[ROOT GUIDE] Boost Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2

Rooting your phone with this method gives you the agat kernel/recovery, and does not change your ROM or the bloatware on it.

Thank you. Im going to root it tomorrow. Was asking a couple last questions. Will i loose everything should i do a hard reset before rooting?

You won't loose anything. The phone will work just like normal. Once Rooted, you can use apps like Titanium Backup and remove useless bloatware.

Edit: I can confirm that this process also works for FI22 and FL24. It should also work for any TW build, though you may want to grab the corresponding kernel here (i.e., if you're running a JB stock rom, make sure you get a JB kernel). I would also mention that, if you have 4g service, most custom kernels will bork your 4g speeds. You're only going to get 4g speeds with stock kernels or AGATs repacks (which are on the linked page). The repacks are just stock kernels with custom recovery that will leave your 4g speeds alone. So if you want fast 4g speeds, get a repacked kernel. If you don't have 4g or don't care about speed on it, you can get any compatible kernel you want.

But, as noted above, if something screws up or isn't working right, just flash back to stock and try again.

Hi guys, just want to first say great guide n reading thru all the post learned a lot. With that said im a total noob when it comes to samsung devices. Ive had rooted many times before with moto n htc devices. With this guide things look pretty much straight forward n i feel pretty confident. I noticed this little piece here at the end where it says that i mighg expreince some slower 4g speeds unless i use a repacked stock kernal. My question is do o have to use agats kernal tar file in the begining of the op then flash a repacked kernal or can i suplement that file with this 1 that i found using the link above

That kernel is a bit older. You can also use this kernel which is FL24 with recovery

[KERNEL][SOURCE][ICS]Boost FL24 + Agat's tREC_v0.2.2

and then continue with the guide instructions and flash superuser.

Great! Thanks... And this kernal wont mess with my data speeds correct?

Will be rooting tonight and will post my results when complete

It shouldn't mess with it. Remember though, data speeds will vary depending on location, weather, and how busy the tower is at the time.

Naturally, I was just worried bout the kernals slowing it down. I came from the boost mobile evo design and as much as I had loved the kernal from 2fast it also lowered the voltage going to the wimax so in turn signal strength dropped.
cant waitto get the rooting on this baby. i just picked it up on thursday and ive been trying to hold out for a change... so this is the longest ive gone with out rooting a device... im proud of myself :D

Ok I had some down time at work and was able to take a look at the link you had sent me... It talks about emmc bug and it removed MMC_CAP_ERASE to try and avoid the bug. Should I be worried while trying to root.

Thats good to hear. also the 0.6.8 i was told to save on my sd card for latter use. is that what i use when i want to go back to stock and how do i use it so ill know?

P.S. i have astro file manager. will that work insted of usuing titanium backup?

You will still be on a stock ROM. Flashing the kernel doesn't change that. You can also use the app framaroot (i believe that is the name) and that can root your phone for you.

well i noticed the post bout the o.6.8 tar might mess with the 4g speed thats why i had asked bout the fl24 rec tar, if i could use it insted of the o.6.8 tar. I wan't to install a custom rom after i root. also SelfElevated2 had told me to save the o.6.8 zip to my SD card for later use figured that was to go back to stock if i got tired of root or needed to for a replacment phone. and was wondering how to use it if need be to go back to stock.

The 0.6.8zip is so when ur on another rom whatever u can flash it in any recovery then reboot recovery then restore the backup u made with stock.

If u havent made a backup yet please do so now. Boot into recovery and hit backup.when finished just reboot your phone

OK. Thanks. I'll try that.

You don't extract the .tar file. Just put that .tar file into the pda slot on odin to flash the AGAT 0.6.8 kernel.

Thanks. That worked. My phone now says:

Baseline Version: S:D710.10S.FL24
Kernel Version: 3.0.42+ AGAT_FI27_Kernal #v0.6.8
Build Number: IMM76I.FL24

Does this look right to you?

Also,

I am having issues with Wi-Fi tethering/Hotspot. I have tried PDANET+ (Foxfi), Barnacle and WiFi Tehtering (yellow Wifi Symbol) and none of them work.

PDANET says its connected and I can see the network on my computer but when I try to connect it tells me I cannot connect to this network.

When using Barnacle and Wifi Tehtering I get an error message about Ad-hoc mode not set

Make a back up Before i root my device? And how would i flash the zip and restore the back up?

No not before u root. After ur rooted make a backup in recovery. And leave the zip just sitting in your sd. You'll understand when u see what agat recovery looks like

K. So can i use the fl24 repac tar i was talking about in place of the 0.6.8 tar to keep from messing with my 4g speed? And does both 0.6.8 and the fl24 repac tar give stock rom with recovery?
