Root Root Optimus V without computer

@Andy and Papa

I'm glad I was able to help you, and grateful to see you returning the favor by helping others out! That's what these forums are all about, helping, you just have to get past the bickering that occaisionally pops up from frustrated people. It is frustrating when you have so many new concepts and no single clear and concise reference for doing things.

Keep on helping out, it's what makes this community great!

Sorry I'm so late getting back to you, I had a couple of employees call in sick, so I worked 14 hours today, and another long one to look forward too tomorrow. ;)

Looks like you have the files in the right places, the only thing I'm not certain about is if you have the proper permissions set on busybox and flash_image, but they should have been given proper permissions by gingerbreak.

Anyway, let's give it another try:

su(return)
flash_image_recovery_/sdcard/xionia_reocver.img(return)

If that all works ok, then you can type in:

reboot_recovery

Let me know how that goes, then we will move on to flashing Harmonia

Wow, I really appreciate you coming here to help me after those long hours! About busybox.... I didn't know if it came with Gingerbreak or not, so I installed it from the market.. Am I supposed to be able to *do* anything with it, or does it just do its thing behind the scenes? When I open the busybox thing I got from the market, it just takes me to the installer.

I will definitely try what you suggested tomorrow some time, I'm turning in early tonight as I must get up early for work tomorrow, then off to the community garden :)

Oh, and do you know about what Andy was talking about a few posts back, with the xionia whatever.zip, versus xionia whatever.img? (sorry, to tired to look for/type out the file names) should I have had a zip for xionia at some point?

Thanks again, and enjoy work tomorrow, I know I will! ;) lol

I think he was refering to the xionia kernel, which is something different, things can get confusing when trying to figure out what is affecting someone else's phone.

Xionia recovery is an .img file, though you download it as a .zip file, then unzip it and put it on the root of your sdcard, which you have done.

Busybox is a collection of system tools that allow you to do things with root permissions. The flash_image file is a tool for flashing lots of things like custom recoveries, boot images, bootanimations, and more.

Both busybox and flash_image must have the proper permissions set in order to execute commands properly. If you get permission denied messages, it's usually because one of these doesn't have the correct permission settings.

BTW-did gingerbreak install SuperUser by ChainsXD? Look for it in your app drawer, if you don't have it, install it.

I installed superuser immediately after rooting.
The link you posted a while back, for xionia was a link to download an img file. I did not dl a zip file and unzip it (for xionia recovery-i did unzip a zip for flash_image) dunno if that makes any difference.

The img file is what you want, I didn't remember if I posted a link to a zip of it or the actual img file. You should have what you need, if you have any trouble, it's most likely a permissions issue, which we can fix. ;)

Hey JerryScript, I got time for this post then its lights out. The How to text with the code for installing the xionia recovery is in the zipped xionia recovery file. There's some code about mid way in there I haven't seen used or described before.(granted I'm just a "Nuub" and haven't seen much)In the last month and a half I've seen a whole lot of stuff pretaining to the "V". This just struck me as a little different. Can't hurt to look, and I know If there's anything in there that's useful your the one who'll know(don't want to be sending you on any wild goose chase but if nothing else works????)Good night all P.S. To sadielynn yes my friend is just fine. And check out Super Manager in the market.

Jerry, correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like the flash_image is corrupt. Look at the file size. The one sadielynn has is showing 0kb, the one I have is 13.64kb. Do you think this might be the cause of all the problems?

Great eyes! I was so tired last nite, I didn't see that, thankyou!

@sadielynn: Redownload the flash_image file from the link I posted earlier. Next download ES file explorer and go into its settings and at the bottom choose Root Options, then maker sure both checkboxes are checked for Root Explorer and Mount File System.

Next you need to copy and paste the flash_image file you have downloaded from the /sdcard to /system/bin
You copy by long pressing the item, and choosing copy. Then go to the directory you want and press the icon at the bottom of the screen that pulls up the clipboard, and press the copied file to paste it in the directory.

Exit ES file explorer, then use the Terminal Emulator to first set the permissions on flash_image:

chmod_755_/system/bin/flash_image

Next, flash the recovery:

flash_image_recovery_/sdcard/xionia_recover.img

If you get no errors, reboot into recovery:

reboot_recovery

Then follow the steps to backup and wipe cache and finally install Harmonia.

