Edit: Never mind.. I downloaded the exe and it does it by itself haha. Ill let you know if it works.

I found the problem. The USB 3.0 wasnt working correctly with my phone. I switched it to a 2.0 port and it installed smoothly. Thanks for your help man.

Thanks, finally got it working and yes it was simple. Do you I have to use the yellow triangle fix to reset the count or does it not matter?

What do you recommend for backing up my apps and game data in case I have to do a factory reset.

Well I used Triangle away because I don't like seeing it, but it doesn't affect your use of the phone. Only if you need to send your phone in for warranty repair then yes triangle away and then return the phone back to stock before sending it in for the repair.

For backing up apps I use Titanium Backup. I consider this app a must have and well worth the price for the pro version. It is so very useful.

I don't mind the triangle being it doesn't bother the phone, but will use the fix if I decide to sell the phone in the future if I upgrade to a different one.

Is using the Titanium backup a different kind of backup then the recovery backup done in recovery mode?

TB backs up the apps not the ROM, and with it you can even use it to go back to a previous version of an app if you find the update is not as good (I always backup the app before updating one via the Google Play store. With it, you can easily back up and restore on an app by apps basis.

I have the free version of TB, still learnig how to restore after I do a backup of my apps and game data. I did a factory reset then rooted then tried to do a TB restore and had no luck so far.

Can someone help me im stuck in bootloop???? i can still boot in to recovery and download mode also receve calls but can't answer them. How do i fix this??? I don't have a coustom rom. Im still stock. when my phone died and i let it charge but when i turned it back on all it shows is the boost logo. Thanks in Advance.

Stock what? Are you on the stock kernel also? For someone to be of help we need to know. Stock ROM can be a few different things ICS or JB, and are you on the stock kernel of one packaged with a custom recovery? What is the build number? Without any information, I would just tell you to put the phone in download mode, connect to PC and reinstall the stock ROM.