Your welcome. Just trying to help, looks like sadielynn has been fighting with this for a while. I hope this does the trick for her.

OK, only the flash_image file in system/bin is 0kb. The one I downloaded and is sitting in my sdcard is 9 something kb, but nevermind, I have to dl it again anyways, I just tried copy pasting it to system/bin, chose to overwrite the (0kb) one that was there, but 'copy failed' over and over. I DO Not like this ES File Explorer, btw. This is the 4th file explorer application i've had in the last 3 days, and probably the 7th one total. Is that all I was trying to do with that one line of code? Put the flash_image in the system/bin folder? Cuz it would have been *alot* faster to cut/paste from the beginning (not complaining, just sayin') anyways, I'll try all that in a couple hours, I'm off work soon, then gardening. Thanks again y'all!
:)

GOT XIONIA TO WORK!!! yay!
That's the good news.
However, flashing Harmonia didn't go as well, unfortunately. Got 2 errors, one either after i cleared cache (-wipe cache partition was the option it was under) or first thing when I wiped dalvik cache (-advanced > -wipe dalvik cache) I didn't notice when it came up exactly. Screen said :
cache wipe complete
E: cannot mount /dev/block/mmcblk0
p2
(no such file or directory)
Dalvik cache wiped

Since it said both were wiped, I went on (install zip from sdcard, chose Harmonia zip file) got this:
E: cannot open /sdcard/Harmonia. 1.3.zip
(unknown error:0)
Installation aborted

So, I backed out, rebooted and here I am.

Thank you all for getting me this far!

*edit: yes, I did remember to make a backup-first thing I did, lol, in case anyone wondered :)

*edit edit: I notice the file name for Harmonia has a space in it (Harmonia 1.3.zip). I don't think any other file has a space...could this be a problem?
Also, caches are all in need to wipe, right? Not user data or whatever else there are options for? And oddly, wiping that stuff apparently took some (but not all) of my apps out of their folders in my app drawer, and made some(but not all) of my custom homescreen icons turn into the white square w/android dood icon. Curious. I would expect all, or none, but not this mixed bag. *shrugs*

Edit x3 (sorry) OMFG i only have 246mb left on my sdcard!?? I had ~600 to 700 before. OK, ok, I *might* have gone into the mounts & storage options in xionia to look around, but when I got the part about uhh..switch (?) I didn't know what it meant so I backed out.....did I F it up? Or is the backup image made taking up all that space?

Great, you're over the hard part.

Seems as if you've had some issues with downloads. This is not an uncommon problem. Try redownloading Harmonia from here. I'm not saying it is a problem with the download, but after the issue with flash_image, it can't hurt to redownload it.

I don't use xionia recovery, but there should be an option to toggle signature verification. Try clicking on it, then try to install from sdcard again.

Usually, error 0 is associated with bad files. It can be due to a corrupt download, imrpoper signing, or a bad update binary file. Let me know what happens when you try again with fresh download of Harmonia.

Thank you! And, um, see my above edit...I think I goofed something up... Oops..

*edit: OK, no, I didn't. I just took a better look at my sdcard contents... Clockworkmod folder containing backup is well over 500mb!! I don't have room to keep that! Can I dropbox it and just put it back when I need it? Or when I get a bigger card?

Did you finally get loaded? I've been watching this thread and trying to help when I can. I hope we can help you get set up way you want. Harmonia is an excellent rom, I'm running it myself. Anything I can help with just let me know. If I don't know the answer, at least I can point you in the right direction. Feel free to pm me if you need. We are all here to help when we can.
ps. don't forget to wipe data/factory reset from the recovery. This will delete apps, but will also clear any data stored from your previous rom to help prevent any problems between the new one and the old one. This is not important when upgrading, but can crucial when changing between different roms.

There shouldn't be a space in any filename, so rename it to something simple for you like harmonia.zip.

You can dropbox the backup, but you will have no way of getting it back to your phone unless the phone is fully functioning, so for now keep it on there and clean out extra copies of the various files you have downloaded.

If you are having problems after you successfully flash Harmonia, problems like apps force closing, the market not working, etc, then you would go into recovery and format system, data, cache, and boot. But that is normally a last ditch effort.

If you backed up with Titanium Backup, it has made copies of all your apps, so that takes up a lot of space as well. When you restore the apps using Titanium Backup, do not restore the system apps or system data, that will have been replaced with the appropriate system files for Harmonia.

Got xionia working, gonna try Harmonia in a few minutes. :)
Thanks for your help and support! I *do* have some questions about Harmonia in general, since you are using it, I bet you could help me! (of course half the questions just flew outta my brain, lol)
1. When you move apps 2 sd, does aaaall the data move natively, or do I have to use link 2 sd to do that? I think I read somewhere it automatically moved everything...

2. I read the TWS bug was fixed, no more need to toggle airplane mode-true?

3. Hmmm... I know I have more questions, but I just can't think right now, lol.

Thanks again!

*edit- thank you for that info! I was wondering about that! I made a titanium backup of apps & system data so I could bring back apps. I'm just worried it I wiped it, try Harmonia again and it doesn't work again, will I be OK coming back to stock with wiped data?

Aw crap. Once I get Harmonia up and running, you think it'll be safe to not have it? Just move it back when / if I try anything else risky later?

Once you get it installed make a backup. I always rename it to the name of the rom. This way if you have any problems, you can always do a restore. As for app space,i have 59 apps installed and still have about 60megs free. You should get about 170-179megs or so for apps. If you feel you need more space you'll have to use link 2sd. I don't use it myself, so I don't know if I can help with that. The twos bug should be fixed in this build, if you have problems with it let me know. I can give you a link to an app will fix it.

Yeah, I have around 70 apps and 37mb free now, with stock. My backup i made in xionia for stock (so I can flash back if need be) is over 500mb on my sdcard, so I don't know if I'll even have room for another back up. Do you have any experience partitioning the sdcard in xionia recovery? I know I need a partition to use links2sd (when/if I get more sd space)

Mmkay, don't laugh at me, but, to get back into xionia recovery, i..turn the phone off, then hold power+ volume down+ home until the LG logo pops up or use terminal emulator and type reboot recovery? Or either one?

Either one will work. If you only have 500 megs left, you might want to look into getting a bigger card. Once you flash Harmonia, it should give you another 40 megs or so. That should still give you 70+ megs. Plenty to work with, make sure you instal a cache cleaner. I use 1 tap cache cleaner from the market. Some of the browser apps along with the market will eat up your cache memory if your not careful.

Oh don't I know it! I've and a (sometimes 2) cache cleaner(s) since day one. I plan on getting a bigger card soon, but 1. I'm so broke it isn't even funny (even $15-$20 is more than I can spend) and 2. No computer to transfer files from current sd to a new one. But my 'master plan' (muh hah hah!) includes a new sdcard. (sorry, my brain inserts an evil laugh everytime I hear 'master plan') :)

Kay you guys, now I'm confused-back at the beginning of this thread (waaay back there), JerryScript said Harmonia could move everything (apps+their data to sd, not his words, but the gist) but the word from mkbkr1 is that I would need to use links2sd to get make that happen. Sooo...who's right? Or, more likely, who am I misunderstanding?

Just looked st the Harmonia thread. Doesn't look like Leslieann included links2sd her rom. However, like I said, with the extra 40 megs of app space you might not need it right away. You can still use the native app to sd in 2.2. It will still leave a little bit on your phone, but from what you have said you should still have plenty of memory left.

I use aospCM7 with apps2sd, I just don't trust the link2sd and other methods. I have 119 apps and 70 system apps. I move everything but widgets, bootloaders, and phone apps to the sdcard using apps2sd. I have 101mb free space left on internal storage. On my sdcard, a 4gig, I have several backups from clockworkmod, TitaniumBackup backups, extra flashable files I use from time to time, music, videos, photos, and some personal files I sync with dropbox. My sdcard has 370mb free right now, and if I delete some old backups I no longer need, I can get it to over 1gig free.

apps2sd moves the app, but has to leave some info files on the internal memory in order to access everything.
